Bali lies between the islands of Java to the west, and Lombok to the east. It is fairly small, stretching 80 km from north to south and roughly 145 km from west to east - with a total area of 5,653 square kilometers and population of 3.5 million. It is a province in the Republic of Indonesia with an elected Governor and a local parliamentary assembly. The provincial capital is Denpasar, where most of the government offices are located in the Renon area. There are eight regencies found in Bali: Bangli, Buleleng, Badung, Gianyar, Jembrana, Karangasem, Klungkung and Tabanan.

The major destinations in southern Bali are Kuta, Tuban, Legian, Seminyak, Sanur, Nusa Dua, Jimbaran, and Tanjung-Benoa - and their charm awaits you…

There are a string of stunning volcanoes running from the east to the west of the island - with the still active Mount Agung, having last erupted in 1963, being the largest. Bali’s Mother Temple, Besakih, sits on the slopes of this sacred volcano and is a sprawling complex of shrines and pavilions.

The Balinese have strong spiritual roots and are predominantly Agama Hindu Dharma - a unique blend of Indian Shivaite and Buddhist traditions - with older beliefs and practices originating from the archipelagic world of Indonesia. Each Balinese Hindu must make a pilgrimage to Besakih Temple at least once during

their lifetime. There are thousands of temples all over the island, which represent the meeting point of humans and gods. At temple anniversaries, the gods descend from the mountains to take their seats in the shrines where they will be welcomed with various offerings. Nobody misses an opportunity to worship God in an unending series of ceremonies that extend from birth to death and far beyond.

The climate on the island falls into two categories: the rainy and dry seasons. Dry season is generally from April to October and is marked by southeasterly winds from the Australian interior. The rainy season lasts approximately from November until March, bringing northeasterly winds and sultry conditions. Rainfall varies across the island, from 120

inches on the slopes of sacred Mount Agung to less than 60 inches along the northern coast. Bali’s average annual temperature is 28 degrees Celsius.

The southern coast of Bali is now home to the many expatriates and numerous hotels and boutique hotels. The tourism boom that hit in the 70’s in a small fishing town called Kuta, has now spread, reaching from Nusa Dua up to and including Seminyak, which now has many world-class restaurants, spas, bars and boutiques.

The golden shores of southern Bali stretch to welcome the majority of visitors to the Bali of today, due on part to the international airport being situated in this area. The main infrastuctures have a main 'bypass' road connecting all the major tourist areas running from Nusa Dua through to Seminyak and Sanur, and the brand new "Bali Mandara", Bali's first toll road that creates a new link connecting the airport to Sanur and Nusa Dua area.

puppets, music and rituals. The Indian epics of the Ramayana and Mahabharata provide most of the entertainment, and special ceremonies are held to bless these puppets within the Balinese lunar calendar.

DanceDance holds the utmost importance within the history of Balinese society - ‘Gambuh’ being the oldest known dance drama on Bali - through to the more modern and popular version of this show, the ‘kecak.’

SculptureSculpture has changed little over time with regards to themes and iconography. Originally used to decorate temples and palaces, you can find almost no difference in the design from a sacred cave from centuries ago to what is carved above temple entrances of today. Once again however, the audience has demanded a growing trend for sculpture without religious themes - which the Balinese are aptly able to supply.Bali oozes with artistic talent, as it

is an island steeped in history and tradition.

One of the most exported crafts is Balinese painting - a delightful fusion of traditions of the Hindu-Javanese who came to Bali from East Java in the 14th - 15th centuries, and several western artists living in Bali during the fashionable 1920s & 30s. During those decades, a group of artists known as the Pita Maha Group was formed in Campuhan, Ubud to encourage the arts of the local community, led by Walter Spies and Rudolf Bonnet. Walter Spies’ home still exists today at the Tjampuan Hotel and is open to visitors. There are many different art forms found

across the island. Here follows a brief description of each:

MusicBalinese instrumental ensembles - better known as ‘gamelan’ - are well known throughout the world for their mystical, almost hypnotic sounds. Western Balinese practice music dominated by bamboo sounds, known as ‘jegog’ - whereas bronze gamelan (often seen), known as ‘pande gong,’ are only made by those from a particular ‘Pande’ family.

of the family pray daily. Gestures of prayer, which have become an iconic image associated with Bali, are hands at the level of the brow with fingers pointing upwards - indicating prayer to the Gods and deified ancestors. Hands with fingers pointing down symbolize an invocation to the demons. Between these two positions is human salutation - a brief touch to the heart area - often observed after shaking hands, and considered extremely polite. After prayers are offered, each

worshipper is blessed with a sprinkling of holy water and an application of pressed rice to the forehead.

Offerings can be seen all over Bali, from the largest temples to street side pavements, often outside boutiques - (one should take extra care to step around) - and play a significant role in appeasing the Gods. They are called ‘canang sari’ and made up of food, flowers, money, candy, and even cigarettes! After being placed,

blessed, and covered by an incense stick, they are left to the will of the Gods. The Balinese believe that good spirits live in the mountains and that bad or evil spirits reside in the sea. They believe strongly in magic, and the power of the Gods. The supreme god is being Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa, or the ‘One Supreme Unknowable God’ - although offerings and prayers are not offered directly to this deity but to its many manifestations.

