WELCOME TO PORTSMOUTH 2015

One of those platforms is our programme of live Career Transition Events that we run each year around the UK. So far this year we have already organised and run 6 extremely successful events and today’s event here at Portsmouth brings the 2015 programme to a close.

BFRS events provide great platforms for personnel to embrace the employment and training opportunities, plus the variety of resettlement help, support and advice that is available to you, including CV-writing assistance. Our events facilitate one-to-one engagement and as usual, there is a diverse range of exhibitors here, who can add value to the transition process, some of them are regular exhibitors and some are new, but all of them have a lot to offer so it’s worth taking the time to visit each and every stand. Some are keen to attract potential employees, others to promote interest in training opportunities. Additionally, they are also here to offer a wide range of transitional/resettlement advice and support

to all attendees, whether a Service Leaver, Veteran, Reservist or Family member; there is something here for you.

Whether you are just starting to consider your next career move, your departure from the military is imminent, you have already left, or you are a reservist, having an extensive network is key to accessing opportunities and a strong support mechanism. This event is a great opportunity to help you build and develop your network – so please leave all your reservations at the door and approach as many exhibitors as you can to get the most out of the day.

Finally, in order for us to improve what we offer, we ask you to give us your feedback, so please fill in the feedback form at reception or send us a follow up email.

Thank you and enjoy today’s event.

Making the transition from military to civilian life is probably the most difficult thing that most military leavers will do during their service and it is made more difficult by the fact that everyone’s needs and requirements are different. A ‘one size fits all’ type solution, just will not tick all the boxes, that is why BFRS have created a focal point, managed through a variety of both online and offline platforms where the Armed Forces Community and the commercial world can engage with each other more easily.

Today’s event provides a huge variety of possibilities to someone making the transition from Military to Civilian life. These include employment, training, networking and support opportunities for Armed Forces personnel during all stages of their resettlement and beyond.

If you’re not sure where you want to work or what you want to do when leaving the forces, a careers fair can introduce you to a range of possibilities. Just don’t engage exhibitors in conversation unless you have at least some idea of what they do. Keep a copy of the event guide with you for reference and chat to someone on the BFRS stand if you need a bit more guidance.

For most Service Leavers this will be new, so if you’re a nervous, see this as an opportunity

Get the Most from Today’s Eventto practice speaking to hiring managers. Try and step outside your comfort zone by setting a personal target: identify two or three employers you want to speak to and prepare some questions beforehand.

After the event, make time to digest all the information you’ve gathered. Think about how you will use this to focus your search or enhance your applications.

Aim to get the contact details of people you have met. They can form part of your network not just for the immediate, but also for the long-term future.

If you think of a question later, contact the person you met to find out if they can help.

Most of all, have fun! Today is about enjoying yourself, meeting many new people and finding new career and training opportunities that may lead to long-term careers. Have fun, be confident and approach any and all exhibitors!

Tim, first of all, can you tell us a bit about yourself and your time in the military?

I retired in 2004 from the Army as Colonel – I commanded the 1st Battalion, Royal Irish Regiment during the Gulf War and spent a great deal of my career with the Special Air Service, joining as Troop commander in 1988 and serving during the first Gulf War amongst other things.

From an early age you wanted to join the army, why was this?

Well, I had family in the army and it was a lifestyle which attracted me, it seemed like something I would have enjoyed – and I did. I was of course in the cadets which really just sent me on my way.

On transition, teamwork and THAT speech By Jacquie McGeoch

How did you find your transition - was it difficult to go back onto civilian life?

I was really too busy to find it hard as such. [When departing] I had to move fast as I had a family of 5 children and had to get a house together amongst other things. I had to move quickly.

Last year Lord Ashcroft published the Veterans Transition Review – what’s your opinion of the review and are the Government doing enough to support the armed forces community?

I think that given the number of conflicts there’s been recently, the Armed Forces do need special attention, in particular with

TIM COLLINS

regard to the amount of injuries that people are bringing back, both physical and mental. There is more help needed.

There’s so many organisations at the moment supporting the AFC, it seems quite disjointed, do you think anything can be done to make them more regulated and bring some sort of cohesion?

I do think there is the need for someone to pull together the number of charities that are working for servicemen and women - the difficulty I see is essentially the way their work is too widely spread, not focused enough. I think that we need someone in uniform probably Vice-chief of the Defence Staff to help pull things together on behalf of servicemen and women. Some of the most

Page 10: BFRS Portsmouth Military Community Careers Event, Sponsored by BAE Systems

10 | Portsmouth November 2015 Event www.bfrss.org.uk

important charities are the ones that have been around the longest, well established, the likes of SSAFA who have been around for 125 odd years, the British Legion who have been around for a long time also. Then the crucial charities which we can’t look away from the 3 bodyguards as I call them, Combat Stress for the mentally scarred, Blesma for the limbless, dunstons for the blind (they are now blind veterans).

On the business side of things, do military values align well within the corporate world?

