IMPLEMENT THESEMETHODS IN YOURDAILY ROUTINE:How to Use Habits to Reach Your Goals

One of the keys to reaching a new goal is to havehabits in place that support that goal. If yourcurrent habits are counter-productive, you'll needto change them or run the risk of coming upshort.

How do habits help you reach your goals?

Suppose you have the goal of running amarathon: if you don’t already have the habit ofrunning regularly, you're unlikely to besuccessful until you can adopt that habit. Runningregularly can help you attain your goal in severalways, including getting you in great physicalshape and strengthening your endurance.

Developing supportive habits can be easier thanyou think and far more powerful than you canimagine!

Identify the Habits You Need

Before you create new, positive habits, you’llwant to figure out which habits will help youattain your goals. For every goal, there arehabits that can practically guarantee success.Reflect on your goals and what actions you cantake to help bring them about.

Consider these attributes for the habits youwant to implement:

1. Look for daily habits. Habits youpractice each day are much easier to putinto place and keep than those that areless frequent.

2. Keep it simple. The more complex thetask, the less likely you are to stick withit. If you really do need to implement acomplex habit, start with a simplerversion and then add more complexitylater.

3. Be specific. It's not enough to justspecify what you're going to do; includethe how, when, and where as well. Timeis always critical when creating a newhabit. Be sure to specify a precise periodof time in which you wish to implementthe new actions.

• So "I'm going to exercise 1 hour per day"is inadequate. "I'm going to swim from6-7 am, Monday through Friday at theYMCA" is more like it. This has enoughdetail to be quite clear about what youwant to accomplish and includes thehow, when and where.

Prepare for Interference

There are usually obstacles to creating new habitsand behavioral patterns. Try to figure out thesepossibilities ahead of time so you can eliminatethem as soon as possible.

For example, if you've decided that you're goingto eat a healthy breakfast every day, get rid of all

the breakfast junk food in your pantry andfreezer. That junk food is an obstacle tosuccessfully implementing your habit.

The obstacle might be time interference. Maybeyour partner doesn’t usually leave you alone for30 minutes every night so you can meditate, write, read, or whatever it is you want to dotowards your goal. Simply let them know aheadof time that you need be undisturbed during thistime.

Look for More Supporting Habits

When you determine supporting habits that willhelp you reach your goal, consider going evendeeper into the details to find habits that will helpyou accomplish your other new habits.

For example, if one of your new habits is to makeit to the gym every morning by 6:00 am, you candevelop several supporting habits to help youestablish this habit, such as:

• Get out of bed by 5:15 am.

• In order to get up at 5:15 am each day,you might need an additional habit ofalways being in bed by 10:00 pm.

• Another supporting habit might be topack your gym bag the night before.

These supporting habits are monumentallyimportant. Take time to think about whatadditional habits you can develop to support yourefforts.

Enjoy Automatic Success

Once an action becomes a habit, you’ll do itautomatically, without having to make thedecision to do it each time. In other words, you’llautomatically move forward, day after day, toward achieving your goal until you reach it.

Just as counter-productive habits can keep youfrom success, supportive habits can practicallyguarantee your victory. So consider the habitsthat will best support your goals, put them intoaction on a daily basis, and enjoy your newsuccess!

5 Actions That Bring You Success

Who doesn't want more success? Whateveryou've already accomplished, there's alwaysanother interesting mountain to climb. If you’relooking for more achievement, you can improveyour life dramatically with a few simplechanges.

Although these suggestions are straightforward, most of them will require constant attention for alittle while until they become habitual. Once theybecome automatic, though, you'll be thrilled withyour progress.

Try these ideas to enjoy greater success:

1. Hang out with successful individuals. You'll frequently find that you achieveabout as much as the people with whomyou spend the most time. If you want tobe successful, affiliate as often as youcan with people who are more successfulthan you. There are a couple of reasonsfor this:

• You'll be exposed to a completelydifferent way of thinking and interactingwith the world. Very successful peoplelook at many things differently thanthose who are less successful. Integratingsome of these ideas into your ownthinking will likely bring you moresuccesses of your own.

• You'll also encounter new opportunities.High-achieving people frequently haveall kinds of ventures going on; you neverknow when they might need a helpinghand. You’ll also get to connect withtheir peer group, who are likely to bevery successful as well.

2. Adjust your attitude. Successful peopleusually have a positive attitude. That'swhat allows them to move forwardaggressively. This is not the same asacting foolishly, however.

• Minor challenges don't bog them downbecause they believe that things willwork out in the end. They also keep thebigger picture in mind, so minorchallenges are just that – minor.

• If you want to be wealthy, do you havepositive attitudes about wealth andwealthy people? If you want to behealthy, do you have a positive outlookabout that? Your attitudes must becongruent with your objectives.

• Everything starts internally; seeingoutside changes in your life takes time.