Festivals or ‘odalans’ are celebrations of the Gods returning to the annual commemorations of the founding of their temples. Woman and men adorn their finest, usually colorful, clothes - woman looking stunning as they file with offerings balanced on their heads, and men carrying the beautiful parasols. The worshippers renew their ties with the various Gods, reinforcing bonds together during the preparations and ceremonies of these festivals. Temple festivals vary from temple to temple - and as there happen to be so many, every visitor to Bali has the opportunity to witness at least one. They are specifically marked monthly on the Balinese lunar calendar - which if not available through Balinese friends or staff, can be purchased in most stores.

SCHEDULE OF ART EVENTS AND FESTIVAL

JANUArY 4th, 2015NgerebongOne of the most well known religious ceremonies in the world - worshippers gather at the royal temple in the Kesiman village for a day-long communion between the Hindu gods, nature, and humankind. Starting with rituals to summon Hindu spirits back to earth, the festivities escalate until participants work themselves into a mass trance, stabbing themselves with the “keris” dagger.

MArCh 21st, 2015NyepiA very sacred day on the island, when everything shuts down - an official day of silence, when all roads, airports, stores, and restaurants are closed, and no travel is allowed. Myths to the origins of this holiday vary, some saying it is to trick evil spirits into thinking the island is abandoned so they leave. Yet for others, it is a day of prayer and meditation at home in quiet.

APrIl 11th, 2015Tumpek WayangA special day filled with blessings dedicated towards the traditional performing art form of shadow puppetry. Offerings are made to the equipment and range of character puppets involved in the traditional theatrical art, as the Balinese express their gratitude to Wayang (shadow puppet). It is also chosen as an auspicious day to perform purification rites (ruwatan) both physically and mentally.

NOvEMbEr 28th, 2015Hari raya SaraswatiDevoted to Dewi Saraswati, the Goddess/protector of knowledge, awareness, and literature, as Balinese Hindus hold knowledge and awareness with great reverence as a key aspect of fulfilling human potential. Believing Saraswati's grace to thank for the civilization and culturing of man, respects are paid with gratitude for the prosperity, peace, progress, and enhancement of civilization Saraswati's decent has brought.

OCtObEr 3rd, 2015Tumpek KandangCeremonies are hosted to honor animals as an important part of our world’s ecosystem. Offerings are made, especially to cows, pigs, chickens, and buffalo – and the animals are washed, fed special fodder, and dressed in ceremonial clothes – honored as friends of life, the fellow brothers and sisters who assist in satisfying our needs of food, labour force, religious ceremony, and economy.

dECEMbEr 12th, 2015Tumpek LandepDevoted to the God of Heirlooms, homage is paid to metal tools and weapons, symbolizing asking for a sharper mind. The Balinese believe that the highest level and the greatest weapon of human beings is their mind, and by sharpening the mind as a spiritual purification and elevation, we can face and overcome the enemies and create a better life.

MAY 6th, 2015Hari raya PagerwesiPagerwesi translating to "iron fence," the day symbolizes a powerful protection - focused on building a strong personal fortification, ensuring evil cannot enter our minds, speech and deeds. Knowledge, health, food, cloth and gold are to be held high to keep the universe in balance - the things of value that the “iron fence” must protect inferior influences from destroying.

JUlY 15th, 2015GalunganThe most important religious celebration of the year - Galungan marks the time of year when the spirits of the ancestors descend to earth for a visit, celebrating the commemoration of the victory of “Dharma (virtue) upon Adharma (evil).” Rituals are performed to welcome and entertain the spirits, and to honour the creator of the universe, Ida Sang Hyang Widi.

JUNE 20th, 2015Tumpek PengatagBelieved as a revelation of the Sanghyang Sangkara God as the creator and watcher of all food, plants, and crops, offerings are given as an expression of gratitude for the abundance of food and many roles plants play to assist in human life - a reminder for all to honor, respect, take care of, and live in harmony with nature.

AUgUSt 17th, 2015indonesian independence DayDating back to August 17, 1945, when Indonesia declared its independence from the Netherlands, starting the diplomatic and armed-resistance of the Indonesian National Revolution, until the Netherlands officially acknowledged the country’s independence in 1949. Red and white Indonesian flags line the streets – red representing courage, and white epitomizing purity - as the national pride and spirit of independence is celebrated.

LOCAL CUISINES

Ready to indulge your taste buds with the best of Balinese cuisine? These are three dishes you absolutely must try…

Babi GulingSuckling Pig

Famous by its Indonesian name, Babi Guling, the Balinese suckling pig is a favorite dish of locals and tourists alike. Once only served at ceremonies, this specialty can now be found throughout the island at both local warungs and classier Indonesian restaurants, each pleasing diners with their own unique recipes and expressions. Smothered from both the inside and out with a tasty combination of flavorful local spices, the result is a rich, moist, and tender meat with crackling skin you will remember forever. Many advise to go for this treat earlier in the day, as most restaurants cook the pigs early in the day, and they are usually at their best as soon as freshly opened after the roast.

