in fY2014-2015, women and girls had a lot to celebrate. Women in Saudi arabia voted for the first time, electing 21 female candidates. Social media movements like #YesAllWomen, which spoke out about violence against women, and #HeForShe, which called on men and boys to promote gender equality, turned up the conversation on important women’s issues. the U.S. Secretary of Defense announced that all military combat roles will be open to women. and canada elected a feminist prime minister, who unprecedentedly appointed a cabinet with an equal number of women and men. But despite these notable strides, women around the world continue face many barriers to their success solely because of their gender.

that’s why for nearly 100 years, Soroptimist international of the americas® has focused on helping women and girls to reach their full potential. fY14-15 was no different. throughout the year, Soroptimist worked to accomplish bold goals and make big dreams come true for women and girls. it was a year of continued momentum as we served more women, grew member engagement, expanded our online brand recognition by engaging new people in our mission, and increased our collective impact.

as always, our Soroptimist leaders, regions, clubs, members, donors and staff, tirelessly dedicated their energy and passion to shaping the future of our organization. together, we worked across 20 countries and territories on life-changing programs that aim to fulfill our important mission. As you will read in this report, it is this collective action that has made a transformative impact on the lives of the women and girls we serve.

in addition to our hands-on work, this last year Soroptimist also started taking a hard look at our organization’s future and asking some critical questions: As we approach our organization’s 100th anniversary, what will our next 100 years look like? How can we help even more women and girls realize their dreams and reach their full potential? How can we best engage more people in our mission in this ever-changing volunteer landscape? in fY14/15, we began laying the groundwork for defining a measurable and specific goal that will help guide us into our next century and enable us to reach even more deserving women and girls.

Yes, as an organization we have bold goals. and thanks to the endless dedication and support of our leaders, members and donors, we are making big dreams come true for the world’s women and girls. thank you!

the Soroptimist Live Your Dream Awards: Education & Training Awards for Women program (formerly the Women’s Opportunity Awards) provides financial support to women working to enhance their economic status. the women who receive this award are a true inspiration. their extraordinary stories illustrate the transformative power of education. With incredible strength and courage these women are transcending unimaginable obstacles and creating better lives for themselves, their families and their communities.

Since 1972, Soroptimist has disbursed more than $30 million through this program, helping almost 20,000 women. recipients may use the cash grants however they choose in support of their education goals—including for tuition, books, childcare and transportation.

in fY14/15, 1,293 women received more than $1.7 million. this year, funding increased by $23,055 (1 percent) and 16 additional women received the award. Soroptimist clubs also gave more than 472 women additional support valued at $159,000, an increase of 124 percent over last year. this support was provided in the form mentoring, job training, tutoring, tax and financial advice, and childcare.

as in year’s past, three remarkable women—Shacambria, Yazmin and Sakura (who asked that her name be changed for privacy reasons)—received $10,000 federation-level awards. Read their amazing stories and learn more about this program at <bit.ly/LiveYourDreamAwards2015>.

launched in July 2014, Dream It, Be It: Career Support for Girls joins Live Your Dream: Education and Training Awards as Soroptimist international of the americas’ cornerstone programs. Dream It, Be It aims to help girls grow up to be strong, successful, happy adults. the program targets girls in secondary school who face obstacles to their future success. it provides girls with access to professional role models, career education and the resources to live their dreams. Soroptimist clubs in 20 countries and territories work in partnership with girls in small groups or a conference setting to provide them with the information

and resources they want and need to be successful. the topics covered include career opportunities, setting and achieving goals, overcoming obstacles to success and how to move forward after setbacks or failures.

in fY14/15, Soroptimist clubs around the world began planning and laying the groundwork for Dream It, Be It projects in their local communities. clubs are eager to begin their new projects and empower girls through access to education and role models. read more about Dream It, Be It: Career Support for Girls at <bit.ly/aboutDiBi>.

Soroptimist received 78 proposals requesting $517,500 in funding. a task force made up region program chairs reviewed the proposals and recommended funding to the Soroptimist president for approval.

for fY14/15, Soroptimist granted a total of $212,295 to 43 Soroptimist clubs for new or ongoing projects. Grants ranged from $500 to $10,000 and were given to clubs in five countries— Brazil, Japan, paraguay, the philippines, and the United States.

this year’s projects include hosting self-esteem building workshops for girls; training multilingual hotline counselors to

assist immigrant domestic violence and/or trafficking victims; and providing skills-training courses to prepare women to enter the job market. to date, 39 projects have been completed, with 93 percent meeting their stated objectives.

as in years past, the grants not only helped women and girls; they also helped the clubs. of the clubs that have submitted a final report, 72 percent gained new members and 69 percent received media coverage as a result of the funded projects.

Soroptimist’s Disaster Grants for Women and Girls target the special needs of women and girls before, during and after disasters. Women and girls are particularly vulnerable during disasters and lack access to resources. they also have special abilities to respond to disasters, which are often overlooked. While disasters create hardships for many, women and girls suffer disproportionately because of existing gender inequalities that are magnified during and following a disaster.

in fY14/15, $132,938 was distributed to Soroptimist clubs/regions. Seven grants, totaling $94,255, were used in support of disaster relief projects—six were issued to Soroptimist clubs and one was issued to an external organization, madre/Karapatan. one hundred percent of the Soroptimist supported projects met their stated objectives.

financial hiGhliGhtsin fY14/15, Soroptimist international of americas had a reduction of $1.6 million in net assets despite lower than budgeted operating expenses. this reduction was due to the Soroptimist Board’s continued investment in its life-changing programs and efforts to build sponsorship and membership through its standard spend policy allocation, and to the significant decrease in market value of investments. Soroptimist’s fiscal year ended the same time the equities market experienced its worst performance since 2011 and did not allow investments to recoup the unrealized losses. Financial facts of the fiscal year included:

• member dues are Soroptimist’s largest source of revenue providing $2.4 million or 55.1 percent of operating revenue and grew 19.2 percent over FY13/14 reflecting the dues increase. Contributions and sponsorship revenue account for 40.7 percent of operating revenue portfolio and was down 13.6 percent from fY13/14. the decrease was due to the expected drop in laurel Society contributions in a non-convention year and the value of the Yen. Soroptimist relies on contributions to fund its programs and recovers 68 percent of program costs from the $1.7 million contributed by its generous donors to fund Soroptimist programs that benefit women and girls, relying on the standard spend policy allocation to fund the remaining 32 percent.

• Soroptimist suffered from a weak investment market as a result of the correction that took place in the last weeks of its fiscal year. This was the major factor in the decrease in net assets in fY14/15. Soroptimist can invest up to 70 percent of its restricted reserves in equities to build the value of its assets. investment income and capital gains have accounted for 27 percent of total revenue in past years. investment income of $284,354 with realized capital gains of $680,552 and unrealized capital losses of $1,844,725 yielded a combined loss of $879,819 at 8/31/2015.

• 86 percent of total expenses for the year were spent on program service activities including Soroptimist’s live Your Dream awards, the Dream it Be it program, club Grants for Women and Girls, Disaster Grants for Women and Girls, and member services and governance. total operating expenses were $277,743 lower than budgeted. the excess of operating expenses over revenue was 53.7 percent better than planned.

• Soroptimist international of the americas continues to be a financially sound organization. Although Soroptimist recorded a net loss for the year due primarily to the change in its investment value, over the past 11 years investments have performed higher at 128.7 percent, 25 points greater than the market average.
