The Chapel has been very involved in Biblical Counseling from its beginning.

As we have grown and matured in the Word, we have sought to help people change through the

supremacy of Christ and the sufficiency of His Word in face-to-face people ministry.

It is my joy to give you a brief overview of the Key Models in Biblical Counseling. These are the

foundations the Bible has laid for us to help us in the personal ministry of the Word.

Colossians 1:27-2:7

We are, I counseling, bringing to a person, the Lord Jesus Christ. Faith in Him, obedience to

Him and walk with Him are our primary change objectives.

The Authority of Scripture

1 Timothy 24:16-17

The standard for all Biblical Counseling is the Word of God. We affirm it for all of life and

living, not just in theory, but in every aspect of holiness and godliness. It completely equips us

for every good work as it is understood, taught and applied rightly.

The Sufficiency of the Promises

2 Peter 1:3-8

We have all we need for life and godliness through a practical and productive knowledge of

Jesus. We come to know Him through the promises He has given resulting in the hard work of

cultivating His virtues in our lives.

Three Tree Model

Scriptures

Jeremiah 17:5-10

Contrast of responses to difficult situations rooted in desperately sinful hearts needing

the penetrating gaze of the Word of God.

Deuteronomy 8

God who gives both wilderness and manna so as to expose whether God’s people will

obey from heart. Thus, living, not by bread alone, but by every Word from God is what

Jesus needs and what God’s people need in temptation.

God – Sovereign, Good and Wise

Situation – My life with its heat and dew, hardships and blessings

My Response – How I respond with sinful actions and emotions.

My Heart – Where I believe and want in terms of words and thoughts as the source of my actions and

emotions

My Savior – All that He has provided by the Spirit’s stream of grace

Repentance – Where my beliefs and wants are changed, my mind is renewed, so that I put off sin and

put on righteousness with the result that I please God with godly fruit.

The Word of God is able to pierce and perceive the beliefs and wants, (thoughts and

motives) of the heart

Satan tempts Eve’s heart, before the fall, presenting lies to be believed and attractions to

be desired, craved and pursued.

Principles

Heart as the root with its internal functions of belief, want, choice and emotions…Emerging from is the fruit of my actions

Eventually produces a harvest.
