Welcome to Oxford 2014

this is our first event in oxford and we are expecting it to be just as successful and informative as all of our previous events elsewhere.

today’s event is about bringing together the Armed Forces community with the commercial world and facilitating one-to-one engagement with a wide range of exhibitors, who are not only keen to attract potential employees and/or promote interest in training opportunities, but also to offer a wide range of transitional and resettlement advice to attendees – which means this event comes at a crucial time, not just for those leaving the Military via natural resettlement, but also those that have received notice in tranche 4 redundancies.

today provides a great platform for those personnel affected to embrace the employment and training opportunities plus a variety of resettlement help, support and advice available to you – including cV-writing assistance from BFrS’s cV expert, Sian richardson.

If you are interested in having your cV seen by all of today’s employers, please drop a copy off at our cV drop at the reception desk or email it to [email protected].

Whether you are just starting to consider your next career move, your departure from the Military is imminent, you have already left or you are a reservist, I urge you to take full advantage of the expertise here today and the networking opportunities. the saying, “It is not what you know, but who you know” is very true and something worth bearing in mind when making your next move. this event is a great opportunity to build your network – so please leave all reservations at the door and approach as many exhibitors as you can to get the most out of the day.

Finally, we are very interested in hearing what you think about our events and services, so please do let us hear what you have to say, whether it be to one of our team at the event or retrospectively by emailing [email protected] with the subject “BFrS oxford careers Event”. Your feedback is important.

thank you and enjoy today’s event.

Get the Most from Today’s Event

today’s event provides a huge variety of possibilities to someone making the transition from Military to civilian life. these include employment, training, networking and support opportunities for Armed Forces personnel during all stages of their resettlement and beyond.

We have compiled this short guide offering proven tips and advice to ensure you get the absolute most from this event.

1. Use the MapMounted in the entrance area there is a large map of today’s event. use this to plan your visit around all of the event’s exhibitors to ensure you do not miss out on anything.

2. Approach new opportunities with an open mindYou may have an idea of where you want your next career to be, although the skills you have may suit you for a role you may not have even considered. By approaching all opportunities with an open mind you may find your dream job is in an industry you may have previously overlooked.

For example, everyone knows Harrods is a luxury retailer. But to operate they also need employees skilled in logistics, functions, catering, shop fitting, security, accounting etc.

3. Make the best first impressionWhen approaching an exhibitor, think about the best way to sell yourself and your skills. Find out what they are looking for and consider why you are the right candidate for them. Ask questions about the role – as well as being the right person for the job, the job must also be right for you.

use this event as an opportunity to talk to the exhibitors and find out what it is like to work there from an insider’s perspective.

4. Take notesnetworking is at the heart of all BFrS career Events. If you take the contact details and business cards from people you speak to today you can research their company websites. the back of this guide contains details of today’s exhibitors so please refer to these, too. the people you meet today could become instrumental in forging your future career.

5. Get free CV helpMilitary personnel often struggle to capture their skills and experience in a civilian cV. one-to-one cV writing assistance is available at today’s event and we strongly suggest you take your cV along for some free professional guidance.

6. Play the long gameMany employers will be planning future projects and are on the lookout to recruit suitable candidates to help complete them. If they have no current opportunities that interest you (or you are not available to start work immediately) ask about future projects that may be in the pipeline.

Ask exhibitors about what will make you more attractive to them as a prospective employee so you can plan your next steps and training accordingly.

7. Have funtoday is about enjoying yourself, meeting many new people and finding new career and training opportunities that may lead to long-term careers. Have fun, be confident and approach any and all exhibitors.

the response to train2train’s Compliance Training Instructor course has been a phenomenal success, and completion of this course now leads to delegates being able to deliver 15 accredited qualifications.

