More baccalaureate prepared nurses are needed to meet growing healthcare demands. A

surge in the number of second degree accelerated nursing programs has contributed bacca-

laureate prepared nursing graduates to the workforce. Despite the increasing number of

accelerated graduates, literature to date has little to say about how accelerated graduates

adapt to the healthcare work environment when compared to their traditional graduate

counterparts. First year turnover of nursing graduates is astoundingly high, estimated at

greater than 30%. Nurse retention literature finds leading factors for nurse turnover sur-

round job dissatisfaction with work environment characteristics. This study compared ac-

celerated and traditional nursing students perceptions of their future work environment.

The quantitative survey design sampled 86 nursing students ready to graduate from either

a traditional baccalaureate nursing program or an accelerated second-degree program at

the same university. The Work Environment Scale (WES) Expectations Form developed

by Moos (2008) was the survey instrument used to compare future work environment ex-

pectations the findings indicate accelerated students expect more autonomy and peer co-

hesion in their future work environments than traditional students. The study also indi-

cates students have higher expectations of their future work environment that health care

work group (HCWG) norms show to be real. Organizations can investigate these factors

and pursue targeted strategies to prepare for new graduate expectations.
