EXTENDING THE EXPERIENCE: FLOATING PARTY!Celebrate things that float and extend the experience of your trip to see THE LIGHT PRINCESS by having a floating party in your classroom!
Decorations Have your students brainstorm floating decorations for your party. These decorations can include balloons, bubbles, feathers and more. Students can even make their own art that can hang from the ceiling so that it appears to be floating (snowflakes, mobiles, drawings of their favorite characters from THE LIGHT PRINCESS, etc.).
GamesFloat like a…Students are instructed to move from one side of the room to the other while floating like various things. For example: float like a balloon, float like a feather, float like an astronaut, float like a mermaid. Pick a student winner with the best float to give a brief floating lesson to the other students!
Floating Freeze DanceTell students to come up with a dance move inspired by the idea of floating. Once they have their floating dance move, turn on music and instruct them to dance around the room. When the music stops, they freeze! When the music comes back on, they continue their floaty dance.
Floating FriendsTell your students to bring their favorite stuffed animal to school with them on the day of the floating party. When the party begins, tell them that they are in charge of making sure their friend is floating through the entire party. Have them explore the different ways they can make their stuffed animals float (they can take inspiration from the way the princess floated in THE LIGHT PRINCESS or come up with new ways for their stuffed animals to float). Have a floating mixer so that all the stuffed animals can go around the room to meet the other stuffed animals and talk about their experience floating in the air!
The Main EventLay down a large blue sheet or blanket in the middle of the room to create a “floating bubble” where all your students can sit. Read THE LIGHT PRINCESS (or another story that involves floating) to your students while they blow bubbles. For an extra sweet treat, make root beer floats that your students can drink during storytime!
