Welcome to the Big South Fork Visitor Guide (BSFVG) – your guide to the majestic, and exciting Big South Fork National River & Recreation Area (BSFNRRA). This spring has been awesome; refreshing after the cold and long winter that we just endured. The redbuds, dogwood, and cherry blossoms have brightened everything. It seems like the colors have been more vivid this year. Birds are chirping, cows and horses are grazing lush pastures, and the horse trails are busy with folks enjoying the magnificent, seemingly endless, groomed trails. This is our fifth annual BSFVG. It is always a pleasure to share this magical place with families, horse lovers, and those searching for the perfect place to retire or relocate. Thousands

of acres of wildlife, horse and hiking trails, free flowing rivers, amazing overlooks, luxury cabins to primitive camping, quaint restaurants, and unique shops excite all the senses. “Annie” and family have been busy exploring some new trails, cabins, restaurants, horse trails, and shops that have opened recently and have revisited others to see what is new. Our family enjoys setting off on a Saturday morning adventure. We end up in some of the most amazing places. Recently, we had the great pleasure of staying at “Hanging it Up”, part of the Laurel Fork Rustic Retreat rental program. We had a great time. You can read more about our visit on page 12. One of our favorite hikes is to the Angel Falls Overlook. We were able to complete this hike (moderate to challenging trail) to reach our destination, the beautiful Angel Falls Bluff Overlook, and marvel at the river below and enjoy our picnic. Although the economic times have curtailed many family vacations, more people are finding how affordable a vacation to the Big South Fork region is. More families are out enjoying a picnic, hiking, and camping in the great outdoors. They are camping in some of the awesome campgrounds (see page 6) or renting a cabin with another family and enjoying this relaxing, stress-free getaway. There are plenty of places to eat. Some of our favorites are the new Garden Grill in downtown Jamestown (read more inside). Coffee Time Café is the place for breakfast. They are open from the wee hours of the morning until mid afternoon for breakfast and lunch. The place for steak and Tex-Mex is Preston’s Steakhouse in Oneida, where the steaks are hand cut and grilled to perfection. Bacara’s is a great destination restaurant, where memories are created and wonderful German dinners are served. The BSFNRRA is known for its miles and miles of abundant equestrian trails, horse camps and equestrian lifestyle options. You can rent horses, take lessons, go to a horse clinic, or trailer your horses to many locations. Opportunities abound. Gated horse communities allow you to enjoy private trails or those adjacent to the community. The premier horse facility, East Fork Stables beckons with over 100 miles of groomed trails and plenty of camp sites, annual events and organized trail rides to keep the novice to experienced rider entertained. Mike at Cedar Creek Cattle Company continues to expand his horse facility to include family fun, organized rides, and rents horses by the hour or by the day. The opportunities don’t stop there, see page 4-5 for more ideas. Hiking is a favorite pastime for many and there are amazing trails at Pickett State Park, the Big South Fork, and other parks in the area with varying degrees of difficulty. Canoeing or rafting is also spectacular. Sheltowee Trace Outfitters is the place to be! Their expert guides can put together a custom package to explore the wilderness or you can book a pre-arranged package deal with overnight tent lodging or a cabin, plus a full day out canoeing the Big South Fork and enjoying a boxed lunch with geocaching the next day. There are packages for couples, families, and solo! Let Sheltowee Trace Outfitters tailor a package for you.

Girls’ getaways are also a favorite and Loree Guest Ranch can make your special “ya-ya” weekend getaway a memorable experience. Enjoy the sprawling ranch, horseback rides by cowboy, Larry of Southeast Pack Trips, catered meals by Faye and Tommy with the luxury of the in-ground pool where rest and relaxation are abundant. Shopping is always a favorite pastime and Rim Riders Equestrian Lifestyles offers a great destination as does The Boutique with their trendy clothing, lots of accessories, candles, handbags and a full line of loose teas, teapots and more! If you prefer to ATV and OHV, Brimstone Recreation is the premier off-road destination. They offer season passes and day passes to ride their exhilarating trails. Spend the night at one of the awesome accommodations and enjoy God’s country in the rough. The Big South Fork is an expansive, fun, and relaxing place to enjoy nature and to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Go to the official Big South Fork Destination website, www.Go2BSF.com and find the perfect horse camp, cabin, bed and breakfast, and events perfect for you. Enjoy your trip. Happy Trails!

Big South Fork Trails

Toll Free 888-Go2-BSF0 (462-2730) / www.Go2BSF.comDALE HOLLOW MARKETING GROUP, LLC

The Big South Fork is well known as the “Trail Riding Capital of the Southeast” for good reason. There are miles and miles of well groomed equestrian trails, as well as, hiking, biking, and OHV trails through the rugged Big South Fork National River & Recreation Area (BSFNRRA), area state parks, and at private destinations. These trails offer an outstanding adventure to anyone who loves the great outdoors. Enjoy a night out under the stars (where you can still actually see the stars). Listen to the melodies of the creatures of the night. See the vibrant colors of the vast and varied flora and fauna for a few hours or a few days. If that isn’t long enough, abundant retirement/relocation opportunities await. There are superb equestrian property developments, gated and non-gated, for those looking for a place to call home with miles of trails within the developments and neighbors that love horses and the trails, too. Here we will share a little about a few opportunities to enjoy the equestrian side of life through campgrounds and trail riding opportunities.

