This month, we attended a number of events including snack bar shifts, a tree lighting ceremony, WADY, Lincoln Education Center, K-Kids, the Ugly Sweater Dash, CTC, a habitat restoration event, and DCM. Many of us also spent the first Sunday of our winter break together at my house. Our Christmas social was very popular, and members were able to play Just Dance and other Wii games as well as board/card games and eat as much junk food as they wanted. It was especially nice to spend so much time together as a club in the spirit of Christmas!

On Friday, December 6th, 2013, I worked
the 5:30 P.M. to 8 P.M. basketball shift with Cristy Tran, a sophomore in our Key Club. I did not
know her before the shift, so I was nervous that
things would be quiet and awkward during our
shift. I had nothing to do after school so I arrived
thirty minutes before my shift and sat with Jenny at the snack bar until Cristy arrived. We introduced
ourselves and I was happy to see that she was
extremely friendly and nice. We were both talkative
so there weren't any moments of awkward silence.
Of course, we only talked when there weren't any people buying food. At first, we did not sell a lot of
food, but as time went by, we sold more and more.
What surprised me was that so many basketball
players bought snacks right before their games.
Some of them even came more than once and kept on eating. Cristy and I got along very well and I
was very happy that I worked at that shift because
if I did not, I would have one friend less on
Facebook.

Tree Lighting Ceremonyby Thomas Nguyen

On December 7, 2013, I attended the Tree
Lighting Ceremony. It was my second event since
joining Key Club and it was amazing. Upon my
arrival at Mile Square Park, I was greeted by a beautiful tree decorated with Christmas lights and
decorations. After meeting up with a supervisor in
charge, Kevin, Henry, and I went and worked at a
booth where we set up a version of the carnival
game "One Ball" using presents instead of bottles. Watching the kids go at it while playing the game
was pretty funny. One kid came back about five
times to try and knock all the boxes down and he
never asked for a prize. During our shift we were
able to talk to La Quinta's Key Club, because some members were working next to our booth. I
enjoyed this event hope to go again next year.

On December 14th, I was the project chair
for the 2nd shift of the Ugly Sweater Dash. I think
it was the first time this event took place. When I
arrived, there were no venues. I met up with other Bolsa Grande Key Club volunteers from the first
shift. They informed me that they did not have
much to do and just stood at a table with cups of
water for hours. Jen K. Nguyen found the task
coordinator and since this event had an excess number of volunteers with very few jobs, the second
shift was cancelled. However, we did not just go
home. The volunteers helped clean up, dispose
water, and break down tables. All in all, the event
was cut short for the volunteers during the second shift, but we still were able to do some service for
the coordinators. Hopefully the next Ugly Sweater
Dash will be more organized.

On Saturday, December 14th, I attended
WADY once again! It stands for We Aren't Dead
Yet, and although we have this service every month,
December's WADY was especially dear to me. To celebrate the upcoming holiday season, we decided
to make Christmas cards in addition to the usual
food boxes for the elderly. It's not every day that
they get visitors, so we thought that it would be nice
to make the delivery even more special. My group consisted of Jessica Lu, Michelle Tran, Uyen
Nguyen, and Duy Tran. I encouraged my group to
sing Christmas carols before we gave them the
boxes, and they loved it! Most of them smiled the
biggest smiles that I've seen, and they wished us a merry Christmas. It was so heartwarming when we
gave them the handmade cards as well. One card
was really simple; it had an outline of a Christmas
tree with "Happy holidays!" written on the inside.
The grandma who received it loved it so much even though it was so simple. She loved it so much that
she wanted to hang it up. I felt so touched to know
that doing simple deeds could make them happy.
Another grandma gave each of us tangerines, and
other grandparents cheered and clapped after we were done singing from door to door. After the
event was over, I was sad to leave. I felt like I was
needed at the retirement home. Seeing their faces
reminded me of my own grandparents, and I
wanted to help the elders as if they were my own grandparents. Although the December WADY was
the last one of the 2013 year, we aren't done yet.

On Saturday, December 21th, I attended
another DCM, also known as a Division Council
Meeting. It was hosted at Fountain Valley
Recreational Center once again, but this time, it was with Division 4 West and Division 4 East. It wasn't
as organized or warm as I had hoped, but I still met
a lot of nice people! During the DCM, our very own
Tech Editor Jacquelyn Do won Officer of the
Month for the month of November. In my opinion, she definitely deserved it. I always wondered why
she never received it before. Moreover, I was very
proud of my home club for successfully passing the
first round of the spirit session against the other
schools in my division; we mixed one of the division cheers with a Christmas carol. As a service project,
members from three divisions made cards with
construction paper and markers for CHOC hospital
patients and veterans. Our next DCM will be
interesting, for it will be at Conclave in January.