Well I suppose yes when it comes to my particular business (New Century Consulting). We’re in the business of helping clients establish police forces in the military, worldwide. I’m harvesting the skills that I already have that are essential to me - but I think that the discipline that military individuals bring to this world are important, things like not having to be supervised etc. Where I’m coming from, we were more of a clan than a regiment, so with what I do now it’s very much having colleagues rather than employees. It’s that thing of working together.

In the Military you have the Colonel Boyd Cycle, do you think that can be transferred into the business world?

I think it is essential, I think business after a fashion does that, the difficulty is if you go to any airport or bus station you’ll see racks of books groaning with business know how and the difficulty is a lot of these so called gurus, what they do is they take very simple concepts and make them hideously complicated and confuse things. If we look back to the military you can actually see it in its pure form, there’s nothing new under the sun and the facets of business leadership that are required in industry already exist right there in the Army.

How do you feel about the defence cuts - the new Super Regiments, for example?

Well with regards to the Super Regiments I prefer for people to call things what they are: this is not about making things better, this is about making it easier to cut. The Super Regiments were all about reduction and we all knew that. My message to politicians and senior Army officers is we’re not stupid don’t play us along with this bigger and better nonsense we knew it was there to be cut, ultimately the United Kingdom has to decide where it wants to stand in the world, does it want to be a global trading nation with interests across the globe and therefore an expeditionary Army or does it want to be a small European country on the fringe with part of the European preparedness which is essentially a form of aggressive camping.

You have slept on the streets to highlight the plight of homeless veterans, how did that make you feel seeing Ex military struggling to cope?

The reality is, there is very few military on the streets and when they’re on the streets they’re not there for very long because the British Legion and SSAFA tend to pick them up.There is some who go repeatedly back on the streets and fall out of care, generally speaking these people will not have long to live they are usually in the grip of severe chemical usage either drink or drugs and by and large I would say 95-100% of people who end up on the street are there because of chemical addiction, usually with alcohol and so it goes hand and glove. The rumour that circulated a few years ago was within a mile of Nelsons column there was a 1,000 homeless servicemen, and that was simply not true.

Do you feel that when anyone leaves the Armed Forces they fall into a disadvantaged community or do you think that’s just the minority?

It is the minority, by and large people leave the Armed Forces better off. Look at people like Kriss Akabusi who left a childrens home aged 16 ½ joined the Army to have somewhere to sleep somewhere to eat and because he joined he went on to become a bronze medallist.

Your ‘Eve of battle speech’ did you realise the impact it would have at the time?

To be honest I didn’t give it a second thought, it wasn’t written down!

What advice would you give to those making the transition?

The first thing I’d say is don’t panic. Do your homework and understand that there is a very willing world out there, and watch what you read in the media. The other thing is whatever you’re doing at the point you leave the army, you won’t be doing in 18 months, you’ll be doing something far better. Do your best whatever it is your doing but be aware your real calling will find you - listen out for it.

Would you change anything about your time in the Forces?

No, I was very lucky. The thing about Army careers is just enjoy them, don’t worry too hard about it, itll be fine.

AFFEstablished over 30 years ago, AFF supports everyone with a serving solider in their life, Regular or Reserve, wherever they are in the world.

Families are at the centre of AFF and we offer much-needed guidance to navigate the many challenges that UK and overseas postings may bring. Our areas of expertise are housing, health and additional needs, education and childcare, allowances, and spousal employment and foreign and commonwealth issues. We help families access services and support, cut through red tape or make sense of grey areas. When we don’t have the answers, we know people who do and we put families in touch with the people that specialise in their area of need.

Over the years we have supported families through their transition from Service life to civilian life, explaining access to social housing and making sense of the Forces Help to Buy

Scheme. We also recognise the importance of spousal employment when it comes to securing a mortgage, or the credit rating required for private renting as well as seeing the family through any employment gaps the soldier may have before they settle into their new life. For foreign and commonwealth families there can be even more challenges as securing citizenship for the solider and the family can be costly and confusing.

With our in depth understanding of allowances and entitlements AFF is here to help. There are many brilliant initiatives out there to help the soldier and the spouse find employment. We have a great knowledge of training providers, especially the good quality free ones and the benefits available to the Service leaver. We would like to encourage families to take a look at our website, like our facebook page and subscribe to our quarterly magazine Army&You. We even have a jobs portal on our Army&You website. Once you have settled into your own home and your new life as a civilian family we hand over the reigns to the many wonderful charities and organisations better positioned to help you.

Job search techniques change, the labour market changes and job descriptions change. But what more or less stays the same is the job interview. It’s your chance to sell yourself.

The first 30 seconds of a job interview are the most important – so if you want to be a cut above the rest you need to be on the ball. Rob Yeung, a business psychologist, maintains that an interview is all about the three Ps. “You need to prepare, you need to practise, and then, on the day, you need to perform.

16 | Portsmouth November 2015 Event www.bfrss.org.uk

Stand out from the crowd and get yourself noticed! Here are 10 tips for interview success.

CV TIPS

01 FIRST IMPRESSIONS COUNTGreet your interviewer with a smile and firm handshake. Give eye contact. Try to make small talk during the walk from the reception area to the interview room. Liz Anderson, a human resources manager says, “You have to sell yourself before you can sell anything else and the first 30 seconds are when the interviewer subconsciously makes decisions about whether they like you or not and whether you will fit into the team.”