As a dynamic and forward-thinking company, and in order to remain at the forefront of training provision and technology, we continue to invest in the development of our products. train2train has recently moved to the iPad Mini, which is the resource used on our compliance training Instructor course (ctI). this is one of our innovative ideas, primarily to reduce the carbon footprint and to bring a whole new interactive learning experience to all delegates. All presentations, tutor thumbnails and associated resources are located on the iPad Mini, which can be used in conjunction with a PowerPoint projector to deliver training. All ctI delegates retain their iPad Mini after completion of the course for further instruction for their own future delivery.

to complement our exceptional course delivery, all train2train courses are delivered using Highfield training materials: www.highfield.co.uk. In addition to this Highfield Awarding Body for compliance (HABc) accepts all train2train qualified instructors to deliver their suite of qualifications.

Writing Your CV

Firstly, what is your CV for?the purpose of your cV is to quickly communicate to an employer that you are the right person to help take their company to the next level. Hr departments spend an average of 30 seconds looking at each cV. With such a short time frame, the purpose of your cV is to catch the reader’s attention and get your foot in the door. Imagine your cV to be a huge billboard poster with letters 10-feet tall stating precisely why you are right for that particular job.

Many employers actively seek the skills and qualities held by Armed Forces personnel. However, Service leavers often find it difficult to translate their Military training and experience into a language that civilian employers understand.

Far too often highly competent Service leavers miss out on opportunities because their cVs do not properly reflect all that they can bring to an employer. to showcase the many specialist and transferable skills a career in the Armed Forces has given you, you must create a cV that speaks the professional language of the civilian workplace.

De-Militarise your CVthe Military has its own jargon that someone who has never served would struggle to understand. For examples of this, think of what rank titles such as “Lcpl” would mean to someone outside the Military. Likewise, cVs are generally written in a type of formal “business” language which you will need to understand to write a winning cV.

the first step is to de-militarise your cV. Assume whoever will read your cV knows nothing about the Military and write it accordingly. A “corporal” may translate to “team Leader” and, depending on the type of work you did in the Military, you may need to research the equivalent civilian terminologies.

For the most part though, you are looking to showcase your skills in a simple way that anyone will be able to understand. If in doubt, ask a civilian friend to read it before you send it to an employer.

Find your Transferable Skillstransferable skills include team-working, people management and problem-solving skills – the type of skills that are valuable to any workplace.

By showcasing your transferable skills, an employer will know that although you performed different tasks in the Armed Forces, you have the skills and experience to quickly adapt and excel in a role within their company.

to find your transferable skills, look back over your career in the Military. Write down examples of tasks you were set and the positive outcomes you achieved, teams you have led and the number of subordinates you managed, the cash value of any projects or equipment it was your role to oversee, times when you had to create reports or deliver presentations to your superiors, or any times you had to liaise or work alongside different ranks or groups within the Armed Forces.

Factcurriculum Vitae (cV) literally translates as “the course of my life”.

15A r t I c L E S & A d V I c E

once you have found some good examples, match them to the requirements for the job you are applying for.

Ask for FeedbackIf your cV is winning you interviews, it works. If it is not, find out why. contact the employer and politely ask for feedback.

take all advice into careful consideration when improving your cV but remember that opinions are subjective and feedback may vary from person to person. If you begin to get call-backs after you have implemented a change you know you are on the right track.

Your cV will never be “finished”. It will continue to organically develop as your career progresses. You should try to regularly redraft your cV to include any pertinent updates whilst they are still fresh in your mind – you never know when an up-to-date cV may come in handy.

Read the Full GuideBFrS’s free downloadable ‘Guide to Writing a cV’ contains useful information and advice on every step of the cV-writing process.

Explosive Learning Solutions: Project Management

If you are looking for a career outside the forces in project management, you will also benefit from the latest Facilitation APMG accreditation to add to our Business Management Bundle for Project Managers, which includes PrIncE2 and APMP for PrIncE2 certifications. You will have a far better chance of getting through to interview stage with these certifications on your cV. once you are sat in front of someone you will then be in a position to sell yourself with your vast experience.