3. Be organized and focused. Before yougo to bed each night, make a list with allthe things you want to accomplish thenext day. Doing this at night gives yourbrain a chance to work on things in yoursleep. Also, you’ll feel much better whenyou can start the day with a clearobjective instead of spending time tryingto figure out what to do.

4. Have goals. Your brain is tremendouslygood at finding solutions. You can help itout by doing a good job of outlining andprioritizing your objectives. The simplestway to do this is to write down your goaland include a deadline. Now your brainknows what to work on and when to haveit accomplished.

• Read over your goals at least twice a dayto provide mental emphasis that they’reimportant. We all know how easy it is toget sidetracked by 50 other things andforget all about our goals and plans.

These 4 simple ideas can bring you great power,if you'll use them to your advantage.

Being successful is really no more challengingthan being unsuccessful. Both require specificactions and attitudes applied consistently over aperiod of time. Make some changes today andgive yourself the gift of success

Strengthening Your Persistence for GreaterSuccess

One of the greatest character traits you can haveis persistence. According to the WordbookDictionary, “persistence” is determination,

tenacity and “the act of persevering; continuingor repeating a behavior.” Being persistent meansyou’ll keep trying until you accomplish a goalor get something right.

Reflect back on times when you were persistent. What did you do? How long and how often didyou repeat the behavior you needed for success?Did you get the results you wanted? What didyou learn from the experience?

One key to experiencing positive results fromyour persistence is to know when you must bepersistent. Once you have a feel for determiningwhen being persistent is most likely to help youget what you desire, you can practice strategiesthat help you develop greater persistence. As withmany other activities, the more you practice thebetter you get!

Try these techniques to develop morepersistence for greater success in yourendeavors:

1. Accept that anyone can be persistent. If you’ve ever doubted you could hang induring a difficult situation until your goalis met, doubt no more. Everyone iscapable of exhibiting perseverance.

2. Ask yourself, “How important is thisissue?” Because being persistent requiresquite a bit of mental energy - and insome cases, physical energy as well - youwant to be sure that the issue or situationis important enough to you to put in theeffort.

3. Be very clear about your goal. Knowwhat you want. What do you hope to

accomplish? Your focus on the desiredend product or goal will propel youforward.

4. Faith is the fuel. Although beingpersistent doesn’t require any particulartalent or skill, it does take some faith tokeep you going. It’s important to trulybelieve that what you’re working towardwill work out eventually. If you believe, you will persist.

5. Try different angles. If one approachdoesn’t work, try another. Then repeat anapproach you tried earlier but adjust it.Sometimes, persistence involves acertain amount of experimentation beforeyou achieve your goal.

6. It’s okay to change what you want andtweak your goals. If you find that yoursituation has changed or the goal is nolonger integral to your life, changedirections with confidence. Create a newplan that will get you to your new goal.

7. Avoid giving up unless your goalchanges or the importance of the issuehas waned.

8. Be inspired by someone who persistedand succeeded. Stories of persistenceleading to success are everywhere toinspire you. Writers, athletes, musicians, and people from other walks of life havetheir inspiring stories of persistence totell.

• J. K. Rowling, the author of the HarryPotter series, claims to have submitted

her first Potter novel to many publisherswho rejected the manuscript numeroustimes before it was finally accepted forprinting. Throughout those months ofwaiting, Rowling just kept writing aboutHarry and his crew. She persisted.

• Consider Michael Jordan, proclaimedas the best basketball player ever bymany all over the world. Jordan says hedidn’t make the varsity basketball teamin his high school when he was asophomore. And that fact only made himmore determined. He was persistent andeventually achieved every goalimaginable in his field.

• Find your own hero who persisted androse above the fray. Seek your owninspiration to compel you to bepersistent.

Know the importance of the situation as well asyour goal. Have faith, experiment, and adjustyour goals if need be. Don’t give up unless it’stime. Finally, find your own hero who persistedand eventually achieved great things.

How to Finish What You Start

Whenever you start something, you’re filled withinterest and anticipation. You wonder how theproject or event is going to progress. You thinkabout how hard you’ll work on it. But then one

day, the project doesn’t seem as important as youthought.

When this happens, your cherished goal loses itsglow. Plus, you now have some other things youneed to work on. Gradually, the project you wereall excited about gets put on the back burner. Before you know it, months have gone by andyou never seem to have the time or energy to goback and finish it.

Would you like to change this recurring sequenceof events? Imagine your feelings of pride andaccomplishment as you begin to finish yourprojects – one after the other. But how can youturn things around to where you can consistentlycomplete your projects?

Try these strategies to help you finish whatyou start:

1. Prioritize. Before you jump in and beginsomething, ask yourself whether it’sreally important. One key to finishingwhat you start is to not begin somethingthat has little relevance in your life.

• For example, buying that expensiveItalian language package to learn tospeak Italian might sound challengingand fun, but do you have a trip plannedto Italy or some other Italian-speakingcountry within the next year? Maybeyou’re headed to Mexico instead. Howmuch good will speaking Italian do youthere?