BE PREPAREDRe-read your CV and the job advert just before the interview. Do your research thoroughly: Look at the company web site or obtain literature. You may be asked about the salary you are after so make sure you research that as well.

DON’T WAFFLEAnswer questions properly – even if you need a few moments’ silence to collect your thoughts. Anderson advises, “It’s better to say you need a minute to think about your answer rather than speak instantly and regret it afterwards.”

WHY SHOULD THEY HIRE YOU?Most job adverts will list qualities they’re looking for – a team worker, a good communicator – so it’s up to you to think of examples of how you can demonstrate these skills. Be ready to talk about your knowledge, experience, abilities and skills. Have at least three strong points about yourself that you can relate to the company and job on offer.

02

03

04

Page 17: BFRS Portsmouth Military Community Careers Event, Sponsored by BAE Systems

Portsmouth November 2015 Event | 17www.bfrss.org.uk

05 BE POSITIVEYour interviewer will be thinking about what it would be like to work with you, so the last thing they’ll want to hear is you talking about your boss or current colleagues behind their back. Interviewers like to see someone who enjoys a challenge and is enthusiastic.

REMEMBER YOUR BODY LANGUAGEIt is not what you say, but how you say it. During the interview, do not fold your arms and lean back or look to the floor! Sit upright and try to maintain good eye contact. Use your hands and lean forward when making a point. Many people cannot think and control their body language at the same time, which is why you need to prepare.

EXPECT THE UNEXPECTEDYour interviewer may try to catch you off guard: A survey by OfficeAngels has revealed that 90 per cent of employers ask ‘killer’ questions in interviews. It is impossible to plan for every difficult question, such as “How would your colleagues describe you?” but try to appear relaxed and in control. Ask the interviewer to repeat the question if necessary but do not evade it. Hopefully you will not befall the fate of those job candidates at B&Q who were asked to dance to “Blame it on the Boogie”!

DEVELOP RAPPORTShow energy, a sense of humour and smile. Jean Smith, a social anthropologist says: “It’s infectious, being positive and enthusiastic.” Ask your interviewer questions about themselves and any issues the business is facing.

CLARIFY ANYTHING YOU ARE UNSURE OFIf you are not certain what are meant by a particular question, ask for clarification. At the end, ask the interviewer if there is anything else he or she needs to know about. Do not be afraid to ask when you are likely to hear if you have been successful or not.

REMEMBER YOUR MANNERSIt is better to choose than to be chosen. Tell the interviewer why you are interested in the company and job opportunity. Ask them for a business card and follow it up by sending a “thank-you” e-mail or letter, saying how much you enjoyed meeting them and how interested you are. Take the opportunity to detail the key advantages you bring. By following the three Ps – prepare, practise and perform, you can turn yourself into a candidate who would not look out of place on “The Apprentice.”

Have you ever watched a TV programme called ‘Location, Location, Location’, or perhaps ‘A Home In The Sun’? If you have, you’ll be familiar with the format; a couple want a dream home in a specific location within some pretty tight guide lines, not the least of which is that the property is ‘within their budget’.

Well, that’s the service Forces Homes provide for service men and women whose lives are too complicated to allow them to find their perfect home by themselves.

Our story starts a little over 10 years ago, when WO1 Wilton ‘Will’ Brown left the Army, faced with the primary task of finding a new home for his family. He found it not only time consuming and frustrating, but navigating through the legal and financial process, negotiating with estate agents (who had the sellers best interests at heart and not his), was also problematic.

Whilst still in the Army, Will had seen firsthand the bewilderment seasoned veterans experienced when approaching their final days in the Service and faced potential homelessness when made to evacuate their Service Family Accommodation. A recent Forces publication (AFCAS 2012) found that home

Helping to find that perfect home

FORCES HOMES

Page 19: BFRS Portsmouth Military Community Careers Event, Sponsored by BAE Systems

Portsmouth November 2015 Event | 19www.bfrss.org.uk

ownership within the Army was the lowest of all the Services at 33%. That means that on leaving the Service 67% of Army personnel and their families effectively become homeless.

Believing that the best way to prevent homelessness within ex Forces members was best tackled by increasing home ownership whilst still serving, Will set up Forces Homes as the buyer’s agent, dedicated to getting the best quality homes at the lowest prices, with the least possible hassle to serving and ex members of the Armed Forces. Since then, Forces Homes has sourced over 800 homes for Forces and ex Forces personnel and their families.

Perhaps the best way to explain what Forces Homes do is to walk you through a real example: Soldier ‘A’ was based in Germany with his family, was on exercise in Canada, and wanted to buy a home in his native Northern Ireland (NI). Following a telephone call with our mortgage brokers to find out what he could comfortably afford, we spoke to soldier ‘A’ to get a list of criteria regarding his perfect home and its location. Everyone has differing criteria when choosing their home dependent upon their circumstances. Soldier ‘A’ wanted a 2 bed roomed property with a garden to the rear for his children to play safely in, within walking distance to a primary school (to save buying a second car for his wife), and nearby shops and amenities such as the Doctor’s Clinic.