Cedar Creek Cattle Company, located in Clarkrange, TN invites you to step back in time and take a look at the “Old West”. They offer horse rentals (hourly, daily, and family rates) with an experienced guide. A three bedroom guest house with a private barn and pasture is available. You have the chance to stay in an authentic Indian Tipi that sleeps 6. Stall and paddock rentals are available. They have a monthly cattle gathering, and offer riding lessons for you or your family with a horse day camp available for the children. They have two round pens and an indoor arena. To spice things up a bit, they also offer BBQ’s and live entertainment. Visit www.CedarCreekCattleCompany.com or call 931-260-1650 for more information or to book your visit. New Beginnings Youth Ranch is also located at Cedar Creek Cattle Company. Through this program, founder Mike Archambault and his staff are endeavoring to reach out to troubled youth through a Christ centered horsemanship

East Fork Stables sits upon 12,000 acres of privately owned land with over 150 miles of well marked trails. They are well known for their organized trail rides, themed trail rides, entertainment, and hearty meals. The rides are guided by experienced and knowledgeable trail masters that take you through the forests to places that are only accessible by horseback. The trails are lined with fabulous scenery, wildlife, grand overlooks, and along river banks. The team at East Fork Stables works hard to give their visitors a memorable experience. Plenty of campground area is available and they also offer cabin and cabarn (half cabin/half barn) rentals. Craig Cameron’s Extreme Cowboy Race will be at East Fork three times in 2010. Justin Case’s Horsemanship 101 is scheduled for July 10 & 11, 2010 and Brenda Imus is scheduled to visit in 2011. Visit online atwww.EastForkStables.com or call them toll free at 1-800-97-TRAIL.

HoneyCreek Horse Camp borders the BSFNRRA just south of the White Oak River in the Double Arch Retreat Estates, joining the Mt. Helen Horse Trail. The camp is designed with the RV/Horse trailer camper in mind. It is ideal for horse owners that want a place to camp with their horse and get out on the trails of the BSFNRRA without having to trailer their horses. Campsites and stalls are on a daily rental basis and the campsites offer full electric and water hookups. Plans are in the works to have a pig roast on Memorial Day and Labor Day Weekends this year. Give them a call at 423-569-2289 to reserve your space and to learn more about their facilities. Their website is www.honeycreekhorsecamp.com.

Saddle Valley Campground is surrounded by miles of riding trails in the BSFNRRA. They offer camp sites and cabins, stables and

corrals, guided horse rentals, a heated bathhouse, covered pavilion, water and electricity. Saddle Valley offers many events and themed rides throughout the riding season. Bring your own horse or rent one of theirs and come prepared to have a good time. Occasionally, overnight rides are scheduled including their “No Pack, Pack Trips” to places such as Station Camp Creek, Terry Cemetery, Angel Falls, and Charit Creek Lodge. Most require a 4 person minimum. For more information, visit www.SaddleValleyCampground.com or call Ed or Teresa at 931-879-6262.

Southeast Pack Trips offers custom horseback rides for pleasure trail riding, hunting trips, birthday and anniversary rides, overnight pack trips, and small or large group rides. Owner, Larry McMillan has over 20 years of experience in the Big South Fork. His slogan is “The Only Real Pack Trip in the Big South Fork”. Southeast Pack Trips has a small campground, a 10 stall barn, and paddocks available for horse trailers and campers with horses. There are also accommodations available for couples, families, and small groups. Larry offers trips year round and can pack you in on their horses. Let Larry know what kind of trip you would like and he will do his best to make it a reality. One of their most popular rides is the All Ladies Ride. He also offers rides that allow Boy/Girl Scouts to earn Merit badges/Insignias. Visit their website at www.SoutheastPackTrips.com, then give Larry a call at 931-879-2260 to schedule your adventure.

Saddle Brook Stables & Camping Facilities

A goldmine of regal equestrian beauty can be found nestled among the beautiful rolling hills atop the Cumberland Plateau at Saddle Brook Stables, located just outside of the Big South Fork National River and Recreational Area.

Saddle Brook Stables is owned by the Allred family - Fred, Brenda,

Freddy, Jon, Bethany, and Andrew. The family treasures Saddle Brook Stables as one of God’s great blessings in their lives. They deeply appreciate the opportunity to share and enjoy the life they live surrounded by the beauty of the region, their animals, and the people they encounter.

The family started on this equestrian journey on June 1, 1992 when they purchased their first pony – “Dusty”. It wasn’t long until they bought their first Tennessee Walking Horse at the Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration in August. “Midnight Crescent Moon” was a gorgeous black two-year old filly directly by the well known “Prides Generator”. These purchases were the beginning of something special for the

Allred family. Since this time, the family has worked at building their herd, fine tuning their breeding program as they go. Their goal is to produce some of the finest Tennessee Walking Horses possible with improved conformation, disposition and gait with an emphasis on color as well. They don’t seek to change the breed, but to enhance the wonderful qualities while maintaining the attributes that have made the breed so well known. For the Allred family, it is a labor of love. They adore their animals and enjoy the fellowship of other horse enthusiasts. Foremost, is the practice of Godliness and integrity in their daily lives and in the operation of their farm. They feel blessed to have a wonderful staff at Saddle Brook Stables that are more than happy to assist you in any way. Every member of the team promises to do their best to represent each horse with complete honesty and want you to feel free to ask as many questions as you like. So, while you are in the area if you are in the market to purchase a horse, or need a place to board or breed your horse stop by and talk to the friendly folks at Saddle Brook Stables. Be sure to visit them on the web to view the fabulous array of animals on their farm – www.TNWalk.com. You may also reach them by phone at (931) 879-6273 (Barn), (931) 879-9924 (Office) or Jon on his cell: (931) 397-5504.

