Beyond the Resume, Part 1

Why resume is increasingly becoming outdated…

Resume outlasted all technology changes…

From an employer’s perspective

• All resumes look the same

• Especially true for students, who have little or no work experience

• “Résumés are screening out exceptional people”*

• Education and GPA is not a good predictor of success

• “most résumés don’t tell employers what they need to know”*

• Resume tells you have you have done, not will you able to do in the future

• Student have little to show for

• “we don’t have that time anymore”*

• Average time looking at resume is 6 seconds

• In spite of all the tools, recruiting process has not gotten shorter

6* “Ready, Set, Jump!”, Fortune, Feb. 1, 2018

From Student’s perspective… it’s actually the same

• “all resume look the same”*

• How do I stand out from the crowd?

• “Résumés are screening out exceptional people”*

• “if only I get an interview”

• “if only they get to see me”

• “if only….”

• “most résumés don’t tell employers what they need to know”*

• Behavior, skill, etc… is not conveyed in a resume

• Student does not know how to do it

• “we don’t have that time anymore”*

• Many students postpone job search because they dread writing a resume

Current & Future Trends

• Resume is not enough

• Leveraging mobile

• Majority of job searches are on mobile

• Majority of job applications are trending that way

• Video capabilities

• Real-time, push notifications

• Job search needs to be easy

• Workforce 2.0, gig economy or short-term projects, is fastest growing segment in the labor market

• Half the labor market will be in the gig economy by 2020**

• It has not made it to the student segment yet but the appetite is there

• Students gain valuable real-world experience & company access to an under-utilized high quality labor market

1st define your brand = unique value

• Who you are and what you want to be known for?

• What field or industry am I in or want to be in?

• What are the words I would use to describe my work?

• Who is my target audience?

• What do you have to offer?

• What services do I have to offer people?

• What do I do that makes me stand out from everyone else?

• What do people perceive you to be?

• How do I make people feel?

• How do people benefit by working with me?

• What words do others use to describe me?

“Those who know how to live and manage their own brand will earn respect in any situation.” Glenn Lopis

Importance of STARs: Situation Task Action Results

• Supports your value proposition (your brand)

• Builds confidence, distinguishes you from other candidates (“WOW” factor”)

• Articulates your successes in a meaningful, responsive way

• Demonstrates you have encountered and solved a similar problem

• Makes a stronger impression on interviewers and networking connections

“A company may have two candidates but the defining element is potential”*

10 Resume Tips

14

Resume is: • a professional ad• audience is your future

employer/boss• state benefits they will get by

hiring you vs just about you

1. Keep resume to 1-2 pages (except ATS, CVs)2. Customize 5% of resume for each job app. with

keywords from job description to avoid rejection3. Achievement based (STARs)4. Don’t use personal pronouns, “I” “we” “our or

“was responsible for”5. Avoid overused adjectives, “team player”,

problem-solver”, “change-agent”6. Don’t end with “references available on request”7. Job history for last 10-12 years only

MODERN TIPS:8. Include LinkedIn URL address(customize) &

pay attention to headline (below your name)9. Designers/creative skills: add portfolio link 10. Include soft skills up top

PROOFREAD several times & have friends review

Make it “skimmable” & most important at top

15Resume Example

Commercial: quickly and effectively market yourself

16

Your 30-second commercial should:

● Identify who you are

● Highlight a few strengths and accomplishments

● Show how you can bring added value to an organization

● Be concise

Useful when writing resumes/cover letters/emails or when leaving voicemails

Practice to deliver your 30-second commercial seamlessly with confidence

Video Tips

• Treat as if hiring manager is in room with you (dress properly)

• Have an environment free of noise and distractions

• Check what you look like ahead of time:

• what is the background behind you?

• find a location with good lighting (not in front of a window - you could be in the shadow)

• is it a good centered head shot of you? adjust camera closer/farther away, up/down

• look at the camera not the screen

• practice video chat with someone to ensure a great connection (better to use an ethernet connection to avoid line dropping)

• Sit up straight and be succinct

• Take deep breaths as needed before answering

• Relax, be yourself and SMILE 17
