PRESENTING THE

Page 2: Between the Pages, Fall 2012

The old adage “If you’re not moving forward; you’re moving backward” has never been truer than it is in today’s rapidly changing environment. To ensure the library’s continued movement forward, we have been conducting an extensive market analysis, examining who uses the library, how our patrons use the library, and the technology trends that affect future library services.

We are excited about the progress of the study and want to extend our deepest appreciation to the nearly 4,000 residents and stakeholders who contributed to the success of this important study. Our customers and the citizens of Westerville gave their time, energies and talents to provide us a map to the future.

As the lyric of George Harrison states, “If you don’t know where you’re going, any road will take you there.” Thanks to the input of thousands of residents, we know the road we will be traveling and the destination. We look forward to sharing the results of the study and traveling the road to the future with you.

Re-innovating ourselves

Please join our 2012 Annual AppealThe Library Foundation is dedicated to helping enrich the collections and programs of the library, and fund raising efforts such as our Annual Appeal help with that goal. We ask for your support as we start our campaign. Soon, pamphlets will be available in the library and online at westervillelibrary.org/foundation. Donations can be directed to assisting with immediate needs of the library or building a fund for the future.

DirectionsNotes from Library Director Don W. Barlow

An exciting yearThe 2012 summer and winter reading programs, spring and fall Sit and Knit workshops, and our 19th annual Ice Cream Social – what an exciting year it has been so far! We hope you’ll stop in on Sundays between Thanksgiving and Christmas to enjoy the Music in the Atrium series. The Friends Shoppe continues to thrive due to the continued support of our loyal customers.

We are continuing to campaign for donations to help replace the library's Outreach Services van. The Friends purchased the current van 11 years ago and with its very busy schedule the time has come for replacement.

To those who have made donations, we extend our gratitude. If you would like to help, please utilize the form contained in this newsletter. – Arlene Roeder, President Friends of the Library

Families all over the country were fearfully watching as their young men marched off to war. In July 1862, the call went out from Washington for 300,000 more men to enlist in the Union Army. In August, twenty-six men from Blendon Township joined the 95th Ohio Volunteer Infantry (the Blendon quota was nineteen). Just 11 days later the soldiers of the 95th engaged in an all-day battle and lost 32 men – two from Blendon Township – August Riddell, a local farmer, and A.W. Stonestreet, an Otterbein student described as big-hearted, noble-faced, ambitious, and a fearless soldier.

The men of the 95th marched 12,000 miles through 8 states as the conflict continued. Men died of disease, of wounds, and as prisoners of war. G.W. Schrock tragically was wounded with one of the last shots fired in the Civil War on April 8, 1865 and died of his wounds.

Sunday, October 14th from 1pm to 4pm at Otterbein Cemetery, the Westerville Public Library will honor the over 125 Civil War veterans who are laid to rest there by telling the stories of seven of those men. Please join us.
