(VJTI), Mumbai
About VJTI
Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute (VJTI) was established in 1887. It initially started
with two departments, namely the Sir J. J. School of Mechanical Engineering and the Rippon
Textile School. In 1913, the Institute was recognized by the then Government of Bombay as the
Central Technological Institute, Bombay Province. In addition to other Departments, a Depart-
ment of Sanitary Engineering and Plumbing was added in 1923. The Department started conduct
of the „Licentiate in Civil & Sanitary Engineering programme‟. The institute was granted adminis-
trative, academic, financial and managerial autonomy from June 21, 2004.
The Institute is reputed for excellent teaching and training in Engineering and Technology
at Diploma, Degree, Post Graduate levels and for Research. Presently VJTI offers Diploma in 6
disciplines of Engineering, B. Tech programmes in 9 disciplines of Engineering, 17 M. Tech. pro-
grammes, M.C.A. and Ph.D. programmes in various Engineering disciplines. Since the time of
inception, VJTI has been playing a vital role in producing quality Engineers, introducing new
programmes, and electives in emerging areas. In 1998, the Institute was renamed from “Victoria
Jubilee Technical Institute” to the present name “Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute”. The
Institute is affiliated to University of Mumbai for degree granting purpose. It was one of the es-
teemed institutes selected by the Central Government for further development with grant-in-aid
from the Centre under Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP - I & II).
VJTI is selected for establishment of Centre of Excellence (CoE) in "Complex & Nonlinear Dy-
namical Systems (CNDS)" under TEQIP-II with a funding by World Bank through National Pro-
ject Implementation Unit (NPIU), MHRD, New Delhi.

Overview
In this course, we discuss the nature of Big Data, various challenges associated with its
processing, techniques employed to address these challenges, and their applications. Specifically,
we address the role of semantics in analyzing big data that arises in the context of Physical-Cyber-
Social Systems. The relevance and use of semantic perception, distributed processing, annotations
of data for intelligent processing and dynamic semantic modeling to track relevant new concepts
and facts to handle the challenges of Volume, Variety and Velocity will be demonstrated. To han-
dle Veracity, we explore the formalization of trust models and approaches to glean trustworthi-
ness. The above four Vs of big data are harnessed by the semantics-empowered analytics to derive
value for supporting practical applications in domains such as healthcare, medical, traffic, and so-
cial to provide the 5th V – Value.
Trust relationships occur in many diverse contexts such as collaborative systems, e-
commerce, interpersonal interactions, social networks, and sensor web. As agents providing con-
tent and services become increasingly removed from the agents that consume them, the issue of
robust trust inference and update become critical. The goal is to provide a comprehensive broad
overview of the trust landscape, with some details of the theoretical underpinnings and compara-
tive analysis of Bayesian approaches to binary and multi-level trust and develop expressive trust
networks that can be assigned objective semantics.
Internationally acclaimed academician, researcher and practitioners with proven knowl-
edge, experience and demonstrable ability in teaching, consultancy, research and training in the
field of Big Data and Trust will deliver lectures and discuss cases in the course.
Course Objectives
1. Introducing Web 3.0 (Semantic Web) and information retrieval relevant to effective big data
processing to the students of various Institutes/Universities through interaction with Interna-
tional reputed faculty,
2. Strengthen the domain knowledge of Academic, research and industrial participants to the
fundamental concepts of big data and trust through illustrative examples,
3. To provide opportunity for the technical persons from Industry to improve understandings
and update their knowledge in the area of practical Challenges, Techniques and Applica-
tions of Big Data and Trust.
4. Providing exposure to the need for deriving value from big data and the various applications
enabled by them to industrial and other participants,
5. Providing comprehensive overview of the trust landscape and some of the theoretical under-
pinnings ., and
6. To create avenue for possible collaborative research with the international faculty in the field
of Big Data and Trust.