Project managers are often faced with challenges that have nothing to do with managing projects and these challenges often apply within the human domain of managing the people and the process around the project. Effectively managing the people and their interactions becomes almost as important as effectively managing the project and it could be argued that the former is as rewarding as it is strategic.

How do you feel when you leave a meeting or workshop you have led? Was the session productive, or did your colleagues say their time could have been better spent?

APMG’s new certification in Facilitation addresses how project managers can plan meetings to use time efficiently and achieve the maximum output possible to contribute to project success.

Facilitation Skills for Project Managers enables project managers to effectively facilitate group/team interactions, so they are focused on achieving project success. It very much focuses on the team and is collaborative in its nature. this is an active learning experience for all concerned and project managers who have learnt facilitation skills reap the benefits of:

▪ Enabling exchange of information

▪ Ensure projects are moving forward

▪ collaborative working to remove barriers and reach consensus (trust)

Being a Project Manager and a Facilitator requires varying skills and expertise and we are beginning to see that when combined, they really add value to not only the organisation but also to team cohesion. Where most elements of a project operate around and contribute to the goal, the facilitator can act as a component part of the project ‘trinity’ where if you remove one element, it will collapse.

Project Managers who speak to us are realising the value of keeping a group energised, focused on task, and producing effective results. Whether they lead a problem-solving team, work with executives, or assisting the change process with their own group through the collaborating more effectively, they are saying that facilitation is a critical skill to possess and it is one that leads to success.

The University forWorld-Class Professionals

Manchester Metropolitan University is here to support, develop and enhance the career prospects and employment opportunities for military personnel who have left the Forces, are planning to leave or want to continue their professional development. We would be very happy to welcome you to our state of the art building in Manchester where you could:

• Learn about our range of courses and qualifications

• Collect information and receive guidance

• Meet out tutors and advisers

The types of qualifications available range from foundation degree programmes through to a Certificate in Leadership and Project Management or a Master

of Business Administration (MBA). Military personnel need to be aware that they do not always require an undergraduate degree in order to progress onto a specialist Masters programme or MBA. Indeed some of the best students on the MBA have been from the military with no previous academic qualifications.

“I needed to find a way to translate 11 years of operational military experience as a Navigator and Diving Officer, into business skills recognisable in ‘civvy street’. It enabled me to understand the theories and concepts underpinning the skills I had developed and used daily in the military.”

Explosive Learning Solutions: Social Media

Whilst your certifications are very important it is also very important to market yourself through social media, which is basically putting your experience and certifications out to 1,000s of organisations who may be hunting for someone with your talents! Explosive Learning Solutions run a 1-day Social Media course specifically aimed at LinkedIn to help you put together your profile to sell yourself to get that job you want in the future! When you attend your first course with us, our staff will be available to look over your cV and to give you guidance if required.

86% of FtSE 100 businesses used LinkedIn to connect to with 1.9 million people (July 2012). It is the most popular social networking site for the uK’s top firms. LinkedIn has become an important aspect of corporate recruitment.

If you have not come across it before, LinkedIn is a website which allows you to list your contacts, see who they know, and then see who they are connected to in turn. You can test out the theory of “6 degrees of Separation”. It is focused on business users.

this is the most important piece of social media for job seekers and career changers.

What do you need to do?

▪ Set up a good profile that describes what you can do, provide enough information so recruiters want to make contact and not too much that they disregard you as they ‘think’ they have the information they need and move on.

▪ don’t over civilianise your profile – it makes you look as if you have no concept of the commercial market.. only put a director if you are actually a director!

▪ Link to your website (if you are starting your own business).

▪ Put an appropriate photo on your profile.

▪ Link with people intelligently; maintain the integrity of your network – nobody but you can see how many connections you have after 500.

▪ do not be lazy – say where you have met someone and why they should link with you.

▪ check your “links” routinely – what they are doing and who they are connecting with.

▪ In resettlement you are marketing yourself. Look for past acquaintances who are already in industry – they may be influencers.

▪ consider Premium – it makes you easier to find.

For self-marketing