IKAN BAKAR JIMBARANGrilled Fish

A trip to this island wouldn’t be complete without a proper seafood meal featuring the catch of its sea – and there’s no better way to sample the tastes of Bali’s waters than to dine on some of Jimbaran bay’s mouth-watering Ikan Bakar. Translating clearly as “Grilled Fish,” there are numerous restaurants right on the beach of Jimbaran offering their take on this favorite, lathering up your chosen morning catch right from the bay in a delicious concoction of spices and cooking them to perfection over burning coconut husks. Often served with rice, vegetables, and “sambal” – a homemade blend of chili, shallot, lemongrass, garlic, and oil – some good Ikan Bakar will satisfy your hunger for a true taste of Bali’s best seafood.

AYAM BETUTUBalinese Marinated Chicken

Another timeless Balinese classic, Ayam Betutu is a to-die-for chicken dish you can find all over the island. Stuffed with a fine blend of cooking spices, and often drenched in a succulent broth while cooking, Betutu can take up to 24 hours to prepare – so depending on where you plan on dining, you may possibly need to place your order a day in advance. Also common is a version of the same recipes with duck instead of chicken, “Bebek Betutu” – but no matter which you decide to go for, each warung or restaurant has their own twist on the dish, so you may end up hopping from one to another to experience just how good this famed chicken can get.

With so many sights to see on the island, here are a few natural and timeless wonders to check out…

WATER PALACESWhile Bali may have more temples than you could ever visit in a single (or even dozens) of trips, if you are keen on experiencing something uniquely beautiful, mark down a water palace on your to-visit list… About 5km from Karangasem on the eastern coast, you can find Tirta Gangga – a former royal palace and site of reverence for the Hindu Balinese, whose name means “water from the Ganges.” A maze of pools and fountains surrounded by a lush garden, intricate stone carvings and statues, the grounds are a magnificent display of the artistry and spiritual ambiance of Bali. A far trek from the tourist areas of the south, it is a must-visit if you are venturing up northeast towards Amed, however. There is also a bathing pool where you can cool off from the heat in, or purify yourself in its holy waters. And make sure to bring your camera, as there are many amazing photos to be taken.

TEMPLESOfficial statistics place the number of temples in Bali at over 6000 – not including the small Hindu temple/shrines many Balinese have in their households. Yet to narrow your options down, there are three temples to surely visit while here: Tanah Lot is one of (if not) the most famous and photographed, perched upon a rock in the ocean about half an hour west of Seminyak. Uluwatu is another picturesque wonder, sitting high upon the cliffs on the island’s southern tip. Head here at sunset to see a traditional Kecak Dance as the sun goes down. And Tirta Empul, about 20 minutes north of Ubud, is a famous water temple with holy water fountains, where locals go for purification (and you are welcome to join in).

Known as “The Mother Temple,” Besakih is a magnificent wonder

to experience. Set upon the side of Bali’s largest mountain, Mount Agung,

nearly 1000m up from above sea level. A complex of 23 separate but related temples built on a terraced slope of six levels with breathtaking

scenic views, the place is a marvel of design – the biggest Hindu temple and

one of the holiest sites on the entire island.

Quick Tips

Page 17: BHA 2015

17BALI HOTELS ASSOCIATION

LAKESLake Batur is a magnificent site in northern Bali sitting in the old crater of Mount Batur with an active volcano next to it. Take in gorgeous views from the top at Kintamani, or venture down to soak in some hot springs, which are spread out along the lake. Lake Bratan is the second largest lake in Bali, also in the north. Next to Mount Bratan and Mount Catur in the resort area of Bedugal, the area is perhaps most well-known for the numerous photographs taken at the important Pura Ulun Danu temple guarding the lake. And just northwest, lies Lake Buyan and Lake Tamblingan – which used to be one body of water until they were separated by a landslide near a century ago.

WATERFALLSBali does have some gorgeous waterfalls waiting to be discovered, mostly in the northern regions of the island. While the more adventurous may wish to do some research and go trekking off the beaten path to find some absolute treasures (such as the “Sekumpul” waterfall), the Gitgit waterfall would likely be one of the most famous and easily accessible – a beautiful 35m treasure in the Singaraja district just off the main roadway. Or, go see the Blahmantung waterfall near Pupuan, with a spectacular drop over 100m – though as with most, do be prepared for a trek back up the track. Or if you’re up for a challenge to see some real beauty, dare to make the 509 steps down to the bottom of a gorge to Nungnung Waterfall – 900m above sea level in a small village in the middle of nowhere.

CAVESGoa Gajah – the “Elephant Cave” - is surely the most popular cave in Bali, just to the east of Ubud. Believed to have been carved from a hillside as a monastery in the 11th century, it was rediscovered in 1923. Whether named for its location by the nearby Elephant River or the resemblance of the cave’s entrance to an elephant, many say it’s a must-see.