The Big South Fork offers a smorgasbord of accommodations. There are all types to choose from. If you like luxury and lots of amenities, there are wonderful bed and breakfasts like Grey Gables Bed & Breakfast Inn located in historic Rugby, TN. Rugby is an English settlement founded by Thomas Hughes who wanted to create a Utopian village back in the late 1870’s. Old world charm awaits you at Loree Guest Ranch - a spacious ranch surrounded by 120 acres of pastures with beautiful rolling hills, and located adjacent to the BSFNRRA. Innkeeper, Faye, and her ranch hand son, Tommy, will spoil you with a fantastic home cooked breakfast or all your meals, arrange a horseback ride or lesson, suggest some nearby hikes, and even help you plan a family reunion, wedding, girls’ getaway, or a horse clinic. This is the only bed and breakfast ranch that offers all these amenities, plus an in-ground pool for their guests. Cabins dot the Big South Fork on either side of the river, and these wonderful chalets will accommodate any taste. Some of the newest cabins are the The Cabins of Elk Run. They offer breathtaking views from the side of the mountain where you can really enjoy the crisp clean air from the European/Austrian style balconies. These chalets sit on one of the Brimstone Recreation trails for those OHV enthusiasts. Families come from all over the country (and even Canada) to bring their off road vehicles and enjoy this perfect getaway. Cheryl and husband, Dennis moved here from the Caribbean a few years ago with a dream to enjoy retirement and to create a family friendly, efficient cabin that would allow their guests to enjoy God’s country. The cabins are beautiful with functionality in mind for their outdoor recreation activities. Longhorn Ranch is a beautiful, modern, fully equipped cabin with a hot tub located on the eastern side of the river. It offers horse stalls for your horses and a wonderfully decorated cabin for you. This high end cabin is very popular with folks looking to enjoy the fine cabin living when they bring their horse to ride for the weekend. It is conveniently located next to the Angel Falls trailhead which leads in to the expansive Big South Fork trail system. Laurel Fork Rustic Retreat offers twelve beautiful log cabins/chalets that are rented throughout the year. Read more about them on page 12. For those who are looking for a motel/hotel setting, the Jordan Motel is conveniently located on Hwy. 127, in the heart of the Big South Fork Country. They offer clean, modern motel rooms complete with WI-FI and phones in each room. They have an in-ground swimming pool that is open seasonally. Owners, Joyce and Vickie will be happy to look after you during your stay in the Big South Fork. On the other side of the river, Grand Vista Hotel offers a cooked breakfast, swimming pool, and clean, modern rooms to accommodate any size group. They are conveniently located near the Big South Fork and popular Brimstone. If you like to camp, there are plenty of camping facilities available with access to the park, room for your horses with full hookups, amenities and activities throughout the year. Take a look at the campground information on page 6 to help you choose the destination that is right for you. Come spend a weekend, week, or plan your special gathering in the Big South Fork today!

For a real getaway, Laurel Fork Rustic Retreat offers twelve spacious, luxurious, comfortable vacation homes/cabins in a gated community bordering the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area (BSFNRRA). Getting away to spend quality time with family and friends in the great outdoors is what a lot of folks dream about. But it doesn’t have to be a dream. Within a short drive of Knoxville, Nashville, Chattanooga, and other major cities, your family and friends can rent one of these grand chalets which are located just minutes

from hiking and horseback trails. Recently, we and two of our sons’ friends - Jacob and Bryce spent the weekend at “Hanging it Up”, one of the luxurious chalets in the Laurel Fork Rustic Retreat community. Each cabin is spacious and surrounded by three to five acres of woodland, some with magnificent overlooks. “Hanging it Up” is a fantastic cabin with a lot of character. It has a beautiful granite island in the wonderfully stocked kitchen ideal for entertaining which I (Annie) really enjoyed. The boys had a wonderful time playing outside on the swings. We built a campfire in the fire pit out back and made s’mores one night. We all soaked in the hot tub and gazed at the canopy of stars overhead. The boys also delighted in the walks down the country road to the basketball hoop where they played basketball for hours, including some serious “around the world”. The portable corn hole game that Uncle Brendan and Tante Inge got them for their birthday this year was perfect for out front of “Hanging it Up”. The great country lanes are quite suitable for hiking, walking, and even bike riding. One can ride or walk about 2.5 miles from a cabin to scenic Hwy. 294 without worries about traffic or wild dogs. The route is lined with pastures, cows, horses, and rolling hills. What heaven! I had the opportunity to enjoy a little down time in the screened-in porch where I read a good book and watched in wonder at the abundant bird feeders where birds and squirrels were dining. The cabin’s high ceilings and stunning windows opened up to the trees, wildlife, and the beautiful blue sky. Each room was decorated to perfection. The master bedroom had a blue bird theme with a comfortable built in window settee to curl up and read or sleep. The upstairs loft offered lots of enjoyment for the boys, as they played foosball, watched TV and a movie, and just enjoyed the cabin lifestyle. The cabin has tile and hardwood floors throughout with delightful beds dressed in high thread count linens. You can enjoy satellite TV throughout the cabin. I was even able to check my email, as “Hanging it Up” has wireless internet. This was true luxury and a totally relaxing weekend. Our hosts, Inez and Jack Troxell retired from nursing and the park service with a vision to turn their family land into their dream retirement home and to develop this amazing piece of property into a great place for others to enjoy as well. They offer twelve gorgeous cabins through their rental program that folks have built as their dream homes over the last ten years. These vacation homes/cabins rival any cabin or chalet in Gatlinburg and the Great Smoky Mountains. As an added bonus there is no congestion here, no smog, and the rentals are very affordable. Each cabin has its own personality and run anywhere from $125.00 to $219.00 per night with cabin capacity ranging from 6-12 people - all dependent upon the number of bedrooms and amenities. Many of the cabins have multiple night discounts, highlighted on the easy to navigate website - www.laurelfork.com. There is a lot to do at Laurel Fork Rustic Retreat and the great outdoors of the BSFNRRA including great hikes, such as the Yellow Cliff Trailhead for riders and hikers which connects to some of the other great Big South Fork trails. Even if you don’t hike or trail ride, what a great way to relax, immerse in God’s beauty around you, soak in the hot tub, and enjoy the simple lifestyle with family and friends. Come for a weekend retreat, a special occasion, or book a week in the Big South Fork and let the Troxell family spoil you with their wonderful southern hospitality. Bring a group of friends to help share in the experience. You’ll be glad you did. For reservations, call 423-286-5135 or log onto: www.laurelfork.com.