Page 20: BFRS Portsmouth Military Community Careers Event, Sponsored by BAE Systems

20 | Portsmouth November 2015 Event www.bfrss.org.uk

Armed with that information, our team travelled to NI and sourced 4 properties that met all his criteria, creating on each property, a DVD virtual tour (inside and out). These DVD’s along with aerial photographs of the area showing schools, shops, doctors surgeries etc, were compiled and placed in a property report which was sent to the soldier.

The soldier selected a property and asked us to negotiate the lowest possible cost on his behalf. (We always aim to negotiate a discount on the asking price between 5 and 10%). Our offer was accepted, and we arranged for the soldier to visit the property. 5 weeks later, we organised the removals wagon for the soldier, and he and his young family moved into his new home.

Given the soldier’s circumstances (based in Germany, on exercise in Canada and wanting to find a home in NI,) can you imagine the

logistics nightmare plus the cost of repeatedly visiting NI until he eventually found a home he was happy with?

Not all our clients need the full property sourcing service we provide. Many of our clients may have seen a property in an estate agent’s window, or driven passed a home for sale, want to buy it but don’t know the next step. For those customers we simply get them speaking to our mortgage brokers to find out if they can afford the property, we do some desk top research on the property to make sure it’s not in a flood plain or in an area previously mined (to ensure that it is acceptable to any lender), before negotiating hard with the estate agent to get the best possible price for the property. Once our offer is accepted by the agent, we instruct solicitors on behalf of our clients, and manage the whole process seamlessly to completion.

Page 21: BFRS Portsmouth Military Community Careers Event, Sponsored by BAE Systems

Portsmouth November 2015 Event | 21

Not everyone that comes to us wants to buy a home to live in. To some people their Forces lifestyle means they can’t by a home to live in, and instead prefer to buy a property for investment purposes, having a tenant pay the mortgage for them. For these people, we again arrange finance, source a property in a good rental area, and through our partners Countrywide, arrange a tenant finding and property management service, that is the perfect armchair investor’s solution.

Is there a need for this service? The fact that we’ve done it over 800 times is testimony enough. Is it a good service?

Our clients tell us so. In fact, we now have clients for whom we found a property 10 years ago, who are now returning and asking us to find their next home for them. Plus, with 10 years of experience, we are the leaders in our field. Our company property is owned by ourselves, and provides plenty of space to expand into as we grow.

And what of the future? At Forces Homes we don’t rest on our laurels. We have recently entered a new and exciting growth period. Such is our standing within the property world, that we have been approached by a nationwide construction company to represent them as they build 100’s of affordable homes across the UK, at a cost below the market value, and exclusively available to the uniformed services.

This project has been in the planning stage for over a year (whilst being a dream of Will’s for over 10 years), and we will shortly be releasing our first 21 homes to be built in Catterick, North Yorkshire. These properties are exclusively for Forces personnel, and will represent the single, largest initiative to increase home ownership within the Forces, whilst ultimately reducing the levels of homelessness amongst ex Forces members.

Should you have any questions about the services Forces Homes provide, or would like to be kept informed about any future affordable homes we may be building in your area, contact Forces Homes on 01748 821118, [email protected] or visit our website at www.forceshomes.co.uk

I am used to advising military and civilian clients about how to buy and sell property, most recently I gave a series of talks to 26 Regiment in Guttersloh. Their need was to understand more about the forces ‘Help To Buy’ scheme and the UK property market in advance of their return home, but the advice I am giving to you is more about settling down after life in the military, although much applies to both.

First - Getting prepared • Instruct your lawyer early. Give them time to

do the necessary paperwork and ID checks. If you’re abroad, we will accept a copy of your passport certified by your senior officer. The whole transaction can be done remotely if that’s easier for you.

• Get your head around the process so you understand what is expected of you and when. Lawyers can only work on instructions from you so you’ll need to be available either by email or on the phone. If you’re deployed or unavailable, you’ll need to give someone else authority to

deal with things in your absence. If it’s your co-owner then that’s easy, otherwise we will need a simple power of attorney. We’ve done a completion on board ship before so it can be done! We’ll give you a checklist to show what will happen.

• Don’t fix a critical date to complete. This makes you vulnerable to having to make decisions you might not want to. Selling and buying takes time – your lawyer is checking everything possible to avoid you buying something defective. You don’t want to buy something you can’t sell later and you don’t want to be bullied into a completion date just because things have taken longer than you hoped and you’re up against it.

Selling

• Make sure you answer the questions on the property form accurately and honestly. If you leave blanks, the other side will only come back later and ask – late queries are notorious for holding up sales and even leading to them fall through. If you don’t disclose accurately, you can get sued if information later comes to light.

• If you’re selling your second residence then check you’re not subject to capital gains tax.

• At completion, you have to have moved out together with your belongings unless you agreed to leave it as part of the sale. And don’t take anything you agreed to leave!

• If you have to leave the property empty before selling, check your insurance for time limits.