Goa Lawah (Bat Cave) is found on the southeast coast in Wates Village, between the Klungkung and Karangasem regencies. It is small and unimpressive (and smells distinctly like bats), though is very old and of great significance to the locals.

Goa Maya (Hidden Cave) in Bayad, Gianyar was discovered in the 18th century. Carved out as a space for meditation with its special spiritual power, the cave was later used as a safe haven during the Dutch occupation – and now is a wonder, with a labyrinth of tunnels totaling a length of more than 2000m.

If you happen to make it over to Nusa Penida, you must absolutely put the Goa Karang Sari cave on your list of sights to see. Extending over 200 meters into the hillside, it is quite an amazing place to visit. Many ceremonies are held here, and it is especially a favorite spot for the locals to gather when a torchlight procession is held during the sacred Galungan festival.

The majority of ‘international’ restaurants can be found along the coast from Kuta through to Legian, and the fashionable Seminyak – home to an area fondly referred to as ‘Eat Street,’ where a large amount of dining establishments run side-by-side. Some restaurants comes with al fresco dining setting offering an enjoyable place with great food.

‘Warung’ is the local name for the street side stalls or small restaurants where many Indonesians eat. Common local dishes include ‘nasi goreng’ (fried rice, usually with vegetables, seafood and/or chicken), ‘nasi campur’ (white rice with a mixed selection of various side dishes of meats, vegetables and tofu). ‘Sop buntut’

Bali now has a wide array of restaurants from which to choose, with flavors from all over the globe - as well as many tasty, must-try local dishes

Seafood is also a must, as the daily fresh local catches served in a variety of styles are superb. There are many places to enjoy fresh seafood, especially along Kartika Plaza Street in Kuta, or on the beach at Jimbaran Bay.

Drawing visitors for de-cades, the once calm fishing village has developed into a full-blown mecca for travellers seeking easy access to the island’s surf and legendary hospitality…

SHOPPING IN HUSTLE & BUSTLE OF KUTA

While prices may be set in stone at the malls and retail outlets, many of the smaller locally-run markets and shopping stores will be the place you can get the best prices - or greatly overpay if you accept their first quoted price. Depending on the vendor, you can realistically expect them to accept one third of the initial asking price, if you play the game right. But, always be polite when bargaining - and have fun!

are setup for the day, or ask one of the local surf guys selling Bintangs and they’ll point you in the right direction. The nets might also double for use in badminton games, another favorite of the locals.

Soccer

It may not be the same as on a professional grass field, but will prove to be all the more fun. This is a favorite of many of the locals, and they’re always happy for have others join in the game. So bring your own ball or make some new friends with a game. Time it best at low tide, when the water goes out and the beach’s sand is wetly packed for a flatter playing ‘field’.

Get outdoors and get active! There’s plenty to keep busy with at the beach when the sun is shining, and no better way to enjoy your holiday with family or friends than keeping in motion with some fun outdoor sports. Here are some

of the most famous and common…

running

One of the best all-time ways to keep in shape, running is one sport very popular at the beach. Go with your running shoes or barefoot – the soft sand makes your jog even easier on the knees, and if you overheat, it’s quick and fun to dip into the water to cool off. Race your friends or take some quality time with yourself – there’s no better setting for a run than the beach.

racquet

Part tennis, part badminton, part ping pong… Subtract the net and add in some sand, and you’ve got one of the most trendy new sports around. This fun pastime with friends makes for a great time on the beach as well as a wonderful way to get some exercise in. Bring your own, or ask some of the locals who can be found renting surfboards – there are plenty of sets available to rent up & down the beach at a very affordable price.

While Bali is famous for some of the best waves & breaks in the world, Kuta’s conditions are the island’s best for those just starting out. Head to the beach, and there’s no shortage of boards for rent and friendly locals offering lessons. South Kuta Beach, also known as Tuban, Stretches from the Ngurah Rai International Airport all the way to the end of Kartika Plaza Main Street. Once a

small area just a shadow of the reputable Kuta Beach,

South Kuta Beach rapidly grows as another prime location. There are many hotels found on the main street, which now also has one of the biggest and most complex malls in southern Bali, Discovery Mall, and the newcomer Lippo Mall Kuta which will be a new alternative for shopping-in-style experience in this area.

Many family-friendly restaurants can be found on this vibrant strip of road, including an excellent variety of well-known international fast-food brands. Bubba Gump is a popular eatery for family members of all ages, as are the numerous sports bars and restaurants showing various live sports coverage on large screens - often simultaneously - where children are welcome. On special event days of the year, such as Melbourne Cup or sports finals, there may even be themed parties or events being held.

Many of the hotels along the beach-side stretch of South Kuta - from the quieter Ma Jolie, all the way up to and including Kuta Paradiso Hotel - have lovely beachfront bars and restaurants, which are a great place to watch life go by or catch the

legendary sunsets over a Bintang (the local Pilsner beer) or two. Entertainment choices in this area are also on your fingertips with the award-winning Waterbom Water Park & Spa as the main attraction. For the whole family, the water park is a great venue for a perfect day out. Another challenging yet fun activity is Flying Trapeze at High Flyer Bali Trapeze School where kids can learn to fly. Of course it’s a safe and controlled environment! Some hotels also have kids clubs that give mom and dad a break from the younger members of the family, within safe surroundings looked after by the kind Indonesian staff, especially gifted at looking after children. Don’t be surprised if when you’re out, staff lovingly carries your children off – it is all in a very kind way and from a genuine fondness for children.

