Progression of revelation to Daniel, ch 7 onwards.

This table is my attempt at exploring how far the revelation God gave to Daniel about future events was progressive, i.e. how far later visions devel-oped and filled out what he had received earlier. I leave reader to draw their own conclusions! The dates in the header are the likely dates that the prophecies in that chapter were received by Daniel. It may help to explain how Daniel’s understanding of what was revealed to him developed over time (see the note on 8.27, “it was beyond understanding”).Green type (3rd down) indicates that the prophecy was fulfilled under Antiochus Epiphanes, 168-164 BCBlue type (3rd down) indicates that the prophecy was fulfilled in the Roman sack of Jerusalem and temple in 70 ADRed type indicates that the prophecy’s fulfilment awaits the end of this age.

Where the type is mixed, this indicates an initial fulfilment, followed by a later, final fulfilment.

Dan 7 (553 BC) Dan 8 (551 BC) Dan 9.24-27 (539/8 BC) Dan 11-12 (536 BC) Other prophecies

“What will happen in the last of the days” (2.28), and“what (is) to be after this . . what (is) to be” (2.29), and“what (is) to be after this” (2.45). I.e. the future continuing on till the end?

"what will happen at the last of the wrath, for the vision concerns the appointed time of the end” (8.19)

“what will happen in the last of the days” (10.14), i.e. the fu-ture continuing on till the end?

"The last days” in the NT are depicted starting with the first coming of Christ and continu-ing until his return (e.g. in Acts 2.17; Heb 1.2; 1 Jn 2.18 and probably 1 T 4.1; 2 T 3.1; but see 2 P 3.3). But similar ex-pressions are used to mean the end of the age when Christ returns (see e.g. 1 P 1.5; 4.7; Mt 13.39f, 49; 24.3).

Dan 7 (553 BC) Dan 8 (551 BC) Dan 9.24-27 (539/8 BC) Dan 11-12 (536 BC) Other prophecies

The end of the age is de-scribed in the replacement of the world’s kingdoms by the kingdom of God (7.14, 18, 22, 26f; see 2.34f, 44f).

The vision “concerns the time of the end” (8.17).“what will happen at the last of the wrath, because the vision concerns the appointed time of the end” (8.19).He is told to, “shut up the vi-sion, for it is concerning many days” (8.26, literal translation) - probably meaning the distant future though not necessarily the time of the end.

“war will continue until the end” (9.26)

[See Table line . . for the final ‘week’ of Dan 9.27]

“for the vision concerns a time yet to come (lit. yet vision for/concerning the days)” (10.14)“an end will still come at the appointed time” (11.27)“until the time of the end, for it will still come at the appointed time” (11.35)“At the time of the end . .” (11.40)“At that time . . At that time . .”(12.1)“until the time of the end” (12.4, 9))“How long shall it be till the end of these wonders?” (12.6, ESV) . . “It will be for a time, times and half a time . . all these things will be completed” (12.7) [See Table line . . ]“what will be the last of these things?” (12.8)“till the end . . at the end of the days” (12.13)

The people of Israel are in ex-ile currently, but there is a fu-ture for “the saints of the Most High” at the end of the age (7.18, 22, 27)

Daniel is given details of the people in their land and with a functioning temple (8.10-13, 24f), but is told that it “con-cerns the time of the end” (8.17, 19, 26)

The seventy ‘weeks’ prophecy concerns the rebuilding of Jerusalem (9.25) and the peo-ple back in their land with a functioning temple. The sev-enty ‘weeks’ will bring in “ever-lasting righteousness” (v 24), so must extend until the time of the end.

[By 536 BC when Daniel re-ceived this vision, the first party of returning exiles would be back in their land.] The pre-dictive account of the kings of the north and south concerns the land of Israel, the people and the temple (see 11.14, 16, 28-35). The account concludes with “the time of the end” (11.40 to 12.12) with a focus on the people and their land.

The terrifying 4th beast, that crushed & devoured & tram-pled underfoot the whole earth (7.7, 19, 23; see 2.33, 43). Points to the Roman em-pire.

[For prophecies in Daniel and eleswhere about war and de-struction in Israel, Jerusalem and the temple, see lines ].

The goat trampled on the ram (8.7). The little horn that came out of one of the 4 horns trampled on some of the starry host (8.10); “the host that will be trampled underfoot” (8.13)

“The people of the ruler who will come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. The end will come like a flood; war will continue until the end, and desolations . .” (9.26; see also v 27). [“the people” are the Ro-mans, who destroyed Jerusalem in 70 AD]

The 10 horns of the 4th beast, 3 of which are uprooted (7.7f, 20,24; see the toes, 2.41ff

Rev 12.3; 13.1, the dragon - Satan, who empowers the beast - has 10 horns, as does the first beast (13.1). The sig-nificance of the beast’s 10 horns is described in Rev 17.12, in similar terms to Dan 7.24.

A little horn came up among the 10 horns of the 4th beast

A horn which started small came out of one of the 4 horns

woman’s offspring (Rev 12.17); the 1st beast will over-power and kill the two wit-nesses (11.7) and will make war against and conquer the saints world-wide(13.7).

See also Rev 12.4 below.

The saints will be handed over to him for “a time, times and half a time” (7.25, probably symbolic for 3 1/2 years).

In answer to, “How long?” The “surrender of the sanctuary and of the host” will be for 2,300 evenings and mornings (8.14, probably meaning 1,150 days, i.e. 3.2 years if lunar years are used, but a period of slightly over 6 years if under-stood as 2,300 days). Re-ferred to again at 8.26.

“In the middle of the [last] ‘seven’, he will put an end to sacrifice and offering . . until the end that is decreed is poured out on him” (9.27)

When the power of the holy people has been fi-nally broken, all these things will be completed” (12.7). “From the time that the daily sacrifice is abolished and the abomination that causes deso-lation is set up, there will be 1,290 days. Blessed is the one who reaches the end of the 1,335 days” (12.11f)

The woman (the Jewish peo-ple from whom the Messiah is born?) will be cared for in the desert “for a time, times and half a time” out of the reach of the serpent, Satan (Rev 12.14). In 12.6 this care lasts for 1,260 days. “The Gentiles will trample on the holy city for 42 months” (11.2; see Lk 21.24); the two witnesses will prophesy for 1,260 days and then be killed (11.3, 7); the first beast “will exercise his author-ity for 42 months” (13.5)

The divine court will sit and take away the little horn’s do-minion, completely destroying it (7.9ff, 22, 26). See 2.34, “a rock was cut out, but not by human hands. It struck the statue . . and smashed them”.

“He shall be broken, but by no human hand” (8.25, ESV).

Rev 20.4, “I saw thrones on which were seated those who had authority to judge” - this may be the judgment of the Beast’s empire – which had judged and condemned the saints.

The 4th world kingdom is de-stroyed by God. The 4th beast was slain . . and thrown into the blazing fire (7.11; see 2.34, 44f)

“until the end that is decreed is poured out on him” (9.27, as-suming “him” is the one that causes the desolation).

Rev 19.20, both beasts were thrown alive into the lake of fire.

The woman (the Jewish peo-ple from whom the Messiah is born?) will be cared for in the desert “for a time, times and half a time” out of the reach of the serpent, Satan (Rev 12.14).