Buying

• Take a long, hard look at your new property. See it at different times of the day and more than once internally. People are unreliable witnesses and often either recall what they’ve seen wrongly, or can’t remember it at all.

• If you’re buying and selling, take care about making an offer to buy before you

have an offer on yours. You might end up being offered less than you thought or be pressured into dropping your sale price to meet the timescale of your eager vendor.

• Don’t assume that everything you’ve seen in the house is in the sale agreement. You might really want those flowery curtains and the seller is happy to leave them, but if it’s not in the sale agreement then it’s not binding.

• Seriously consider getting a full survey. It’s an expense you might not want but it’s the only real way of know exactly the state of the house. Your lawyer can do legal checks for you about boundaries and title, but they won’t know the current state of things like the roof or foundations.

• If there are any defects, don’t exchange until either they’ve been rectified, got an agreement in writing that they will be rectified or been given money off the price to get the work done yourself.

Page 24: BFRS Portsmouth Military Community Careers Event, Sponsored by BAE Systems

• You don’t have to pay the asking price.

• Either party can change the price before exchange. You can pull out any time before that so don’t be pushed into paying more if they hike the price at the last minute.

• You can reduce the price by separating out any fixtures and fittings but they have to be reasonable. HMRC are alive to people trying to avoid the stamp duty thresholds.

• You can’t move in at exchange. Only completion.

• You will need to pay 10% on exchange of contracts. It might be less, but budget for this.

• Get your utilities ready for connection when you move in. Your council tax will also need to be registered to your name.

• Update your driver’s licence, passport, etc - it’s easy to forget these.

• Check meter readings on the day you move in – take a photo – just in case there are any disputes later.

• If you’re buying with someone then understand how the property can be held. ‘Tenants in common’ means that you each hold a share. Joint tenants mean that the asset is held together – the importance here is that if you die, then the property automatically transfers to the joint owner – this overrides what is in your Will. If you want to leave your share to someone else then you need to hold it as tenants in common.

• On that note, check what your Will says. If you’ve only got an mod106 then it’s time to update it. If you’re buying with a spouse then they will have some protection but if you’ve bought with a friend then make sure what happens to you if they die – you don’t want to find that they have left their share to someone else who would force you to sell. All difficult conversations to have, I know, but this is all about hoping for the best, but preparing for the worst.

• If you’ve each put different amounts into the property then you can do a deed of equity. When it comes to selling, there is then no argument about the split of money to each party. This is very useful where friends are buying together and often reassures parents who might be giving their son/daughter a chunk of the deposit.

• If you’re intending the let the property, make sure your lender is ok with that. Many aren’t so you need to get permission. Insurers will be the same.

• Please get good financial advice. The more of a deposit you have, the better rate of interest. We don’t give financial advice but I have a limited number of people I recommend.

There really is so much more to tell you and it’s all based on experience. We find that many military personnel have never been exposed to these sorts of decisions and can find themselves swept along by others.

I hope that this has given you a few things to think about to enable you to challenge appropriately and keep some control.

Nuco TrainingInstructor Profile

At the age of 21, I joined Her Majesty’s Prison Service at a time when the Government were doing mass recruitment of new officers, increasing the number of staff in establishments so that prisoners could have more purposeful activity hours out of cell.

I gained many skills in my 22 year career with the service. I was promoted to

a wing manager, managing the day to day activities of both staff and prisoners.

In my last 4 years of service, because of my passion for exercise and leading a

healthy lifestyle, I became a PE Officer.

Throughout my career I have taught many courses. For many years I taught

the staff how to deal with violent and refractory prisoners, and assisted the national

team in teaching the specialist riot training. I have also taught prisoners sports

qualifications. I get great satisfaction in standing in front of a group and teaching

them new things. It is rewarding to pass knowledge on, and see individuals

succeed in achieving new qualifications.

To aid with my

teaching, I obtained a level

3 teaching award and my

A1 assessors award. I

didn’t just want to be able

to stand out at the front

and teach, I wanted to learn

how to teach in different

ways to maintain interest

within my learners. I then

attained the level 4 CTTL’s

teaching qualification.

“THERE IS LIFE AFTER THE SECURITY OF A LONG CAREER. ALL YOU NEED IS THE DRIVE AND ENTHUSIASM TO GO OUT THERE AND DO IT.”

In 2011 I started my own business MJD Training LTD. I was aware of the

respect that NUCO Training had as the professional provider to Her Majesty’s

Prison Service, so when I decided to teach first aid as part of the business, I signed

up to their first aid instructors course.

NUCO provide excellent support for all their instructors. They are only a phone

call away and will help in any way they can. They have loads of instructor tools

to help you regardless if you are employed or self employed. Within the last year

I have also become one of NUCO’s lead trainers, travelling around the country,

teaching first aid, AED, oxygen therapy, anaphylaxis and also getting learners

through their level 3 qualification in education and training.

Recently I have taken on the role for NUCO as one of their trainers in the level

3 Health and Safety Compliance training course.

There is always something new with NUCO. They have helped me immensely

not only with my own company and development of my business, but also with

the work that I do for them. There is life after the security of a long career. All you

need is the drive, and enthusiasm to go out there and do it. It does not happen

overnight. But with determination and the help from NUCO, for me it has become

a reality.

