Today’s hospitals face immediate financial pressures caused by a growing number of

external and internal challenges. As a result, hospital leaders are looking for bottom-line solutions that will help them respond to urgent needs, while building the necessary funds to assure high standards of care for a modern society.

Philanthropic monies have long played a significant role in the establishment and development of Ireland’s hospitals. Today’s hospital and foundation leaders are now asked to redefine what philanthropy will mean for Irish hospitals in the 21st century.

However, this is a challenging time for fundraising in Ireland. Part 4 of the Charities Act 2009 came into force on the 5th September 2016, giving the Charities Regulator new powers which it will use for the protection of charities and charitable donations.

This Act gives investigative powers to the Charities Regulator including the ability to require charities to hand over documents and the power to search premises, obtain court

orders and impose sanctions on charity trustees and charitable organisations.

These enhanced powers are a very welcome step toward increasing public trust for charitable fundraising in the longterm. In the short term, we expect to see continued exposure of irregularities in charities including some of the 1800 voluntary agencies funded by the HSE.

How should those responsible for governing voluntary hospital income respond to both the new regulatory powers and likelihood of further public scandals? Do these changes represent opportunity and what can we do to lead in the competition for public trust?

This event looks beyond compliance towards a future where hospitals become some of the most trusted, respected and effective voluntary fundraising bodies in the State.

EVENTFORMAT

THE FUTURE SUGGESTS THAT PHILANTHROPY WILL INCREASE IN IMPORTANCE FOR FINANCIAL PLANNING AND MAY PROVIDE THE EDGE FOR SUCCESS IN HOSPITALS.

This event is structured to allow hospital leadership teams an opportunity to understand the philanthropic market and recognise the potential for hospitals to gain a competitive advantage through strategic governance.

To do this we have created a half-day free event, bringing together experts in Communications, Investment Governance and Philanthropy in Ireland. These experts will provide strategic advice through presentation and extended Q&A sessions.

We want this event to be of value to all participants and an opportunity to learn from each other and work together to become leaders in philanthropy.

I look forward to welcoming you and your colleagues.Neil Pope, MD Millington Pope
