From an employer’s perspective
• All resumes look the same
• Especially true for students, who have little or no work experience
• “Résumés are screening out exceptional people”*
• Education and GPA is not a good predictor of success
• “most résumés don’t tell employers what they need to know”*
• Resume tells you have you have done, not will you able to do in the future
• Student have little to show for
• “we don’t have that time anymore”*
• Average time looking at resume is 6 seconds
• In spite of all the tools, recruiting process has not gotten shorter

From Student’s perspective… it’s actually the same
• “all resume look the same”*
• How do I stand out from the crowd?
• “Résumés are screening out exceptional people”*
• “if only I get an interview”
• “if only they get to see me”
• “if only….”
• “most résumés don’t tell employers what they need to know”*
• Behavior, skill, etc… is not conveyed in a resume
• Student does not know how to do it
• “we don’t have that time anymore”*
• Many students postpone job search because they dread writing a resume

1st define your brand = unique value
• Who you are and what you want to be known for?
• What field or industry am I in or want to be in?
• What are the words I would use to describe my work?
• Who is my target audience?
• What do you have to offer?
• What services do I have to offer people?
• What do I do that makes me stand out from everyone else?
• What do people perceive you to be?
• How do I make people feel?
• How do people benefit by working with me?
• What words do others use to describe me?
“Those who know how to live and manage their own brand will earn respect in any situation.” Glenn Lopis
Importance of STARs: Situation Task Action Results
• Supports your value proposition (your brand)
• Builds confidence, distinguishes you from other candidates (“WOW” factor”)
• Articulates your successes in a meaningful, responsive way
• Demonstrates you have encountered and solved a similar problem
• Makes a stronger impression on interviewers and networking connections
“A company may have two candidates but the defining element is potential”*

• Have an environment free of noise and distractions
• Check what you look like ahead of time:
• what is the background behind you?

• is it a good centered head shot of you? adjust camera closer/farther away, up/down
• look at the camera not the screen
• practice video chat with someone to ensure a great connection (better to use an ethernet connection to avoid line dropping)
