    Call for Papers

On 1 February 2003 titles and abstracts (250 words) are due from interested contributors to an International Colloquium entitled Current Issues in State Formation: the Mediterranean and Beyond, to be held at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on 17-19 October 2003; titles and abstracts should be sent to Donald Haggis ([email protected]), Nicola Terrenato ([email protected]), or Robert Vander Poppen ([email protected]). Further information is available at http://www.classics.unc.edu/wgems/. The purpose of the colloquium is to assess the current state of research in the study of state formation, to bring together diverse practitioners and strands of the discourse on early state societies, and to encourage a broad discussion of methods, approaches, and case studies. At least three major sessions are planned: one concerning theories about early states going beyond simple evolutionism, one specifically presenting and discussing Mediterranean case-studies, and one on the contribution of environmental archaeology to the problem. Proposals for other sessions and individual papers are invited; individual contributions might include the following topics: Results of excavations and surveys Formal and functional definitions of the “state” (e.g., city-states, ethnos states, polis states, palace states,

kingdom states, etc.) Definitions of integration and complexity in analyses of state structure Modeling the process of emergence and changing organizational structure Effective scales of analysis of on-site, local, and regional patterns Methods of analyzing patterns of site distribution and interaction Definitions of “pre-state” society and the implications of pre-state structure for analyses of state formation Kinship and social structure Environmental context and patterns of land use on local and regional scales Comparative perspectives Ethnographic analogies and applications Ceramic studies Future Lectures and Conferences

    Obituary

The editors of Nestor are saddened to report the death of Charles J. Vitaliano. His analyses of tephra from the Minoan eruption in Santorini, Greece, contributed to the investigation of ash distribution from that eruption and to the study of volcanic deposits which are relevant to the chronology of the Aegean Bronze Age. In addition to other publications on these subjects, he contributed to all three conferences on Thera and the Aegean World.