Well what can I say, apart from where has this year gone? It only seems like a few weeks ago I was travelling around the East Coast promoting the Oakham Career Event which was the first event of 2015 for the BFRS team.

I would hate to think how many miles I travelled during the lead up to that event, however it was not as many as I added up for the Catterick event. Over 2000 miles were travelled to promote Catterick. Whilst out on the ground promoting the events I have found that I still have the squaddie in me, I will sleep pretty much anywhere. I’ve been lucky to stay in some really nice Hotels, some alright B & B’s, some dirty B & B’s and a self-catering Youth Hostel, but one thing they all had in common is that I fell asleep in them.

Travelling the country can at times become very boring especially when you’re alone on the road. The sat-nav in the car becomes your new best friend, and thank god people don’t hear me talking back to it.

Eating out becomes a nightmare, as I end up finding the dirtiest, cheapest chip shops and burger bars. On the plus side, I have been fortunate enough to find some really nice restaurants. One that sticks in my mind, for those that have served in Germany, is the Bread Bowl in Richmond North Yorkshire. Who would have thought of Gyros mit Pommes mit mayo in Yorkshire?!

I’m gradually becoming known as #RobOnTheRoad, but I am not always on the road I am often #RobOnTheRadio. Working with BFBS is something I really enjoy doing, I have had done recorded and live interviews with many of the BFBS team. In fact some followers of #RobOnTheRoad thought I had changed jobs recently, as I seem to spend as much time in a studio as I do in the BFRS office.

My talents don’t stop with the Radio. I have recently become in association with Nuco Training. This has taken off in more ways than one! I travel around with advertising on my car, all my social media has been designed by the Nuco team, and to top it off I have been able to star in a few short promotional videos. These were put together by Pete and Aj from Nuco (you might have seen them about with the camera at some of our events, don’t be shy and get in front of the lens!). Hopefully in the near future I shall be walking around in #RobOnTheRoad fleece jackets and Polo shirts, so keep an eye out for those!

Whilst on the road, I always seem to come across something funny or see something funny (funny to me anyway). I remember whilst posting cards in Brize Norton, I felt a warm, damp feeling on my hand. Trying not to look like I was enjoying it, I allowed it to continue until the dog on the other side of the letter box had finished. Slobber central!

Putting posters up can be an annoying task. I was seen struggling by a young lad

#RobOnTheRoad

Page 35: BFRS Portsmouth Military Community Careers Event, Sponsored by BAE Systems

Portsmouth November 2015 Event | 35www.bfrss.org.uk

in Catterick placing a poster up in a Bus Stop. It was one of those old Bus Stops that is plastered on the inside, and after many unsuccessful attempts of putting this poster up with Blue Tac, I was saved by a seven year old who piped up with “Miss at school rolls blue tac in her hand until its warm, it becomes more sticky”. Having tried this, I successfully placed my poster on the Bus Stop wall and thanked the young lad for his sound advice. We learn something new everyday!

Promoting the Portsmouth Event has had its funny times aswell. I was staying in Gosport so thought I would catch the Foot Passenger Ferry to Portsmouth for a day’s work (#RobOnTheWaves). After visiting the Portsmouth Veterans, HMS Nelson and Portsmouth Council, I decided to walk into the city and place posters and cards in various shops and bars. On arrival in Portsmouth in the morning, I noticed a fine looking Fish and Chip shop which I decided I would have my lunch at. When lunchtime arrived, I started the walk back to the sea front to find it. The walk seemed to be going on for a long time and my legs were in

agreement. I continued to follow the brown tourist signs saying ‘Sea Front’, until after a good 40 mins I reached the sea. The first thing that came into my head was, ‘Where’s the Ferry?’, ‘Where’s the Chippy?’ and most importantly, ‘Where am I?!’.

After a short while, I realised I was roughly about 3 miles from the Ferry and the Chip shop. So in total it took me about an hour to arrive at my destination! Still wandering how I had got it wrong, I noticed a Brown Tourist sign saying ‘Historic Dockyard’. No I wonder how many other people have made that mistake. I’m surely not the first, and definitely will not be the last.

To hear more about my travels around the country, why not follow me on Twitter and Facebook.

Founded in July 2008 after a Falklands pilgrimage, Veterans Outreach Support (VOS) began as an informal volunteer support group based in the Royal Maritime Club, Queen Street, Portsmouth (formerly the Royal Sailors Home Club). The founding members, themselves Falklands veterans and family members, wanted to create an welcoming environment for Service veterans where they could access a range of support services.

VOS was initially set up with individual donations, as well as support from the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity (RNRMC) and the Royal British Legion. Seafarers UK and the RNRMC also provided funding to refurbish rooms in the Royal Maritime Club to provide a permanent office and therapy room.

Significant funding support from the Armed Forces Covenant LIBOR fund in 2013 enabled VOS to become a registered charity, in order to grow its expertise, capability and capacity and deliver weekly therapy sessions. VOS has now secured generous continuation funding from a number of military charities to continue to deliver its invaluable service to veterans and their families for the foreseeable future.