Many of these hotels also offer a list of sports and beach activities, such as bowling and billiards - some complimentary and some with a small rate applied – and a few providing gyms and tennis courts. For your leisure and relaxation time, All hotels have world-class spas with amazing menus of treatments, starting from 30 minutes to full-day packages if so desired, at rates that are hardly believable.Taxi is the popular transportation which can be easily found. Please make sure that the taxi driver turns on the meter, or you probably will pay higher than normal rate. Also, beware of traffic jam that tends to happen on weekends. LEGIAN AREAFollowing the beach north from Kuta, you will find Legian - which although busy, is a lot less so than

Kuta, due partly to a one-way road system easing traffic congestion.

A little more sophisticated than Kuta, the pace is slower - although there is everything the visitor could wish for: shops galore, restaurants, night clubs, bars, boutique hotels, hotels, spas, as well as villas and private homes. Legian becomes a little more residential, with many expatriates also living in the area.

When the night comes, Jalan Legian transforms itself to a party ground as nightclubs open their doors. Good vibes, loud music and live performance, this is the where-to-go for partygoers, mostly the younger generation.

In the middle of Jalan Legian, there is a memorial site to commemorate the Bali bomb blast tragedy - happened in 2002, The Ground Zero Monument. People often visit the monument, place a buck of flower, and pray for the victims, their family or friends.

There is no shortage of upbeat bars and clubs in this area. Offering cheap drinks and a great atmosphere to party, these places are busy with visitors every night until late, whether it’s a weekday or the weekends. On special days like Halloween Day, bars usually hold costume festivals. Prepare your camera, and be ready to capture who’s wearing the best costume!

The Blue Ocean area is popular with locals, expatriates and visitors alike - and many of the bars and restaurants found along this stretch of the beach are foreign owned, but locally run. Due in part to this fusion, there is a great choice of culinary diversions from which to choose - allowing you to travel the world over by plate, all while gazing at an amazing sunset. Beachside, surfing is popular - with surf schools to help those in need - as well as volleyball, Frisbee and racquetball. For a slower pace, many people choose to walk the length of the perfect flat sand shore, uninterrupted for kilometers in either direction.

The beach in Seminyak is much more peaceful than Kuta or Legian, and many of the top-end and boutique hotels are found in this area - as well as some amazing private expatriate homes. It is for this very reason that it has the most expensive real estate of the island - now with very little land left to develop.

This is the place to relax and chill, but with a higher budget in mind. There is virtually no backpacker accommodation in this area. World-class boutiques, restaurants, bars and clubs make this a place to be seen - and when night falls, it is Jalan Laksmana, also known as Eat Street, that

attracts the crowds looking for varied cuisine. The bars are more sophisticated – with the legendary beachfront Ku De Ta (also a fabulous spot for brunch), Hu’u Bar, Mantra, MINT, and Potato Head for the expatriates on weekends – and the recently opened Townhouse making its mark with stage-stopping shows featuring international DJ’s and acts.

There are many restaurants all around, with the Australian style bistros definitely gaining in popularity during the day - where expatriates and visitors in-the-know hang out, drink European style coffees, and log on. Of these, are notably

Grocer And Grind and Petitenget – which can be packed during breakfast through to, and after, lunch time.

The more scenic, but pricier, places right on the beachfront are Ku De Ta, La Luciola, Potato Head, and W Resort (whose Sunday brunches in Starfish Bloo are now booked up to a month in advance). Whatever you may choose to eat, Seminyak is in-the-most-part family-friendly and has it all - from Thai to Turkish, from Mexican to of course Indonesian… be inspired!

Boutiques are numerous and fabulous, with expatriate designers housing their brands and creations all along the main streets of this area: Magali Pascal, Lily

Jean, Miss Milne, Paul Ropp, Nico Perez, and Vivacqua are but just a few of too many to mention. You will get incredible bargains and prices compared to outside of the country, with your Rupiah going a long way. Be prepared to buy jewelry, shoes, belts, and bags – mens’ and women’s, as well as children’s designs. And, there are often stalls set up in the Seminyak Square shopping center parking lot offering handcrafts and cottage-industry goods – perfect gifts to take back home with you.

Bali has literally hundreds of spas - an industry that has rapidly risen in the

last 10 years due to the natural herbs and perfumes found indigenously to

the archipelago, as well as a tribute to the warm hospitality and talent of the

Balinese masseuses. it is one thing you must do before leaving.