DCM Spirit Battleby Carmie Mach

At the December Division Council Meeting
(DCM), our Key Club battled it out with other clubs
in our division to win the monthly spirit stick that
Tommy handmade and personalized. We made it to the second round, but sadly still lost. However, I
have to say that although we did not win the stick at
the December Division Council Meeting, I am still
very proud of how well we worked together to make
up a cheer on the spot. In the spirit of Christmas, our club did a parody of Jingle-Bells. Instead of
saying Jingle Bells, we said "D4 North" and added
"We want the spirit stick" in the tune of "Don't drop
that thun thun thun." It was so clever! It is probably
the best we have ever made and is actually my favorite so far. Tommy Dang, our Lieutenant
Governor (LTG), liked it so much that he requested
us to do it again so that he could record it.

Our next DCM will be at Conclave in January!
“A Conclave is an event usually run by the current Lt. Governor of the division to elect the next Lt. Governor to represent that division on
the District Board. Each Dues paid club is allowed to have two voting delegates that vote
for the candidate they think will do the best job.“
Source: www.cnhkeyclub.org
The date for Conclave is set to be Saturday, January 25, 2014. Details will be announced
soon. Be sure to attend, especially if you want to be the first to know who our next LTG will be!

On December 28, 2013, I went to the
Santiago Park Nature Reserve to help Back to Natives. We were utterly lost at first, but in the end,
we made it. It was a lot of fun. We got to pull many
different kinds of weeds out from the soil to help
the native plants grow. The heat was formidable, but
luckily, I found some shade now and then. After that, we helped tug the tarp heavily filled with a
bunch of weeds to the main base. Then, we were all
given blue-eyed grasses to plant. We planted them
along the driveway, near the train tracks. We had to
dig a sizable hole, squeeze the plant out of its pot, and put it in the allotted space. Then, we watered
each plant so that it may survive and continue
developing. Afterward, the day was basically over,
and we all stood at the spot where a barn would be
erected in the near future to take a picture. Overall, it was a very fun day, and I am proud that I
participated in this event.

This year’s Christmas social
was at Jacquelyn Do’s house on
December 22, 2013. It was actually
my first Key Club social, so I didn’t
know what to expect. Once a good amount of people arrived, we began
watching “She’s the Man,” then
played Just Dance. We were laughing
together throughout the whole movie.
M o r e o v e r , i t w a s e x t r e m e l y entertaining and funny watching
some people play Just Dance; the
people I enjoyed watching the most
were the male members, mainly
because they danced to “Hit Me Baby One More Time” by Britney Spears. It
was not only my first time at a Key
Club social, but also my first time
participating in a White Elephant
exchange. I was surprised when we were told that we were able to “steal”
others’ presents during the selection;
luckily, I was never a victim. I ended
up receiving the infamous “50 shades
of Grey” novel along with a DVD of the movie “Happy Feet”. I got a good
laugh upon opening the present, but
laughed even harder when I found
out that Dom Nguyen was the one
who purchased the novel and DVD.

On Thursday, December 12th, Bolsa Grande
Key Club had its last general meeting of the year.
Everyone was all dressed up in Christmas
sweaters and Santa hats for our club holiday photo. It was so cute! It took us a while to get
together, but in the end, Henry Diep was able to
take a few snapshots of us.
The following week was scheduled to be our yearbook photo. Many people wore their club
shirts or navy, but in the end, it was cancelled.
Due to the rain, we could not take our picture.
But it's okay because we can still take it another
time.

SAMUEL GARCIA
Presenting... NOVEMBER’S
MEMBER OF THE MONTH
ABOUT HIMName: Samuel Garcia
Age: 14
Birthday: October 5
Grade: Freshman
Why he’s so awesome: Samuel Garcia is one of the newer additions to our club and has shown a tremendous amount of spirit and enthusiasm since. Only a freshmen, Samuel has already been attending events regularly and asking many questions to learn more about Key Club. At Spirit Night, Samuel cheered his heart out for two hours straight in the freezing cold and he was one of the most spirited members there! The day after that, he attended Fall Rally and bought various spirit gear from different clubs as well. He was especially excited about getting otter ears and button pins that represented our division. Samuel has shown hard work, dedication, spirit, inclusiveness, leadership, and enthusiasm within both our club and division. Congratulations on being our Member of the Month, Samuel!