Today the monthly VOS Drop-In provides a welcoming and relaxed place where UK veterans and family members can come for confidential welfare advocacy or psychological support, or simply to meet socially. It is a unique meld of public, private and charity sectors offering one-stop assistance including legal, housing, financial, employment, spiritual, alcohol and mental health support

The VOS point of contact for all enquiry is:

Cure Sometimes, Heal Often, Comfort Always

The attending agencies benefit enormously from VOS, giving them access to clients in a non-threatening environment alongside complementary services. VOS describes their Drop-In as “… a chance for veterans to meet up and get help in all areas from psychological problems to improving their education and managing their finances. The need for social support is the strongest.”

The VOS Drop-In takes place on the first Wednesday of every month, from 1400 to 1800 in the Royal Maritime Club. Former members of all British Armed Forces and Reserves, the Royal Fleet Auxiliary and the Merchant Navy are all welcome.

MICHAEL BIRDS New Story on CTTS and his Transition

I left the forces in February 2015 following a CTTS communications course, I found work with a company based in Burnley called 6G and have recently been promoted to field manager after 7 months with the company.

The course was very thorough, developed skills of specialised subjects and gave a great idea of what to expect on Civilian Street, they provided help with CV writing to make ourselves more attractive.

CTTS also provided a 2 week work placement which was invaluable, when I was on resettlement leave I was putting my CV out there but as I didn’t have any experience it was a real struggle to grab anybody’s attention.

I decided to be a bit cheeky and started emailing companies HR departments directly, that’s when 6G replied and asked for my CV and then invited me in for an interview for the middle of February. I went for the interview and although feeling quite nervous I was confident with what I had been taught by CTTS would be very attractive for any employer.

I got the job, albeit on a junior engineer wage but I didn’t mind as it was a foot in the door which was very much needed, but after 3 months I got promoted to senior engineer ahead of 9 other engineers with much more experience than myself.

I put this down to my determination and drive which I had developed from the army, after that I didn’t sit back on my laurels and recently have just been promoted again to field manager with a company car and much better salary, all in the space of 8 months which I couldn’t have wished for more to be honest.

We’re here to help more people love later life.

There are more people aged over 60 than ever before, and we’re the fastest growing group in society.

As we grow older we face new challenges, and maybe even illness, loneliness or poverty. But that doesn’t stop us being ourselves. We still want to laugh, love and be needed. We want to stay independent and keep doing the things we love. We all want a fulfilling later life.

That’s why we’re here. To support those who need us, stand up and speak for all those who have reached later life, and protect the long-term interests of future generations. We believe that living longer should be celebrated, and everything we do is designed to change the way we age for the better and enable everyone to be part of the solution.

Portsmouth is the UK’s only island city and is proud of its unique identity.

With a proud naval and maritime heritage, towering visitor attractions, great shopping and eating and miles of beautiful waterfront, it’s a great place to live and work.

The city has a rich culture, with popular theatres, live music venues, museums and contemporary art galleries. It has two cathedrals, and events and festivals throughout the year.

The new £35m Mary Rose Museum welcomed its one millionth visitor just 28 months after opening. Other world-famous attractions in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard include HMS Victory and HMS Warrior.

Gunwharf Quays, next to the Dockyard, is home to more than 95 premium retail outlets and a wide choice of waterside restaurants and bars, plus a cinema and the Emirates Spinnaker Tower – the iconic building of the south coast, boasting breathtaking views.

GUNWHARF QUAYS IS COMPLEMENTED BY TRADITIONAL HIGH STREET SHOPPING IN COMMERCIAL ROAD, AS WELL AS THE INDEPENDENT BOUTIQUES AND BEACHFRONT CAFES OF SOUTHSEA.

Portsmouth’s flourishing music scene includes the Victorious Festival, which attracts over 100,000 visitors for a weekend of live music on the common. This summer it included performances from Ray Davies, Primal Scream, Basement Jaxx, The Flaming Lips, Texas and Tinie Tempah.

AS THE BIRTHPLACE OF CHARLES DICKENS AND SHERLOCK HOLMES, THE CITY HAS A RICH LITERARY HERITAGE.

Dickens’s birthplace is now a museum, and the city was chosen by scholar Richard Lancelyn Green as the home for his world-leading collection of books, papers and memorabilia related to Sherlock.

The University of Portsmouth was rated one of the top 10 modern universities in the UK in The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2015.

Sport fans will know Portsmouth has a very strong football culture. Other leisure activities include walking or cycling in the nearby South Downs, or watersports such as sailing, swimming and rowing.

Sir Ben Ainslie, the most successful Olympic sailor of all time, has based his America’s Cup team in Portsmouth, and last summer almost 250,000 spectators saw them sail to victory

in the preliminary Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series, held off Southsea seafront. Portsmouth hosts another World Series event in 2016 and could host the America’s Cup race itself, if Sir Ben wins the cup in 2017.

On the seafront you can take in the views from the battlements of Henry VIII’s castle, or uncover the secrets of the D-Day landings. You can enjoy an ice-cream while looking out across the Solent, Europe’s busiest waterway.