Dining at Big South ForkDining in the Big South Fork can be a lot of fun. There are many great places to eat, but some of the best are a bit off the beaten track or hidden in a general store. One of my family’s favorites is the Rock-a-Billy Café & Soda Fountain, the 50’s diner in the Cumberland Mountain General Store (CMGS). I love to shop, so this is half the fun and the attraction; however, deep down inside I know I am going to have a great burger and a milkshake. CMGS is an authentic old fashioned general store with the big wrap around porch, filled with lots of antiques, collectibles, furniture, and home decorative items. One of the biggest treasures is in the back of the store. There you will find the wonderful, nostalgic 50’s diner serving up homemade milkshakes, juicy all beef hamburgers, and onion rings or French fries at the old counter lined with diner stools from yesteryear. This place is fun and boy the motorcyclists love this place as a stop off. The ladies love to come for a day outing and explore the antique stores along the way. There is plenty of BBQ in the Big South Fork with the newest Pork Ryan’s located just off of Hwy. 127 and Hwy. 52, adjacent to Henbos BP Station. Jim Ryan and his famous pig are offering slow hickory smoked barbecue chicken, pork and ribs with all the homemade sides. Their convenient drive through makes it easy to call in an order and pick it up to take back to the horse camp or cabin. The Garden Grill is the newest sit down restaurant in downtown Jamestown, behind the new, elaborate Union Bank. The Garden Grill offers family dining,

daily specials, and an awesome salad bar. They are open seven days a week. Prestons Steakhouse in the Big South Fork is the place for steak. Folks love the rustic décor, exposed log beams, and stone fireplace making the atmosphere very intimate and cozy. They have a great selection of grilled or broiled seafood,

wonderful appetizers, Tex-Mex and some delicious salads. If you are looking for a unique experience full of character and old world charm, Bacara’s is the place to impress a date or to celebrate a great day out on the trails. Owner, Kurt Schlegel offers excellent German food, including Wiener schnitzel, German noodles, spaetzle, and an excellent cowboy platter with grilled steak, potatoes, and roasted vegetables. Bacara’s atmosphere is great. Folks from as far away as a two hours drive come to Bacara’s for a night of fun, good food, and gemuetlichkeit! Their Oktoberfest is a tradition for many. German food, authentic German music, and specialty dishes like sauerbraten, apple strudel and braised red cabbage (rotkraut) are served. Oktoberfest is being held October 1, 2, 8, & 9, 2010. Make a weekend of it. Stay at one of our bed and breakfasts like my favorite, Grey Gables Bed and Breakfast Inn and let innkeeper, Linda, spoil you in her Victorian home. Linda serves a wonderful, hearty, country breakfast and is known for her magnificent meals and spacious surroundings in

historic Rugby. There are also cabins, horse camps or a campground nearby. Come enjoy the beauty of fall. Happy Trails!

Established 1919

McCreary County located in the northern region of the Big South Fork area is steeped in heritage and the McCreary County Record has been there to document the passage of time since the fall of 1919 – one of the oldest established newspapers in the state of Kentucky. It was started by the Bell Press of Oneida, TN to better serve the residents of the McCreary County area. They installed the plant in the pool room of a building owned by the Stearns Coal & Lumber Company who later bought the paper in 1920. The paper’s first editor was Mrs. K. W. Dyas. On December 6, 1922, Louisville Post writer Ralph Coghlan had this to say of Mrs. Dyas’ work: “Another example of the Stearns benevolent monarchism is the McCreary County Record, the only newspaper published in the county. This paper is ably, interestingly, and sometimes brilliantly edited by Mrs. K. W. Dyas, and it is financed by the Stearns Company. It is fashioned after the best standards, and it is in no sense a trade journal. While its policy is, of course, sympathetic with its backers, its news columns report the county’s routine with fairness and with a spirit of ethical journalism.”

Mrs. Dyas was succeeded by Mary Elizabeth Powell for a time. Then in late 1928, Cecil T. Williams of Somerset, KY purchased the paper. This purchase led to the affiliation of McCreary County Record as a sister publication to the Commonwealth-Journal in Somerset, KY. Over the many years, the paper has been graced by the presence of a number of editors such as C. W. Hume, who served as editor and publisher for several years. He was succeeded by Patrick Thomas, Jeff Kerr, Virginia Davis, and Ken Shmidheiser. Much could and has been said of the Stearns Coal and Lumber Company through the years which is possibly why McCreary County Record adopted this motto along the way: “Pledged to no party’s arbitrary sway, we hew to the lines of truth and edification of our people and let the chips fall where they may.”

Big South Fork Area AttractionsThe McCreary County Record is currently owned by NHI of Birmingham, AL. Jack McNeely, current publisher of the McCreary County Record is proud of the heritage of the publication and its dedication to serving the people of the area. He said, “We are pleased to be able to continue a long tradition of fairly, accurately and independently informing the citizens of McCreary County about the news that affects their lives. With the advent of the internet, we have expanded our reporting to include our web site www.mccrearyrecord.com where readers across the world now have instant access to news from back home. We are proud to continue the McCreary County Record’s long tradition well into the 21st century.”

The McCreary County Record has never missed a deadline, in spite of many tragedies through the years. Starting in 1928, the paper began keeping bound volumes. These books have survived two fires and are appreciated by genealogists and historians for their content. Their office is located at 48 N. Main Street in Whitley City, KY and the paper is available online at www.mccrearyrecord.com. You may reach them by phone at 606.376.5357. (Information provided by the McCreary County Record.)

