custom with a cause Better Life Bags
Hello, I’m Rebecca Founder and CEO of Better Life Bags
Steward of what God has done In 2009, while pregnant with my first son,
my friend helped me create this diaper bag. I took a picture of the bag and uploaded it to my personal facebook profile. The comments
that rolled in were really crazy and completely shocking!
My Etsy shop opened on August 23, 2009, and within one month I had 19 orders.
We felt God calling us to take a big scary leap into his mission, so we moved to Hamtramck, Michigan. We brought the business with us,
hopeful that we would be able to use it to help the community
April of 2010 I created a wholesale account with a fabric supplier and
ordered my first batch of fabric. FORTY SIX bolts of fabric arrived at my house
Since Better Life Bags started, I had been giving a percentage of the profits to low income entrepreneurs
in developing countries through Keva.org. Within the first couple of years, we were able to give to micro loans to lots of people in lots of countries, $4,800 to
180 people in 41 countries to be exact.
This is the story of how God grew my creative hobby into a giveback business that is changing lives.
In August of 2012, I took a leap by asking my friend, Nadia, to help me keep up with orders.
She was a natural! After a few months of work, Nadia was able to buy their first dinning room
table and bunkbeds for her kids. Her life had been transformed!
I suddenly wondered how many other women lived in my neighborhood, needed an extra income in their fami-
lies, yet were unable to work because their culture prevented them from getting a job outside their home. Better Life Bags became dedicated to
providing women in Hamtramck with jobs that would allow them to provide for their families and feel honor.
In 2012, we received two requests for leather flaps and straps. We added this option to our customization line, and
everyone began adding leather to their bag!
In the fall of 2013, we took our largest financial leap and had an interactive website built. Customers could now see their
designs before ordering.
Over the past few years we have been able to move into our own workshop, start wholesaling our products, and continue
hiring more women.
As of January, 2015, we have 13 employees working at Better Life Bags
