Just before the beginning of the new summer period, Astra is making feverish preparations for one more season of development. Greece is a blessed country. Apart from any political interest and expediency, apart from any financial crisis, all together we can make an effort and change the game. In the field of tourism, the prospects are very positive and as far as we are concerned we rightfully remain the top airline of Thessaloniki since the summer period operation will provide direct connection of Thessaloniki with 24 destinations in Russia and Ukraine (thus boosting the local economy the best way possible), and with 13 popular domestic destinations. offering unique, money-saving and safe travel options. We should not forget that we never have a second chance for a first impression: we aspire to welcome you with a big smile and the best of moods. Besides, tough times dont last for ever tough people do! Yannis Zlatanis

Drama plays with com-edy, emotion and cynicism and the seduction plays with de-ception.For the very first time, the Opera is inaugurating a series of eve-ning performances for an opera written especially for children, as this spectacle can be appreciated as much by children as by adults, till the end of March. www.nationalopera.gr

Subjectiveness and random are an integral part of the human nature as well as the reference point and the basic axis for the interpretation of their work. This ex-hibition is a first effort to see art after 1945 in a pan-european context, the artists suggestions for the ideals of the ecu-menical human rig-hts of freedom, e-quality and demo-cracy are investiga-ted in thematics. The objective of the ex-hibition is to present the artistic produ-ction in all European areas, exceeding the stereotypes of dividing art between the East and the West, the North and the South. A series of excavations in Ancient Methoni from 2003 to the present date, has brought to light very important artifacts, literally "unfolding" aspects in the history of this thriving city. One of the findings with the biggest archeological im-portance originates from the "Underground", a construction bellow the ground where 191 jars marked with inscriptions were found, most of which are dated back in the 8th and 7th century B.C.. The importance of these artifacts lies in the fact that since the 8th century, when the alphabet started to be used in Greece, there are very few inscriptions and epigraphic documents. As a consequence, Methoni inscribed jars are truly invaluable. These are precisely the jars exhibited in the Thessaloniki Archeological Museum, said exhibition is of great interest to all ancient Greek culture amateurs and it will last until the end of December 2014 www.amth.gr

An interested proposition worthwhile noting. From February 8 to May 2014www.mmca.org.gr

On 18 November 2011 Thessaloniki was awarded the title of European Youth Ca-pital 2014. This is a title that is awarded for a year to a selected European city, a city that can present a wide-ranging pro-gramme of multifaceted activities, as well as innovative ideas and proposals concerning youth at the local, national and European level. The European Youth Capital initiative encourages the im-plementation of 'fresh' ideas and pro-grammes, aiming mainly at the multilevel participation of young people in society, while at the same time aspiring to pre-sent a model for the further develop-ment of policies concerning youth by joining together information and ap-plications from a number of European municipalities that have either taken huge steps in this direction or are still at the pilot stage, thus gaining a new out-look on things which makes them pio-neers in this area. The uniqueness of this initiative lies in the fact that it does not at any stage finance construction or infrast-ructure works, but supports a specific programme that places emphasis on and promotes the needs, ideas and dreams of young people. The first Euro-pean Youth Capital was Rotterdam in 2009, which was followed by Torino in

The implementation of the programme involves a broad range of activities based on four key principles: creation, participation, freedom of expression, solidarity. The process followed in order to win the title was a first for Thessaloniki, and it has already brought significant results for the city and its youth, from the very beginning. It has pro-moted and forged principles that constitute the quintessence of European Youth Capital 2014, these being solidarity and tolerance of the differences between young people; it has laid a strong foundation for cooperation and mutual understanding between people of different socioeconomic and cultural back-grounds, and has prepared the ground for adopting anti-systemic policies on youth at the national and European level. Most importantly, it has vigorously promoted the identity of our youth as active citizens with a strong say in the matters that concern their lives.

In the global geography it is most evident that there are cities with a distinguished past. Without a doubt Thessaloniki is one of them. In these cities there is one historic monu-ment that constitutes a semantic landmark, which is invariable in the passage of time. For Thessaloniki, dozens of historic references identify a monument most characteristic of the city, a leading reference point of its profile in space and time: the white tower. The White Tower of Thessaloniki is part of a more general fortification o the 15th century, used later on as the accommodation of Janissaries and then, some parts of it as a pri-son for those with death sentences. The White Tower takes the form of a cylindrical drum with a height of 33,9 m., a perimeter of 70 m. And a diameter of 22,7 m. It is a 6-floor fort with an interior staircase 120 m long which twists and screw in contact with the outside wall.

According to another version, the con-struction date of the Tower is around 1450-1470 and it is one the earliest sa-mples of ottoman fortifications. The main source regarding the year of construction of the White Tower was a marble inscription on the gate of the outer wall. This marble inscription was first mentioned in the manuscript histo-ric essays of the Turkish traveler, chro-nographer and intellectual, Evliya Ce-lebi. Such inscription does not exist nowadays. They say it was probably e-rased by Sultan Abdul Hamid II, ho-wever, other support that it could have been the work of the Greek com-man-ders in 1937 for unknown reasons. The date of this tower was 942 since the Hegira of the Messenger of the end of time In other words, according to the ins-cription, the Tower was buit by Sulei-man the Magnificent in the year 942 since the Hegira, namely, in 1535 AD, although the inscription was probably referring to the date of construction of the outer perimeter and not of the To-wer itself. Another date which is men-tioned is the year 974 since the Hegira, namely, 1566 AD.With regard to the architect of the To-wer, it is said, among others, that he could be Mimar Sinan, the famous Ar-chitect of Suleiman, and this is due to the similarity of the construction with another tower in Vlore, Albania, built in about the same period of time, in the 1530s.