Southsea Common is a vast open space ideal for kite flying, picnics, barbecues and ball games. The Old Portsmouth area is the perfect place for a stroll, with its narrow cobbled streets, historic fortifications, bustling Camber Dock, and traditional pubs and restaurants.

It is also in the top 10 of all universities in the South East region and the top 2% globally.

Portsmouth International Port offers regular sailings to Caen, Cherbourg, Le Havre and St Malo in France; Bilbao and Santander in Spain, and Jersey and Guernsey in the Channel Islands. There are also services to the Isle of Wight and to Gosport.

The city’s own motorway, the M275, sweeps right into the centre. There are also good rail links to London and the wider area.

Portsmouth is the home of many cutting-edge industries, mainly related to the marine, maritime and communication systems sectors. Airbus makes payloads for satellites in Portsmouth. IBM has its UK headquarters here, and BAE Systems has a major presence.

The presence of the Land Rover BAR America’s Cup team has given the local marine and maritime sector a major boost.

The city has been the home of the Royal Navy for 800 years and is now preparing to welcome two huge new aircraft carriers – each three times the size of HMS Ark Royal. The naval base, employing 11,000 people, is receiving massive investment to ensure it can support a greater tonnage of shipping than at any time since the 1950s.

Portsmouth is moving forward. Tourism is up seven per cent. The area is in the top 20 for start-up businesses nationally. Meanwhile, land at the gateway to the city is the focus of a massive regeneration programme, set to bring 3,600 new permanent jobs and 2,370 new homes.

CONSTRUCTION SKILLS COLLEGEAfter completing 13 years service in the RAF Jamie decided to complete a plastering, plumbing and tiling course at Construction Skills College. Since completing the course he is generating work as a self-employed tradesperson.

‘I didn’t have a clue how to do anything before the course but the course and tutors gave me the confidence to go self-employed’.

‘I found the course intensive and enjoyable and what I liked about the college were the training bays, the amount of hands-on practical training and the outstanding knowledge of all the tutors. The tutors offer their support after the course and I have been in touch with them since for advice, which is invaluable’.

The courses are taught by experienced tradespeople and Jamie was taught by a gas safe plumbing and heating engineer with 26+ years experience, an experience tiler who has 20+ years experience and an experienced plasterer who has 40+ years experience. Training is delivered in purpose built training bays and all tools and materials are provided throughout the course.

‘I only completed my training this year and I have already done 3 complete bathroom refurbs, I have plastered 5 houses from top to bottom, and I have completed a number of other plastering, plumbing and tiling jobs. I am now currently working with a property developer doing a full house renovation’.

‘I would definitely recommend Construction Skills College if you are thinking of learning a trade’.

Construction Skills College provide accredited training in Plastering, Plumbing, Tiling, Carpentry, Kitchen Fitting, Bricklaying and Rendering at their dedicated training centre in Staffordshire.

CASE STUDY: JOE ROWLEY Rank and Regiment: Corporal- 1 Royal Anglian

Joe completed just under 8 years in the Military and has started building his own desk at REED.

Name: Joe Rowley Job title: Recruitment Consultant Rank and Regiment: Corporal - 1 Royal Anglian

What did you do in the Military?I joined when I was 16 and served for just under 8 years. I conducted Operational Tours in both Iraq and Afghanistan. I was a section commander within Reconnaissance Platoon when I left the Army.

Since joining REED can you give me a brief overview of your career to date?I joined REED in April 2015 to start up a new branch in Learning & Development. I have completed some excellent training and with the support of my Co-Members and Manager I have started to build a desk.

Why did you choose recruitment after the Military? When I left the Army I was faced with the same choices as many people that leave which was security, personal trainer or some sort of manual labour. I didn’t want to do any of these so I started to see what other opportunities were available. I came across recruitment which matched what I was looking for, as it is target driven, competitive and the people make you feel part of the team from day one.

Why did you choose REED?When I left the Army I worked for a couple of different recruitment companies before REED. None of them offered the training and career development opportunities that REED do, which was one of the key things I was looking for when I left the Army.

What are your main achievements to date?I have only been with REED a short time, I feel that I achieved quite a bit as getting past the selection phase is quite a achievement.

Any advice for service leavers? If you are thinking or have already left the Army then I would seriously suggest a career in recruitment especially with REED as the training and career development they provide is second to none.

Re-train with an Apprenticeship

On leaving the Armed Forces have you considered undertaking an Apprenticeship to re-train for your future career?

They are not just for school leavers and are a way to obtain a recognised qualification while gaining valuable industry work experience. Did you know 90% of Apprentices are hired by the Employer on successful completion or set up their own business - there is no upper age limit to complete an Apprenticeship.

Have you left the Armed Forces and have your own company looking to take on an Apprentice?

Colleges offer a variety of courses and subjects and are able to facilitate the Apprenticeship on your behalf. The Apprenticeship framework consists of

the work placement working 4 days per week in the business (vocational) and the theory (Diploma) attending College one day per week. The duration depends on the subject and level however the minimum duration is 1 year and 1 day.