We started this month with a Jamba Juice fundraiser. For five days in a row, two officers could be
seen selling Jamba Juice drinks (for $3 a cup) after school in front of the ASB room. On the second day,
people were also able to see our treasurer, Van Nguyen, in a banana costume! Our fundraiser proved highly successful; we even sold out within half an hour on a couple of days! I even noticed that some club
members would buy a drink each day of the fundraiser. Thanks for all the support, Key Clubbers! The
profit will definitely help improve our club!
“Our fundraiser was an overall success and I couldn't be happier with it!”

“Last Friday, we had our informational meeting about the District Convention that is coming up. I am
especially excited to go this year because it will be my last year. I also have a feeling that I am going to really enjoy the
location because it is all the way in Sacramento. A whole six hours drive away from where I love. I always love
traveling to new places and I can not wait to go this year. I also look forward to District Convention for all of the
opportunities it has. The activities for every single day are especially fun and I am hoping that the Governor's Ball will
be really fun this year. I think I am most excited for the dance but I am also looking forward to going to the workshops.
It would be nice if a lot of people from Bolsa goes as well because it always more fun with a bigger group.”
-Tina Nguyen, Senior Class Director
Interested in attending District Convention? Notify an officer immediately! You can still attend if
you missed the meeting. However, because we need to book hotels and charter buses, we are unable to calculate a total price for DCON. That is why it is crucial that anyone intending on attending must make
a DOWN PAYMENT OF $50 TO THE BOOKSTORE BY THURSDAY, JANUARY 9, 2014. This down
payment will confirm your commitment to attending DCON and allow our lovely treasurer to get a
headcount of attendees and therefore book hotel rooms and buses. Be prepared to pay weekly
installments after we come back from winter break. The total cost of DCON will be around $250-$300. However, any profit we make from fundraisers will be refunded back to you.
Turn to the next page for more information about DCON!
WARNINGWe do not recommend kicking over officers or anybody else
for that matter, especially when they are in a banana suit.

WHAT IS DCON?• • •
District Convention is the end-of-the-year event for Key Club and will be held April 11-April 13, 2014
in Sacramento, the place where Key Club first started in 1925. It is your opportunity to meet thousands
of Key Clubbers from the span of three states, be recognized for your club's achievements, elect the
2014-2015 Executive Board, and dance the night away at the Governor's Ball on Saturday night. Don't
miss out on the most amazing Key Club event of the year!
Break-down of DCON
Day One - Spirit Gear: Everyone will be wearing their divisional/club t-shirt. This day is all about
showing your club spirit. We will cheer our lungs out, explore around.. and then go eat dinner as a club!
There will be a few workshops and general sessions. You will be able to meet many other Cali-Nev-Ha bees as well!
Day Two - Business Formal: You will dress up all professional and business like. There will be a general
session where you and the other key clubbers will meet in a big room to listen to speeches, motivational
speakers, updates, etc. They will give out free breakfast and dinner! We can roam around, go to
workshops, and meet MORE people. It's fun because there will be icebreakers and you can meet so many people outside of the OC and California! Then we change into our dress clothes/ dresses, have dinner
and then at another session, they will be giving out awards to officers and for other reasons like
distinguished club website, t-shirt design, etc. There will also be a talent show where you will get to see
people sing and dance. After that, there's a GOVERNOR'S BALL. Its usually a two hour dance. Our
curfew is 12:00 AM, so we can roam around with our advisor until then. Day Three - Business Casual: Everyone usually wakes up around five or six to get ready and start
packing. We can attend the Walk for Life where we donate five dollars and walk around the convention
with everyone else. Then head back for breakfast and have a closing ceremony. After that, we pack up and
leave.
The on-time registration fee for the convention itself is $178, and the hotel fee is $80 per person with
four people of the same gender sharing a room. We will also be sharing a charter bus with other schools
from our division and the transportation fee will be calculated once we get a confirmed head count of
attendees.
We have been and will continue to fundraise for DCON! However, know that you will also be
responsible for raising your own money. Sell baked goods, offer to do chores for allowance, collect spare
change from the crevices of your couch, anything to get some money! Any money we have fundraised
through the club or division will be refunded back to you.
Be sure to notify an officer if you are interested in attending DCON so we can add you to our DCON interest group and update you with news, deadlines, and meeting dates. Remember that a down
payment of $50 is due January 9th, 2014. Attendees MUST make this down payment.
