TheporHonsofthepropertythatBigCedarLodgeencompasseshavepassedthroughseveralhands.IniHallyitwaspurchasedfromtheArmyCorpofEngineersin1901,byRobertF.HubbardofCazenovia,NewYork.In1927JulianSimmonsofSpringfieldpurchased80acresoftheland.ThenHarryWormanandIrvingSchwab,a\orneysfromSpringfieldMO,purchasedanaddiHonal320acres.In1946,thelandwasthenendowedtoTheSchooloftheOzarksandShriner’sChildren’sHospitalbyWorman.Thenthelandwaspurchasedby,MadryandFaucet,alocalloggingfirm.In1947,DanNorris,aCaliforniaDeveloperpurchasedtheland,withtheintenHontoopentheareaasranchcalled,Devil’sPoolGuestRanch.A`erDan’sdeath,ownershipfellintothehandsofFordMotorsCreditCompany.Inthe1970’sitwaspurchasedbyOakmontDevelopment.Andfinallyin1987,JohnnyMorrispurchasedthelandthatistoday,knownasBigCedarLodge.

AsyouwindthroughourwoodedentrancetoBigCedarLodge,theruggednessofthisremoteseongwillsurelyinspirecuriosityabouttheNaHveAmericansandwildcreatureswhoroamedthesehillsforcenturies,livinginharmonywiththeland.TuckeddeepintheheartoftheOzarkMountains,theareawasaccessibleonlybyhorsebackorfoot.

Justa`ertheturnofthetwenHethcentury,railroadsmadetheirappearanceandthisphenomenalretreatfromtheeverydayworldbecameavacaHonparadisefortravelers.The1920sfoundtwoprominentMissouriansmakingplanstobuildlavishbackcountryresorthomesonlandadjoiningtheLongCreekArmoftheWhiteRiverknownasBigCedarHollow.Together,JudeSimmons,businessentrepreneur,andHarryWorman,FriscoRailroadexecuHve,acquiredatotalof300forestedacres,andconstrucHonbegan.

Simmonschosealogmansion,reminiscentofthegrandwildernesshunHnglodgesfoundintheAdirondacksregion,whileWormanconstructedhisretreatinthetradiHonalTudorstyleofstoneandstucco.NaHvematerialswereusedthroughoutbothhomesleavingthehillsidesmorevulnerabletoerosion.

AstheGreatDepressionle`theAmericaneconomyindecline,travelbecamemoredifficultandthetwofamilieswereunabletospendHmehere.Thepropertywaslaterowned,forashortHme,byaveryconsumpHveloggingfirmbeforebeingpurchasedin1947byDanNorris,arealestateexecuHveandhoteloperator.HisaddiHonofalodge,swimmingpool,andstablecreatedtheDevil’sPoolGuestRanch.

FollowingBassProShops’acquisiHonofthepropertyin1987,founderJohnMorrischosetorestoretheSimmonsandWormanbuildingstotheiroriginalprominence,iniHaHngarigorouscommitmenttorenewthenaturalbeautyofBigCedarHollow.

AsyoubecomeapartoftheBigCedarLodgefamily,theextravagantpagesofourpastwillminglewiththemorerecentawarenessofourenvironmenttosurroundyouinwarmOzarkhospitality,lotsoffriendlysmiles,andthea\enHontodetailthatyouwillsoonrealizeareapartofeverydaylifeinourresort.Comese\leintothesheerenjoymentoftheOzarkMountaincountrysidewrappedaroundtheshoresofprisHneTableRockLake.In1958,theWhiteRiverwasdammedtoformTableRockLakeandthestagewassetfortheOzarks’premierwildernessresort.

TheSpiritofDorothyHarryandhiswifeDorothyWormanweresomeofthefirstresidentsofBigCedarHollowandenjoyedmanyyearsinthesecludedOzarkswilderness.Unfortunatelythetwodivorcedinthemid1930’sforreasonsunknown,buttherewerealwayspossibleexplanaHons:theagedifferencebetweenthetwo,thea\racHonthatDorothysharedwithherneighborJudeorthefactthatHarrywasfrequentlyawayonbusiness.A`erthedivorce,DorothywouldsHllvisitDevil’sPool.

Dorothyeventuallyremarriedandshortlytherea`ertraveledtoMexico.WhileinMexicoCityshediedundersuddenandmysteriouscircumstances.Somesourcessayshewasmurderedbutthereisnoconcreteevidenceoffoulplay.OthersclaimsheranawaytoMexicowithoneoftheDevil’sPoolcaretakers,astorythatlackscredibility.Whateverhappened,herbodywascrematedandherashessentbacktoDevil’sPooltobesca\eredneartheWorman’shome.PeoplesaythatDorothyWorman’sghostwalksthegroundsofDevil’sPool,perhapsbecauseofthemysteriouscircumstancessurroundingherdeath.9
