FOREWORD

It’s hard to believe that thirty years have passed since the members of Lipscomb’s class of 1970 marched down the steps of Alumni Auditorium, diplomas in hand. Sometimes, we think we can almost hear again the slamming of those metal locker doors. And who could not remember the sounds (and smells!) which emitted from Burton Gym? How many times were you greeted at the high school cafeteria by Jason, the giant black poodle? Can you also recall receiving greetings (in the form of traffic tickets) from Jonesy, Lipscomb’s own version of Deputy Barney Fife? And of course, you can still remember who sat beside you in Acuff Chapel all those years, can’t you? (Hint, we were seated in alphabetical order!) And who does not recall those first few years of the “mighty Mustangs” charging onto the football field?

Our world has seen many changes, as have our personal lives, but those memories of “The Way We Were” continue to bring us together.

The planning of this reunion has brought back lots of memories and has been a very enjoyable experience for us. We hope that you enjoy this event and the memories you will take from it as much as we have enjoyed making it happen for you.

Expected Occupation: I always wanted to be an airline stewardess, but I was too short, although good things come in small packages. Or I wanted to be an interior designer or college French teacher like Miss Lowe.

What REALLY Happened: My current occupation is interior designer. It was a long, hard road but I was very determined.

Children: My beautiful children are Jonas, 1971; Seth, 1972; Ann, 1974. Seth is married to Lauren. They are expecting their first child in February 2001. (They are all fortunate to be alive. I could have killed them when they were teenagers, but out of the goodness of my heart, I allowed them to live. I also remind them of this frequently.)

Favorite Vacation: I had so many favorites it is hard to select just one. The most recent favorite vacation was going to Williamsburg, VA and Busch Gardens this past May. My sister, Julie, and brother, Chuck, his wife Wendy and I took Mother and Daddy to Williamsburg for their 50th wedding anniversary. It was very special. The roller coasters at Busch Gardens were great.

Most Unusual occurrence: Having a dream and it coming true.

Highlight of life: Besides my children and my little black dog, Joey, I would have to say that I absolutely love living in Destin, Florida. Anyone is welcome to come and visit.

“For 7 years I kept the Study Hall at DLHS. Since then I have been working at the Lipscomb University bookstore. My most memorable experience while at DLHS was the morning all of the decorated pumpkins had disappeared…one of the security guards had fed them to his pigs!”

“I taught at DLHS from 1958 to 1979 and from 1984 to 1985. I taught Bible, speech, math, economics and sponsored Homiletics and NFL. In 1979 I became the Executive Director of Happy Hills Boys Ranch where I stayed until 1984. Two memorable events come to mind while at DLHS...the beginning of the Homiletics Club in 1965 and the dedication of the Mizpah to me in 1974. My wife and I now spend our time travelling and working with the Woodson Chapel congregation.”

Most memorable experience while at DLHS: Being associated with students, other teachers and staff the majority of whom put Christianity first, was a memorable experience in itself. I am grateful for that experience.

For several years after leaving DLHS, I was a bookkeeper, then I had my own business in the field of natural health. Now I am in my hometown of Celina caring for my 92-year-old mother. I taught Mathematics at DLHS from 1963 to 1969.

I thank you for inviting me to celebrate with you. I would enjoy seeing you--being there with you. But I am seldom away from Mama for long at a time.

Have a great time together...I loved you, each one!

“I taught at DLHS from 1958 to 1968. Areas included health, physical education, general science, biology, Bible and driver education. I really enjoyed the great students at Lipscomb and coaching some outstanding athletes. It was also a pleasure (and memorable!) teaching driver education. Since that time I have been associated with the State of Tennessee Departments of Education and Correction. I retired in January 2000.”

“I taught at DLHS from 1943 to 1951 and from 1959 to 1977, a total of 26 years. Subjects I taught were U.S. History, World History, English, civics, geography, economics and sociology. Two of my most memorable experiences were June 6, 1944, the day of Lipscomb High School graduation for my sister and also the day my brother was going into France with the D Day invasion. The second memory is November 22, 1963 when President Kennedy was killed. We were in history class when it was announced over the intercom. The mood was one of shock and disbelief. The principal had me to come to the office and explain to the students the line of succession to the presidency.”

“Since retiring I have enjoyed being a full time housewife and helping my husband in various church activities. I have especially enjoyed watching our grandchildren grow up.”

“I taught Bible and Speech for one semester at DLHS from 1966 to 1967. I was then a missionary to Taiwan from 1967 to 1983. I then became a Missionary in Residence at DLU from 1983 to 1984. I have been associated with World Christian Broadcasting since 1985 (Chinese Department). I graduated from Taipei Language Institute in 1968 and received my MA degree from Harding Graduate School of Religion in 1976. I especially remember your class hosting a farewell dinner for us and sending us off with a contribution for our mission work. I seem to remember entertaining students by kicking the top of the door frame too!”