Spas are a big part of tourism on the island today, and Seminyak has many on offer. The Indonesians have many rituals which have been adapted to what tourists call ‘spas’, that originally came from certain practices - one, for example: the preparation of bride and groom for their wedding night through scrub, massage and fragrant bathing. A ‘boreh’ - a type of body scrub - was initially used to scrub and warm the body and rid it of toxins after a hard day’s work in the paddy fields. As Indonesia has so many herbs, flowers and spices, many of the natural ingredients used in spas have been passed down through generations for their genuine therapeutic properties. It is a quieter option away from the busier Kuta – Tuban – Legian streets, and can easily be accessed on foot. With many fabulous boutiques offering designer duds at reasonable prices, this area along the Jalan Petitenget road starting at the bend just after Hu’u Bar, makes for a fun day indulging in retail therapy.

With a number of notable restaurants for drink and snack stop-offs – and maybe finishing the afternoon off with a quick reflexology to soothe those tired feet at any one of a number of spas - your perfect day is made. At the Semara Resort’s Kid’s Cubby House, your children can be professionally entertained for hours if you wish to have some ‘me’ time – perhaps even concluding the day with a cocktail or two at popular Potato Head as the sun sets. For an elegant dinner, Metis Restaurant at Petitenget Street is a fine chioce in this area.

The evening comes alive, as the numerous up-market hotels and boutique hotels of this area are popular year-round, with a huge choice of what and where to eat - and many after-hour bars and clubs to follow on to, adding a little more sophistication to complete the whole experience.

The Petitenget / Kerobokan area, extending from Seminyak, has in recent years expanded on what Seminyak already had to offer - broadening the scope and range of choice even further.

As more tourists come to Bali, the south’s development has extended further & further up the coastline, with Canggu becoming the latest hot spot for seekers of good times, good waves, and good vibes. Well-known for its great surfing beaches, the atmosphere in the area reflects the surfer mentality – pleasantly laid back and relaxed, yet with a healthy touch of hip and happening. Echo Beach – and the close by Batu Balong beach – hold a special place in the hearts of many, providing enough space & quiet to really enjoy your vacation, but enough liveliness to keep engaged with a great community of travelers, locals, and cool expats.

There are still a number of great hotels choose from out this way, though you’re really more entering villa territory now – a true pleasure of an experience you likely won’t find in Kuta. Book yourself at least a couple nights, as it’s extra easy to settle in and never want to leave!

Tearing yourself away from your sanctuary, you’ll discover a great selection of laid-back restaurants and cafes to satisfy your hungers at – a number of which seem to focus on organic and healthier choices. This isn’t the place to party all night long, but you’ll have no problems finding good company around sunset time as the places along the beach fill up with happy, smiling groups of friendly people sharing in on some of the nicest environments the island has to offer.

Popular with surfers, yet far more relaxed than Seminyak, and further off the beaten path than the crowded Kuta, Echo Beach is gaining in popularity as

more people discover all it has to offer visitors…

GOLF TIL YOU'RE DROP

A decade ago, playing golf was a premium and high-class sport played by top management persons only. Nowadays, golfing continues to get more and more popular, welcoming newbies and weekender tourists who are curious to try this sport. FINE DININGAs expected from a high-end tourist destination area, Nusa Dua is home to some of the best fine dining restaurants on the island – offering visitors to Bali good opportunities to experience food of the finest taste served with first-class services, in a perfect atmosphere of truly Balinese ambiance: complete with breath-taking ocean views, Balinese classic interior, and elegant interior settings.

Most of the fantastic fine dining restaurants are hosted by five-star resorts that are lined along Jalan Pratama, Tanjung Benoa, inside the ITDC complex, and carry on all the way up to cliff resorts located on Bali’s southernmost tip. The selections of cuisines are deliciously abundant. With more than 100 resorts and fine independent dining establishments in this area, it is easy to find a restaurant with specialties ranging from Royal Balinese, Asian, Western, Japanese, to French cuisine. All creations are prepared by executive chefs with international backgrounds, so you can always expect a truly memorable night out dining in Nusa Dua.

While most of hotels in Bali now feature MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) facilities, Nusa Dua is the top district catering to these business needs, especially for medium to large corporate events, from national to international scales. The new infrastructure support, Bali’s first over-the-sea toll road, “Bali Mandara,” provides “red carpet” access for both VIP guests from Ngurah Rai International Airport and government officers from Denpasar - making this area a strategic point for any meeting.

Bali Nusa Dua Convention Center (BNDCC) and Bali International Convention Center (BICC) are two premier meeting venues to accommodate large global meetings. These venues are located inside the well-managed tourism complex, Indonesia Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC), where more than 4000 available rooms of five star hotels & resorts, cafés, restaurants, entertainment, recreation, and white sandy beach are just within reach. Also offering various choices of meeting rooms (convention hall, ballroom, auditorium), BNDCC and BICC can cater any style of events, from theatre, classroom, U-shape, round table, to standing cocktail style. In 2013, both venues supported each other to successfully host two world-class events: The 63rd Miss World 2013 and the 21st APEC CEO Summit Indonesia 2013.

In addition to the two premier meeting venues, most of the five-star hotels and resorts also provide small to medium scale meeting venues for their guest. Some also offer outdoor spaces suitable for more casual events like wedding parties, family gatherings, and cocktail nights.

