Coronavirus Update The news that no one wanted to hear but expected was announced this morning – Victoria will enter Stage 4 Restrictions as of midnight tonight.  Our primary school will therefore engage in remote learning, starting tomorrow while our kinder will remain open.  It goes without saying how difficult this period of time is for many reasons and as I reflect on our previous experiences, it gives me confidence knowing how supportive and connected the community of Box Hill North is.  Teachers will send home resources for students this afternoon and be in communication about remote learning access.  Together we will get through this and with luck, will return next Friday.  Updates will be communicated via Compass, Story Park and We Chat.
National Sorry Day May 26 is recognised as National Sorry Day with respect to our indigenous peoples and steps towards healing for the Stolen Generations, their families and communities.  Each week, our student leaders open assembly with acknowledgement to country, paying their respect to the traditional custodians of the land and elders, past, present and emerging.  National Sorry Day is an opportunity to reflect on the mistreatment of the countries indigenous peoples as part of an ongoing process of reconciliation.
Communications Today you will have received a Compass notification of planned events for next week.  This will go out each Thursday morning to help everyone keep up to date with what’s going on at Box Hill North.  At the end of each term, we will send out a calendar of term ahead.  At times, things will change but we plan to have our key events mapped out to assist with everyone’s organisation.    Pride and Passion I was incredibly proud of the cross country team and their approach to taking on the challenge at Ruffey Lake Park.  Notorious for its hill, the conditions proved difficult with all participants having to overcome a headwind at the start line.  The thing that really stood out was the genuine interest and care that our students placed in each other; cheering and encouraging their peers while showing gratitude and grace towards their competitors.  Congratulations to all of our students who competed and to those who were successful in gaining entry to the next level of competition.  A special mention to Charlie and Max, both winning their age groups.   Extending Learning Our tutoring program as part of the government’s response to support schools from last years remote learning experience will commence in a couple of weeks.  We are very excited to announce that Mei-Mei will be our tutor, working closely with 35 students across the school.  Mie-Mie has been teaching in the prep class with Lauren and Mark for the past eight weeks and has impressed with her approach to teaching and learning, together with her adept ability to build strong and purposeful relationships with her students.  Families of students selected for the tutoring program will be notified and invited to a briefing to maximise the opportunity and the home/school partnership.    Our teaching staff continue to offer many forms of intervention through their carefully designed teaching and learning programs, tailored to the point of need for every student.  Programs such as Born to Soar complement our approach, offering a unique approach to extending the mind.  There are limited places available and you are encouraged to speak with Angus from Born to Soar for further information.    Chess Club We are currently investigating options to introduce chess club at Box Hill North.  Keep an eye out for more details.