The Big South Fork Scenic Railway (BSFSRY) located in Stearns, KY is yet another historic gem available to share with the general public. At BSFSRY you can experience one of the last remaining company towns complete with an operational railroad, and a reconstructed coal camp which was originally built in the early 1900’s. Over the 16 mile round trip on the route known as the “Route of the Painted Rocks”, the railroad descends 600 feet into the scenic river gorge. There are spectacular vistas, lush vegetation and free flowing streams spread all along the route. April through October, the K & T Special makes regular departures on the 3 hour journey, passing through the remnants of the mining camp of Worley (one of the largest in it’s heyday). A few foundations are all that remain of the original structures. However, the National Park Service (NPS) has installed interpretive panels that can be viewed from the train. The train makes a stop at Blue Heron Coal Mining Camp, another NPS interpretive site where visitors will see “ghost structures”, visual, and oral history exhibits. Here you can walk into the face of the mine, as well as, cross over the river on the tipple bridge. Your ticket on the K & T Special also includes admission to the McCreary County Museum (www.mccrearymuseum.com) located within walking distance of The Depot and bluegrass music ½ hour before each train departs.

The Big South Fork Scenic Railway offers several additional experiences such as a Cab Ride, Caboose Rental, a Rivers & Rails Package, and Saturday Pass. There are special event rides in October and December. In October, you can enjoy the Haunted Hollow Express and the Trick or Treat Train for Tots. Then, in December, be sure to enjoy the Santa Express or the new nighttime excursion – “Painted Rocks & Twinkle Train”. Learn more about the different packages and event

information on their website: www.bsfsry.com or call them at 800-462-5664. Keep in mind that the excursion cars range from enclosed to open air. It’s extremely important that you dress accordingly for the weather. Passengers are seated on a first come, first seated basis. Rain or shine, the trains depart. It’s also important to note that departures are on Eastern Time. So, ALL ABOARD!

Further south, located in the picturesque “Valley of the Three Forks” – Pall Mall, TN is the home place of WWI hero, Sgt. Alvin C. York. Sgt. York is not only known for his famous captures during the war, but he has long been known for his efforts on the home front to provide adequate education and educational facilities for the people of this area. The new Tennessee Trailblazers Tour will include the Sergeant York Historic Site, as well as, nearby Cordell Hull Birthplace and Museum State Park in Byrdstown, TN. (For those that don’t

know, Cordell Hull was a past recipient of a Nobel Peace Prize, former longest serving Secretary of State, and is known as “The Father of the United Nations”.) The Tour will emphasize the rustic background and exemplary lives of these two men, each of hardy pioneer stock born in a log cabin. It is the hope of Tour founders to draw visitors into a renewed exploration of the area, using new directional and interpretive

signage, audiovisual aids and a 30-minute audio tour that links two Tennessee State Parks – Cordell Hull Birthplace and Museum in Byrdstown and the Sergeant York Historic Site near Jamestown.

“The Tennessee Trailblazers Tour seeks to enhance visitors’ experience through its focus on a tourism cluster of Fentress, Pickett and adjacent counties while encouraging visitors to plan a three-day weekend or a “staycation” for traditional day visitors,” said Claudia Johnson, Executive Director of the Sgt. York Patriotic Foundation. Johnson said

both parks serve as gateway attractions to the Big South Fork National River and Recreational Area, with Historic Rugby, Dale Hollow Lake, wineries, marinas, riding stables, bed and breakfast homes, and other tourism businesses enhance the region’s offerings to travelers. If you would like to learn more about Sgt. York or Cordell Hull, please visit the websites maintained by their Foundation/Friends groups.

Sgt. York: www.sgtyork.orgCordell Hull: www.FriendsofCordellHull.org It is worthy to note that the first shot fired and first fatality during the Civil War in Tennessee occurred at Travisville which is situated near Forbus, TN (near Pall Mall). A marker now stands near that fateful location. Numerous local museums dot the region and the local libraries often have excellent facilities allowing people to explore the vast local history and genealogical information. Other communities such as Rugby share what it was like to live in the area during days gone by through museums, historic

buildings, and so much more. Come explore what it was like to live in this rugged region. It’s unlike any other.

Every progressive county has

an active Chamber. Walt Page and his fine team keep the county on the forefront of economic and tourism development. They endeavor to make visitors feel welcome. They work with the local businesses to insure a vibrant retail economy, and with educators and leaders of the community to give students and adults a chance to better themselves through their leadership programs and learning more about the community. Their trails are as varied as the terrain and their professional team offers the beginner and the most experienced the ride of a lifetime.

Many outdoor enthusiasts visiting the Big South Fork come in for the day to rent the new Kawasaki Teryx or a Rhino and explore the trails with a guide or solo. This is a great activity for families and friends, and the visitation at Brimstone has grown year after year, bringing over 15,000 visitors to this wonderful destination. There are also 30 miles of great dirt bike trails, highlighted in the all new 2010 Brimstone Trail Map. This map gives detailed information on all of the trails, places of interest, and landmarks; helping you plan your memorable trip. Erika Schmelter and her Dad, owner Mark Love, love what they do and are passionate about every mile of trail. They endeavor to insure that each visitor has an awesome time - with safety in mind. The vision for Brimstone began in 2005. It has grown tenfold due to the popularity of the sport, great repeat business, and the word of mouth advertising around the country. It seems that everyone in the OHV and ATV world

is talking about Brimstone. Erika’s smile is contagious and she is a joy to be around. She is knowledgeable, helpful, courteous, and very professional. Brimstone’s trails will take you to some gorgeous overlooks and bluff views, geological wonders, magnificent vegetation, and wildlife. In the spring, the redbuds, dogwoods and spring flowers will amaze you. Fall is dramatic with the patchwork splashes of reds, yellows, oranges, and all the various hues. Every visitor that views the vistas in the fall will know that God is in control of this wondrous blanket of color. Brimstone is located in the town of Huntsville, TN. They offer cabin rentals for those seeking accommodation for a night, weekend or week (or longer). The Cabins of Elk Run also offer cozy new log cabins next to the trails or the popular Grand Vista Hotel is minutes away for those seeking a comfortable, clean hotel with breakfast, Wi-Fi, phone service, and an in-ground pool. There are lots of restaurants to serve you a delicious meal, including Preston’s Steakhouse, the place to go for steak in the Big South Fork. Fireside Restaurant is a family owned restaurant that offers daily specials, and awesome fried green tomatoes. Be sure to visit the Harrow Road Café in historic Rugby. They serve excellent fish and chips, and other English fare.