SECRET BEACHES

Padang-Padang BeachLocated at Jalan Labuhan Said, Uluwatu, the beautiful view of Padang-Padang Beach can be seen from the bridge on the main road. To access the beach, visitor must pass through a small Balinese temple complex then go down through stairs between a small cave formed by limestone. Padang-Padang Beach has become more popular after the fame of the movie Eat, Pray, Love starring Julia

Roberts, which used this beach as one of its filming spots. The waves are also challenging, with surfing competitions often held here.

Pandawa BeachLocated at the village of Kutuh, Pandawa Beach is a “happening” beach in the Nusa Dua area, after the government realized the potential of this beach and decided to build a better access road – now even

a bus can park at the side of the beach. As you approach the beach, natural high cliff walls at both sides of the road greet visitors and set the mood. And when the panoramic views of the beach from the top appear, you will be amazed. There are also several huge and giant statues placed in the man-made caves on the cliff, providing a great background for photos.

Not really a surfing beach, Pandawa Beach is a perfect spot for a lazy Sunday and entertaining activities like canoeing and beach volleyball.

Blue Point BeachOriginally named Suluban Beach, this beach features stunning natural cliffs and caves, without much white sandy area. However, it is a great place for photo shoots, surfing, and sunset watching. The big waves here are world-class and recommended for experienced surfers only. And for non-surfers, it is best to come here around 4pm, sit on top at the cliff cafés, grab a cold beer, and witness the sun descend gracefully into the Indian Ocean.

A few years ago, the beaches on the southernmost tip of Bali were still unpopular due to its difficult access with deep stairs going down to beach area. But, thanks to experienced surfers seeking challenging waves and

The beach here stretches for about 4 km and was recently given a makeover to now include a promenade with thoughtfully-dotted pavilions out to sea, making it a very pleasant area to cycle, stroll, or take the baby out by pram.

There are plenty of hotels spread along the shores, interspersed by private homes owned by both locals and expatriates. Of

these, one has been made into a museum - that of expatriate painter, Adrien Le Mayeur (1880-1958), who settled in the 1930s and married a beautiful Balinese dancer. The Tanjung Sari Boutique Hotel is family-owned and run and has had some famous faces stay over the near 50 years it’s been running - including author Anais Nin and the then-young Rolling Stones - and is a lovely place to have lunch.

Sea sports are extremely popular on this side of the island, and visitors can choose from a vast array: diving, snorkeling, parasailing, surfing, canoeing, windsurfing, water skiing and wake boarding, to name but a few. Most of the major hotels can cater to all tastes - or

there are many independently run outlets willing to rent at reasonable prices.

Some tour outlets that provide boat transport to neighbouring islands, such as Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida, can be easily found near Sanur Beach. The boat usually sails in the morning, approximately takes 30 minutes to Nusa Lembongan. There are also some cruise service offering day cruise trip packed with interesting activities.

The nightlife in Sanur cannot compete with that of the south - but nonetheless, there are many decent bars and restaurants to suit most budgets, and the locals and expatriates who run these

establishments are always welcoming and friendly.

Sanur is reasonably peaceful and although rather spread out to get around by foot, perfect for a bicycle touring. Watch out for the annual Sanur Festival, when days of activities keep the whole family entertained.

dENPASAr & gOvErMENt OFFICESThe capital and most populous city of Bali, Denpasar is an entirely different world than the picture-perfect beach resorts of the tourist areas. It is here, you can get an experience of the true local life. Coming from the Balinese words "den", meaning north, and "pasar", meaning market - the city's origins began as a market-town, on the site of the now Kumbasari Market.

Prepare for traffic as you navigate through the city to explore streets full of shops, restaurants, and side streets of family compound homes. If interested to see the more commercial side of the city, go to Jalan Teuku Umar, where you can find a wide selection of restaurant,

electronics stores, and more surprises. Or to learn a bit more about Balinese art and history, go to the Bali Museum.

Most of the government offices can be found in the Renon area of Denpasar, where the majority of official government business has been conducted since it became the seat of government for the province of Bali in 1968, and has remained the administrative centre of both the Badung Regency and City of Denpasar. And while it may be difficult to find parks in Bali, there are a number of nice, green parks around the area, including Puputan Park, along the northern edge of which you will find the provincial governor’s office and other government buildings.

