A committee has been formed to check the current guild logo to be used for stationery, etc. They have decided to take “Friendliest Home Town” off. Meeting Minutes

Discussion was held regarding increasing our membership, since we have 16 on the wait list. Debbie Bookman made a motion to increase the membership to 80. Joan Trecartin seconded. Since we did not have a majority of members present, it was decided to vote by email or by calling Flo or Dottie. An email will be sent out, so please look for it and respond before June 14. Question was asked whether or not we have a set amount for the chapter to spend on charity projects. Discussion followed. It was agreed to continue as we have so far in doing as many charity projects as we have money available and with donations made by members. There being no further business, meeting was adjourned.

Grandparents Camp will be held at: Manatee Rec Center

Set up room: 9:00 AM Will start at: 10:00 AM

Monday June 13th Monday June 27th Monday July 11th Monday July 25th

We will also need sewing machines if any one would bring theirs for the kids to use.

More information will be forthcoming as time gets nearer.

June Birthdays: Happy Birthday to Debbie Bookman, Brenda

Severa and Patty Cross

Members’ Highlights:

Linda Hungerford and her husband Dan, a John Deere retiree, have two children and five grandchildren, four of them boys under the age of six. Until four years ago, Linda lived in the Midwest all her life, and counts nearly 32 years in West Des Moines, Iowa as her best years… except for the weather. She began making her first quilt in 1976 when living in Michigan, learning to cut cardboard templates, use scissors to cut fabric, and hand piece and hand quilt. As a sewist, she has always kept her hands busy and has at one time or another also done macramé, knitting, crocheting, crewel embroidery, needlepoint, candlewicking, tatting, bobbin lace-making, smocking, embroidery, and counted cross-stitch (in the early 80s she owned a shop). When living in Wisconsin, she worked for Nancy’s Notions. In 1994 Linda began attending college while working full time as an administrative assistant. In 2000 she graduated with a journalism degree from Drake University, Des Moines, Iowa. After working in a public relations agency for a year, she became an editor atAmerican Patchwork and Quilting magazine, then turned to freelance writing for quilting magazines such as Quilter’s Newsletter, Love of Quilting, Quilter’s World, American Quilter, and others. In 2006, Linda wrote First Time Quiltmaking (Landauer Publishing), a book based on the beginner quiltmaking classes she teaches. She taught 25, five week long classes before moving to The Villages, and has continued teaching quiltmaking at the Lifelong Learning College. In 2012 Linda won a Bernina Aurora 440 sewing machine for “Best of Show” at the Machine Quilter’s Showcase. She is the co-founder of the Des Moines Modern Quilt Guild, and in 2012 started the Central Florida Modern Quilt Guild. She currently gives programs and workshops to guilds, and enters and shows her quilts at national quilt shows. Linda is also a domestic machine quilting instructor and enthusiast. Linda has been blogging regularly since

2009, at FlourishingPalms.blogspot.com, and is active on Instagram as FlourishingPalms

Reminders: Please, if you wish to work on committee, remember to contact Flo Knorr at 203-4007 or Dottie Myers at 399-5636 or Kathleen Grahms at 734-646-1809 with any

ideas, suggestions or class offering. We need for all do their parts.

Please contact Judy Saak at 618-604-4862 or [email protected] to report your charities.

Reminders: Please note that any items to be added to the newsletter must be approved by Flo Knorr or Kathy Grahms.

Cook Books: “Cooking in Paradise” There are approximately 125 cookbooks remaining to be sold (from a total of 1100 published). No money will be returned to the Chapters (from presales) or donated to Shepherd's Lighthouse until ALL books are sold. Shepherd's Lighthouse will be completing the second phase of their extensive remodeling this fall (September/October) – and this is our target date to finish selling the remaining cookbooks

Check your Christmas list, upcoming family occasions, and quilting friends up north – wouldn't they like a cookbook? Cookbooks also make wonderful hostess gifts. Cost of a cookbook is $20. As an extra incentive, we will mail cookbooks to snowbirds free of shipping charges!

Here are just a few of the recipes we've tried and loved: *Cream of Broccoli Soup (p. 43) *Grape Salad (p. 48 – just like at Chicken Salad Chicks!)

*Tomato Basil Pasta Soup (p. 72) *Pear and Blue Cheese Salad (p. 95) *Chicken Supreme (p. 128) *Thai Wings (p. 326 – from Evans Country Club)

*We thank you for helping the Quilt Guild reach our goal!

Tips and Notes: Easy Cleanup: Pick up a toilet brush from the store and keep it in the sewing room. At

the end of a long quilting session, just skim the brush over the carpet to catch all those loose threads before they get tangled up in the vacuum roller bar. Works like a charm!

Add Timeless Charm To Any Quilt With Scrappy Quilt Borders By Sherri McConnell

I love finding new ways to use my scraps, and have done my fair share of scrap quilting. But, have you ever though of using scraps as a border for on of your favorite quilts or quilt blocks? You can have fun using those wonderful scraps by creating delightful scrappy quilt borders for quilts of all styles and sizes. Here are some tips and ideas to get you started creating fun borders from scraps.

Most quilters end up collecting an abundance of scraps left over from various projects and then wonder about the best way to use them. There is something about a scrappy quilt border that lends a sense of timeless charm to any quilt, so why not plan ahead for some wonderful scrappy quilt borders.

Make a uniform border scrappy.

One of the easiest ways to have fun with a scrappy quilt border is to utilize a ready-made pattern. Even if the pattern design doesn’t call for a scrappy border, it can easily be adapted to use your scrap fabrics. Any patchwork border pieced from a uniform combination of fabrics can easily be made scrappy: Simply count the number of blocks needed, determine the size of the blocks according to pattern directions and then use your scraps to piece a variety of combinations for a unique look. Some patchwork designs that easily lend themselves to scrappy piecing include: four-patch , nine-patch, Flying Geese, square-in-a-square, half-square triangle, and the quarter-square triangle designs.

Make a border from strip sets.

One easy way to make scrappy quilt borders using left over fabric from the quilt is to sew fabric strips together of the same size or of varying sizes. Then, cross-cut these strip-pieced units to the desired border width plus seam allowances. You will end up with a scrappy strip-pieced border that is quick and easy to piece together.

Add Timeless Charm To Any Quilt With Scapppy Quilt Borders By Sherri McConnell

Create a border using rectangles or squares. Rectangles and squares are the easiest shapes to use when making a scrappy quilt

border. Cut rectangles to the desired width, sew them end to end. Then trim them to the exact length needed for each border. Use rectangles of the same length, or use a variety of lengths for variety.

Squares can also be cut and sewn end to end for a delightful scrappy border. When using squares, you will need to divide your finished border length by the square size to know how many squares to cut, so they fit evenly into the border. If the numbers don’t work out evenly, you can make your border work by making it larger and taking slightly larger seam allowances in some of the seams.

Incorporate scrappy quilt borders in small quilts.

When working with small quilts and mini-quilts, it’s easy to incorporate scraps into the quilt borders. The mini “Round and Round” quilt below uses eight different fabrics in the border — four different fabrics are used for the corner squares along with an additional four fabrics used for the border sections. Remember that nothing needs to match, and have fun with the limitless scrappy combinations that can be created.