Brimstone prides itself in its two signature events, the White Knuckle event during Memorial Weekend and Brimstone’s Side by Side SXS Round-Up in the fall. These functions are very popular, bringing in thousands of outdoor enthusiasts. Many compete in their sport, enjoy the music, eat delicious food, and hang out with like minded adventurers! These popular events have also grown in the last years and Brimstone continues to add to each to make them more entertaining! The White Knuckle event has the “King of the Mountain” - a fun and challenging event. This year they expect to attract more than 5,000 OHV riders from multiple states and countries to enjoy the family-friendly atmosphere and competitive outlet. Branded as the “hold on tight” event of the year, the White Knuckle event attracts off-road enthusiasts from all over North America. It is poised to become the “Woodstock of ATV and SXS Events” going into its fourth year with off-road enthusiasts attendance doubling each year. The event will take place on May 28-30, 2010 at Brimstone Recreation. There will be guided rides with local trail masters, kid’s zone, and a moonshine run. Additional activities include mud bogs, sled pulls, ladies dash for cash, and pole bending. Friday will kick off with easy, moderate, and difficult guided rides, and end with a meet and greet in the Huntsville Town Square. Saturday will start off with the competitive events and end with a live concert by Rhett Akins at the Half Cabin Event area. The Moonshine Run will bring the weekend to a close on Sunday evening. And don’t forget the manufacturer demo areas where you can get a feel for the latest machines from Yamaha, Kawasaki, and Can-Am. For more information about the White Knuckle Event 2010 please visit www.whiteknuckleevent.com or www.BrimstoneRecreation.com for information about Brimstone and the surrounding area.

Long Branch Lakes

A majestic, gated community sits high atop the hills of the Cumberland Plateau. It is quickly becoming known as Tennessee’s best kept retirement secret, Long Branch Lakes - a premier, gated lifestyle community. Recently featured in “Where to Retire” magazine, Long Branch Lakes (LBL) offers a high quality of life in a picturesque setting of abundant nature, great amenities, Bill Dance Signature Lakes, an Equestrian Center with full time, on-property equestrian managers, and activities within a community setting. LBL has been diligently carving, molding, and sculpting this remarkable community for nearly seven years now. Owners Edmond Cash, Andy Cash, and Rick Klewein’s desire to give residents a spectacular place to call home and their steadfast meticulous work and vision are paying off. Folks from all around the country seeking to downsize but not sacrifice their quality of living are finding out about the magic of LBL and the wonderful assets of Tennessee country living. This top notch community has been developed for nature lovers and offers an ideal home for families who are planning for retirement, buying a second or weekend home, or folks interested in relocation. There is something for everyone, and the choices include homesites, the new Trout Hill Condominiums, and the Bunk Houses - ten home sites overlooking gorgeous pastures and vistas in LBL’s Equestrian Center.

Since the printing of the 2010 Fall Creek Falls Visitor Guide, much has happened at LBL. The long awaited General Store is nearing completion and hopes are to have it operational by summer 2010. The Long Branch Lakes General Store will offer a community spirit and a gathering place for residents and visitors alike. It will be the heart of the community. The General Store will offer provisions such as milk, meats, dairy and staples needed to cook wonderful meals for family and guests. It will also offer the daily necessities such as freshly brewed coffee and tea. The General Store will also have signature homemade jellies and jams, local produce, gift items, and local crafts. The full-service restaurant will make hanging out for lunch, dinner, or one of the many planned community events such as local music, art events, guest speakers, and get togethers part of the wonderful LBL lifestyle. It will also be a great place to get an ice cream for you and your grandchildren after lazing by the in-ground lakeside pool - one of Long Branch Lakes’ wonderful resort-style amenities.

Some other exciting news is the progress of the Trout Hill Condominiums - 64 luxury condominiums for residents desiring the lake-side living of LBL without the maintenance and worry of a much larger living space. The Trout Hill Condominiums have their own entrance surrounded by woodlands and lakes, offering such pleasures as a pool, recreation area and a lakefront dock for fishing and canoe and kayak launching; plus use of the full amenities of the LBL sprawling 5,000 acres development. At press time, LBL is working on pouring the second floor of the Trout Hill Condominiums and hopes to have the first residents moved in by the end of summer 2010. Several condominiums have been sold and these 2 and 3 bedroom residences are sure to be popular.

LBL’s Equestrian Center managers, Lamar and Vanessa Wright, bring sunshine and experience to those LBL residents looking to enjoy their horses or adopt a horse to ride the over thirty miles of trails that allow the novice or experienced rider the chance to explore the majestic beauty

of Long Branch Lakes. Lamar and Vanessa feel blessed to offer such wonderful equestrian quarters, including a new 100’ x 200’ outdoor arena, new paddocks, and luscious pastures for the horses to graze. For many residents, the allure of horseback riding was just a distant dream; but at LBL, residents are finally able to fulfill their dreams with experienced professionals to teach them the basics within the comforts of their own community. Lamar and Vanessa’s knowledge is comprehensive in both English and Western disciplines. They are there to help with professional instruction for riders, and horses; all in these superior custom-built facilities. This dynamic duo is very passionate about horses and is extremely excited to be a part of this remarkable equestrian haven.

