Poison ivy issticky business Q: The poison ivy in our

natural area is really taking over. While walking through the

woods, I must have come in contact with the nasty vine. Even though I washed the clothes I was wearing, I still got a rash on my ankles the next time I put my gardening pants

on. How do you deal with this?

A: The sap of poison ivy, which contains the oil, urushiol,

will stick to more than just your skin.

It will stick to garden tools, camping equipment, clothing and even shoe laces for months. Washing the urushiol out of clothes is diffi cult because the oil is not very soluble in water. Wash contaminated clothes in a strong soap like Fells Naptha laundry bar. Rinse with several changes of water, and rinse the machine between loads. Do not put your gardening pants in the dryer, but allow them to dry on the line for several days in the hot sun. To get the sap off of your skin, there are specially

measures 8½ inches square. It appears to be trimmed in gold leaf. On the back is written

“Limoges France Ahrenfeldt Limoges pour Reizenstein,” and below that, “Pitts-burgh-Alleghe-ny.” Can you tell me the value of these plates?

A: You have some very

pretty plates. They were manufactured by the Ahrenfeldt Porcelain Works in Limoges, France, likely between World War I and II. They are recog-nized worldwide for fi ne-quality decorative dinnerware and hollowware. Collectors gener-ally focus on the chocolate pots and vases made by the company. The plates you own would likely sell in the $15 to $30 range, each.

at the Haven Hospice Attic event

in Gainesville. You advised me to have the symbol on the base transcribed. I sent an image to the curator of the Asian Collection at the Harn Museum of Art, Jason Steuber, and he tells me it translates to “Kawamoto Hansuke.” I am not able to fi nd anything similar to my particular vase using the websites he sent

Q: I know that it is time to fertilize my St. Augustine

grass for the fall. When I went shopping for fertilizer at my local discount store, I noticed that the usual bag I buy is not at a discount at all. In fact, it seems really expensive. What is going on here?

A: You are right. UF/IFAS Extension recommends

fertilization for our lawn grasses during September to keep the grass healthy and growing through the fall. If you choose a fertilizer with 50 percent of the nitrogen in a slow-release form, it will give the grass a slow feed through-out the rest of the year.

You will want to apply no more than 1 pound of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet of lawn grass. If you were using a 10-0-10 fertilizer, you would apply 10 pounds of actual fertilizer, or if you choose the 15-0-15, you

would apply 6.5 pounds of fertilizer per 1,000 square feet of lawn. It is critical to really measure your turf area so you know how much to apply. Too much fertilizer can lead to cultural problems like thatch and insect issues. Also, the more you fertilize, the more you have to mow . Slow-release nitro-gen will give a slower feed to the grass, prevent leaching and help prevent pollution of our ground and surface waters.

Fertilizer prices are tied to petroleum prices, so you can understand why you have seen a leap in cost. Also, marketing

plays a big part in the cost of the fertilizer products . You may have noticed an upswing in primetime commercials for fertilizers, as well. Researchers at the University of Florida IFAS Center for Landscape Conser-vation and Ecology have found that consumers are more willing to pay premium prices for fertilizers that are labeled as ecofriendly, organic or pet friendly.

By shopping at commercial suppliers and small feed stores, you will fi nd lower prices than those at your usual store. Fertilizer suppliers such as

GreenSouth, John Deere Landscapes and Growers fertilizer normally deal with professionals, but they are open to the public as well. They may not be as conveniently located as your local big box store with the same hours, but they have many different types of fertil-izer to choose from.

Q: I called a roofer because I had a leak in

my replaced roof. The roof is only 2 years old, but the roofer told me the shingles were not nailed correctly and that my warranty would not be any good. He gave me a price to replace all the shingles and to get a new warranty. Is this something that happens often? Should I replace a 2-year-old roof?

A: There are a lot of things that can cause

a new, or mostly new, roof to leak.

Improper fl ashings can cause leaks. They are found at roof penetrations such as: roof vents, a chim-ney, plumbing vents or anything that penetrates the new shingles.

Leaks are especially hard to fi nd where a lower roofl ine, such as a garage roof, meets an upper vertical wall, such as a second-story wall. The wa-

ter comes off the roof during a heavy rain and is trapped against the vertical wall. A well-placed piece of adhesive-

backed rubber sheeting along the lower roof and up the wall will keep water out of the home.

Your estimator told you the shingles were not nailed correctly, and this can happen when the installer is in a hurry. Each nail, and there are four per shingle, must be placed on the asphalt adhesive tab just above the watermark, and the nail has to be straight, not installed at an angle. A straight nail applies the full force of the nail head evenly on the asphalt tab. A nail head set at an angle will cut

through the tab damaging the shingle, and it may even come loose. During a windy rainstorm, water can penetrate under the loose shingle to the damaged opening where a leak begins to form.

The roofer is right. The warranty from the manufacturer is no longer valid if the shingles have been nailed improperly. If you only have a small leak, consider having the shingles repaired rather than replaced. Loose or improperly nailed shingles can be repaired and resealed at a reduced cost and still give you years of protection from the elements, but there will not be a manufacturer’s warranty.

Jensen Ackles of “Supernatural” and his actress wife, Danneel Harris, put

their gated home in Mal-ibu up for sale at $6.995 million, and in four days they had a buyer.