While it’d be all too easy to settle in at the resort or stay put at the beach all day, there is also a lot to see and do around Sanur. Venture out a bit, and you

will find some places to make your Bali experience more interesting & colorful…

AROUND SANURMAtAhArI tErbIt bEACh

This beautiful, long white sand beach in Sanur has breathtaking views to the Indian Ocean and neighboring Nusa Penida, and is quite popular with domestic tourists. The waters here are pretty much always calm, so it’s a great beach for swimming and relaxing. Surfers may also love the waves here too - though instead of paddling out, you will need to take a boat trip out to the reef to catch the breaks. If you want to stay at a beachfront accommodation, there are a few hotels right on the beach – as well as several within a short stroll. There are plenty of restaurants to be found at a few of its strips, so it’s also a great location for a nice lunch or romantic dinner. And if you’re staying in the area, set your alarm clock super early and head here to catch the sunrise – the beach is notorious for its picturesque morning scenery as the sun comes up. blACK SANdS KEtEwEl

Everyone always raves about white sand beaches – yet on Bali’s east coast, lies a contrasting wonder that must be seen for oneself. The sands of the beach at Ketewel have been colored a rich black by the volcanic ashes from the erupting Mount Agung a very long time ago, and to this day remain enchantingly dark. There are also a few other beaches close by which feature the black sands, though Ketewel is probably the most well-known and easily-accessible. It’s also a great beach for surfers wanting a quieter escape from the busy beaches of the south - the neighboring Keramas beach has become especially popular recently with the surf crowd, even become home to a new cool beach club. Yet even if you’re not going to surf, it’s worth the trip for the amazing sight and getaway alone.Remember to bring your sandals, as the sand can get very hot on a sunny, strong mid-day.

The cooler climate of Ubud provides a breath of unpolluted air - almost as its name dictates, as ‘Ubud’ comes from the Balinese word for medicine. This area of Bali claims stake as the cultural and artistic soul of the island - and it is true that many artists of all backgrounds, both local and expatriate, reside here. As such, there are many museums to visit in the region.

Ubud is a pleasant town - no longer a village centering on the Ubud Palace along the main road, which meets Monkey Forest Road. It has hotels and ‘kos’’ for all budgets and types of traveler, with some of the hotels on seemingly busier streets opening out onto amazing views across ravines and forests. Ubud’s surrounding countryside is mesmerizing, and one can well understand why it is the obvious inspiration for the many artists living there. In addition to its artistic atmosphere, Ubud is also the great place for adventurous activities. Biking or jogging at Campuhan Hill is a simple way

Ubud does have its own nightlife, although it shuts down considerably earlier than its southern counterpart. With several notable restaurants, live music bars, and one club named Ozigo - one surely can stay entertained late into the night if so desired.

Up into the hills of Ubud, shopping leads from along the main Palace road onto parallel sides of Monkey Forest Road, running past the football pitch. Ubud has an eclectic choice of shopping with art, antiques, paintings, sculptures and textiles being amongst the popular choices. There are several art galleries from which to purchase, as well as photography studios (such as that of the renowned Rio Helmi). Ubud is THE place to purchase art. The traditional market found on the main street is vibrant and must be visited at least once, if for nothing more than the ambience and experience of an engaging haggling for a purchase. The traditional market in Denpasar is also worth a visit, with food stock & flowers on the ground floor and spreading outside, to clothing and more starting from the first floor up. There are some excellent jewelers on the top floor, crafting treasures right before your eyes.

The Ayung River, running north to south, makes for an excellent adventure playground, with several tour companies offering guided journeys down. It’s a great way to enjoy spectacular views of the valley, and the rafting here is great for beginners or those fearful of intense rapids, as the river is low and tame, so provides for a more relaxing trip down (though still has its moments that will get your blood pumping).

And if you’re in the mood for a pampering, you’ll be amazed at the array of spas designed in harmony with the natural surroundings. Recharging has never been easier, as the spas offer great treatments in amazing environments that will nourish your body, mind, and spirit.

bIKINgGrab a bike and get pedaling – there’s no way to see the beauty of Ubud’s outdoors like on bike! With wide open views to all sides and the fresh air kissing your face, bicycling through the rice fields and valleys makes for a spectacular experience you won’t forget. Many hotels rent bikes that you can take off with on your own to explore, or join in for a tour with one of the many adventure agencies around.

There may be no beach around, but there’s still plenty to do here in the jungle. Whether you’re a thrill-seeker or interested in something a bit more tame, be sure to get out and take in some of the best and most fun ways of truly

NUSA lEMbONgANA small island off Bali’s southeast coast, Lembongan is becoming a popular attraction as a paradise getaway. Very small, at only 8km square in size, there are virtually no cars here – so to get around, you’ll either have to rent a motorbike or bicycle, catch a ride in a truck, or best yet, explore on foot. A fine place to put your feet up and relax, there are plenty of gorgeous white sand beaches with decently-priced accommodation and cozy restaurants serving delicious island-fresh food. Snorkelers, divers, and surfers will be well-pleased, as there’s plenty great marine life to explore and great waves to surf in the surrounding sea. Several speedboats depart to the island daily from Sanur and Benoa Harbour, so if you want to take a trip over, it is quick and easy to do.

However, the beauty of the island is remarkable. There is great trekking and mountain biking with amazing coastal views, or if you’d prefer to get in the water, the island is best known as a world-class diving destination. Whether diving or not, you’ll want to check out the gorgeous Crystal Bay with its stunning white sand beach. Birdwatchers will also love the island, as it has been designated an island-wide bird sanctuary with many endangered species to spot. Speedboats can take you there from Padang Bay, Benoa Harbour, Sanur, or Lembongan – or for a budget option, you can buy a passenger ticket on the public ferry from Padang Bay for around $3.