LBL takes pride in getting to know both residents’ and property owner’s wishes and desires for the community. They encourage them to express what is on their minds. This input will help to create the best possible community for all of the residents. There are over twenty five houses that have been built or are in the construction phase to date. Many folks will be living in their spectacular homes by year’s end. Soccer fields, basketball hoops, volleyball, tennis and badminton courts compliment this development. Their signature, in-ground lakeside heated pool is a great addition to the resort-style amenities. Custom built log pavilions with custom stone fireplaces are strategically placed to offer outdoor family and community areas that can be used for gatherings and entertainment. Log lined streets, rustic lampposts, flower boxes, and the newly opened Discovery Center offer a quality, pristine community in Middle Tennessee.

Bill Dance, one of America’s top fishermen, Bassmaster, and superstar in the fishing world, has teamed up with LBL to build his Bill Dance Signature Lakes in the community. These lakes offer trophy fish habitats that serve the serious and recreational fisherman alike and work in harmony and balance with the surrounding land use. The vast investments made by LBL to stock and professionally manage the community’s lakes and ponds, coupled with the expertise and knowledge of Bill Dance and his organization excite both the novice and avid fishermen who reside at LBL. Of course, a resident can enjoy the many lakes at LBL in other ways, simply relaxing lakeside and reading a book, kayaking, bird watching, skipping rocks or just enjoying a hot summer day with a picnic from the General Store.

Come enjoy the activities, the grandeur of LBL, and see why this premier community is being talked about in the media, by retirees and families seeking a quality, nature filled lifestyle. Become part of their Saddlebag Newsletter mailing list, by emailing your email address to [email protected], and find out all the new happenings at LBL and the surrounding area. Long Branch Lakes also can be visited during their Discovery Weekends (see dates on website) at 2350 Long Branch Road in Spencer, TN. Pork Ryan’s is a new barbecue restaurant and caterer in the Big South Fork. Jim Ryan has

a fun personality which can keep you on your toes and laughing. Laughter is one of the best medicines and folks love to be around happy

people. Jim found his way back to Jamestown after spending many years in a career in Florida, building businesses and working towards retirement. When Jim and his wife

finally retired to Jamestown, he realized that retirement was not what it was cracked up to be, and he needed to get back into something. Loving to cook, and delighting some of his friends and clients in Florida with his barbecue wagon, he decided to take the barbecue that everyone raved about and make a business out of it. Spending the first months with his friend and colleague, Greg, pulling the Pork Ryan Pigmobile around, he barbecued for parties, special events, and festivals around the region and gained quite a following. Their slow cooked barbecue ribs, pork, chicken and their signature bratwursts, along with all the homemade sides, has their loyal customers following Pork Ryan’s around Jamestown. Cumberland Mountain General Store (CMGS) is the best place in the Big South

Fork for a delicious, juicy, hand formed hamburger. I just love their ‘50 style diner called the “Rock-a-Billy Café”. It will

remind you of those wonderful days gone by, when diners were the place to be and to be seen. I have always enjoyed those wonderful stools. It takes me back to my Kresge days in Wayne, MI where I enjoyed sitting on my stool and ordering some French fries and a Coke while out riding my bike up to Michigan Avenue. Rock-a-Billy Café is a great place for a tour bus group to come and enjoy a great meal, listen to the oldies, and browse through the goodies in the wonderful old country store. CMGS is located on scenic Hwy. 127, just north of I-40 and is a favorite stop going on the way to BSFNRRA and Pickett State Park. It is also a hotspots during the frenzy of the Hwy. 127 Yard Sale each August. CMGS has an awesome selection of antiques, collectibles, handcrafted quilts, primitive furniture, old implements, nostalgic home furnishings, screened flour sacks and so much more. Come in, give a friendly wave, and say “hello” to Ron and Lana and take a look around. Take a peak at their store online at

www.CumberlandMountainGeneralStore.com or give them a call today at 931-863-3880. Always be sure to call for their hours in the summer and fall because their hours vary.

for! Their hand cut, country, Idaho potatoes compliment the breakfast dishes that folks from all over come to eat. This is a place that makes you feel at home. Heather Thomas, owner, makes each person feel welcome. She has many regulars that visit daily for a bottomless cup of coffee or their signature fruit parfaits, burrito quesadillas to go, or to sit down and have a hearty country breakfast. Some of Coffee Time’s signature lunch dishes include their Crazy Chicken Salad and delicious Taco Salad. Coffee Time is generally only open for breakfast and lunch, but on Friday nights they have their Fish Fry featuring an excellent Pollock served with handmade coleslaw, special recipe hush puppies, fries, and corn fritters. Swing by Coffee Time and give your cook a break. Enjoy a great breakfast or lunch next time you are out in the Big South Fork area. Coffee Time can be contacted at 931-863-5577.

Ron’s Restaurant & Pizzaria is the best place in the Big South Fork for pizza and

breadsticks. I don’t know about you, but there is nothing like fresh, hand-tossed pizza dough covered with natural ingredients, high

quality mozzarella cheese, and lots of meat, vegetables, and for me - I must have my banana peppers. Ron’s Restaurant & Pizzaria is a hit with families. The excellent pizza, breadsticks, lasagna, and all-you-can eat salad bar (for those dieting) is affordable comfort food. Ron Beaty is no stranger to the restaurant business. He’s been tossing pizzas and a restaurateur for over 23 years. After retiring from Florida several years ago, he decided to open his own place, catering to the families of Fentress County with his family atmosphere. Every restaurant has their signature dish. Ron’s Restaurant & Pizzaria is known for its superb homemade Stromboli’s, oozing with cheese and a homemade slow cooked meat sauce. Need a sandwich for on the go or a picnic? Their submarine

sandwiches are way better than the chain store sandwiches, and their all beef, hand formed hamburgers are dripping with flavor. Weekends at Ron’s Place offer grilled steaks, extensive salad bar, and delicious baked potatoes. Ron’s family atmosphere is evident with the Clarkrange Buffalo’s school colors, and the big screen TV’s and monitors tuned to the local games and the beloved UT Vols. Come over and kick back, watch a game or two, and enjoy the food and the atmosphere. Their friendly wait staff and delicious food will have you coming back for more. Take out pizza and delivery within a certain area is available. Call Ron’s at 931-863-8227. Bon Appétit!

Day Trips to Dale Hollow LakeDale Hollow Lake (DHL) neighbors the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area on the southwest presenting a quick getaway opportunity for those visiting the area or an excellent retirement opportunity for those wishing to retire close to the trails and the water. DHL is renowned as the home of the world record smallmouth bass (and several of the top 10 record holders of the species) offering world class fishing for smallmouth bass, as well as other type of fish. Fall, winter and spring are popular times to enjoy the sport with winter fishing gaining in popularity due to the advent of more weather resistant outerwear. DHL was named as one of the “10 great places to go to float your houseboat” by USA TODAY in 2006. Sunset Marina & Resort offers a wide variety of watercraft rentals – including houseboats, excellent dining in their floating restaurant or patio area, lakeview accommodations, and so much more. Tom Allen and his staff invite you to stop by and visit their facilities to learn more about what makes their full service marina special. If you would like a sneak peak, you can visit them online at www.SunsetMarina.com. They can also be reached toll free at 1-800-760-8550. In 2010, Sunset Marina has 10 special events planned! Among the list is the June 11-20 Dale Hollow Lake Poker Run (www.DaleHollowLakePokerRun.com) to help benefit the Nashville Area Ronald McDonald House. Wrapping up the event will be one of Chef Zoom’s excellent spreads featuring fried fish and all the fixins. They will also have corn hole games and live music to punctuate the afternoon. August 21 will be their 2nd Annual Crab Boil. This was a huge success last year. To make sure you have a place at the table, be sure to reserve your tickets in advance. Check their website for a complete list of events. Star Point Resort is another excellent full service marina on DHL, also participating in the Dale Hollow Lake Poker Run. Located at the end of Hwy. 325W, the resort is relatively quiet and secluded in a picturesque park-like setting. Long time owner, Tommye Copeland worked diligently through the years to create a place where people would love to come, relax, and enjoy life. Her labor of love is now in the capable hands of her nephew, Nathan Copeland and his family. Several fishing tournaments are hosted out of the resort each year with the fall Dale Hollow Bass Classic alternating between Star Point Resort and Sunset Marina & Resort. The Walmart BFL Tournament usually makes a stop there each

spring with one of the Mountain Division tournaments. Several other tournaments are scheduled each year (usually in the spring) to benefit various organizations throughout the region. To learn more about Star Point Resort or to find out more about upcoming tournaments and events, visit their website at www.StarPointResort.com or call them toll free at 888-STAR-PNT or 931.864.3115.

Maple Hill RV Campground and Cabins is the newest full service campground in the region. Mark and Audrey Asprogiannis fell in love with the area and moved their children, Sarah and James, from North Carolina for a better quality of life. They bought Maple Hill Campground that year with a vision of turning it into a premier campground with 4 new cabins for rent (1 handicap accessible). It is conveniently located between Big South Fork and Dale Hollow Lake. The campground has 9 pull-through sites for RV’s (25’ x 65’) with full hook-ups, trailer hook-ups, 50/30/20 amp electric, 22 level sites, free WI-FI, and they can arrange horse or fishing guide services, tour information, and can help you plan your day out in the region. They have a clean laundry area, dump station, and pets are welcome on a leash. Cable TV is available with a pavilion and kitchen for groups or family reunions. The family lives on site to insure that the guests are taken care of and that friendly, professional service can be given to their guests to insure a comfortable and memorable visit. Visit Maple Hill RV Campground and Cabins on-line to view their facility and call them today to book your outdoor vacation at www.maplehillrv.com or phone Mark or Audrey at 931-879-3025.

Tennessee Recreational Properties LLC (TRP) has been specializing in premier equestrian and recreation properties in the Big South Fork (BSF) region for many years. One can arguably say that the founders, Ed Wiley and Jerry Gernt, have had this vision for the region for a long time. They are seeing the fruits of their labor, and that of their professional team, come to fruition. TRP has several gated communities to offer, each presenting something for most everyone. They do more than specialize in the BSF area real estate, they actually live, ride, and recreate here, so you are getting expert, honest, professional advice. Their properties are in the heart of the “Trail Riding Capital of the Southeast” with its hundreds of miles of trails for horseback riding, hiking, and outdoor recreation with affordable land and a very low tax rate compared to the urban areas. The Highlands at Big South Fork was one of their first gated equestrian developments featuring paved roads, gorgeous bluff views, and spacious land around the amazing homesites that have been built with direct access into the BSFNRRA. River Park, Hitchin’ Post, Hunter’s Ridge, Flat Rock Preserve, Nichol Creek Farm, and Island in the Sky offer a little different terrain, amenities, and layout to appeal to equestrian and outdoor lovers. Sue Neff, broker of TRP and Leslie Helm, agent, specialize in these properties and more. They love horses, ride horses, and can guide their guests - those wishing to retire or relocate to the ideal piece of property that would be best suited for their needs and wishes. TRP is a firm believer of doing what is right for the customer, conserving and preserving God’s natural assets, and creating a masterpiece within each canvas that they develop; creating different environments for those wishing to LIVE and to enjoy their LIFE. Let TRP show you around “The Big South Fork Country” and take you out on the trails through their sister company, East Fork Stables. Come down for a weekend and stay at East Fork or one of the other TRP properties. Time it with one of East Fork’s or one of the other BSF events and really discover the friendly people, the beautiful region, and the lasting memories. www.bigsouthforktrp.com • 866-731-7268
