Bill Toffler’s 25th Year Celebration Bill Toffler and OHSU Family Medicine celebrated a milestone on Thursday, August 19 as we marked the 25th anniversary of Bill Toffler joining the Department.

Bill joined us in August of 1985, leaving an active practice in Sweet Home, Oregon to become an OHSU Family Medicine Faculty member, charged with the task of creating a successful patient care enterprise. As our clinical activities became more robust, Bill focused his talents on teaching medical students. He currently heads the Department’s Section on Medical Student Education.

Bill, Marlene, Toffler family members, faculty, staff and residents gathered in the CHH Kirk Auditorium to hear tributes and a few humorous stories. Scott Fields, John Saultz and Bob Taylor shared memories of early days of the department. Shawn Blanchard described how Bill has mentored him (and many others). A highlight was the “You’ll Know ….When…” observations by Jessica Brown, presented here. (see page 4)

Bill received a “memory book,” edited by Coelleda O’Neil, with contributions from many who have worked with Bill during his time here. Bill and Marlene also were given a certificate for dinner at Jake’s--Bill’s favorite restaurant.

In presenting the certificate, Bob Taylor noted that Bill’s “recruitment dinner” was held at a Chuck E. Cheese restaurant, with Marlene and several little Tofflers present. And so, finally, 25 years later, Bill and Marlene will get their elegant (and well deserved) “recruitment dinner.”

Bill Toffler’s 25th Year Celebration (continued) In the Medical Student Education section we talk in code…that code is Myers Briggs personality type indicators. That being said, I am an “I”. When Bob asked me to speak today, I nearly had a stroke…but then I quickly realized that if I was ever going to give a speech for anyone, I’m absolutely honored that it is for Bill. I want to give you an idea what it is like to work for Bill.

You know you’re Bill Toffler’s assistant when…

You get phone calls from NBC, ABC and FOX News all wanting to speak to Bill within the next hour for a breaking news story.

You know you’re Bill Toffler’s assistant when… You have steady stream of pharmaceutical reps in your office to make appointments with Bill because he is one of the last Family Medicine docs at OHSU who will speak to them.

You know you’re Bill Toffler’s assistant when…

You go into Bill’s office to get a signature and leave 20 minutes later only to realize that you still need his signature.

You know you’re Bill Toffler’s assistant when…

You put something in his box that you need back, and have to go into his office and look through 30 NEW piles to fine what you are looking for.

In the words of Bill, “You can’t make this stuff up.”

The number one way you know that you are Bill Toffler’s assist is…Everyday your opinions are not only listened to but heard, your ideas are valued, and your recommendations are implemented.

Thank you, Bill, for being the most amazing boss I have every worked for.

The Taylors celebrate 50 years On July 30, Bob and Anita Taylor celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at a dinner held in Virginia Beach, the home of their oldest daughter and her family. More than two dozen relatives and friends came to join in the event. The Taylors were married in

New York City, and lived in Virginia, upstate New York, and North Carolina before coming to Oregon in 1984. At the event, old stories were told, grandchildren had their first limo ride, and new memories (and some new friendships) were made.

Full-Service Family Medicine Hospital Care The Family Medicine Inpatient Service recently discharged and re-admitted a very ill patient so he could attend a motorcycle festival which was significant for him – a “not-for-profit” motorcycle club (only in Oregon).

The patient was readmitted in an end-of-life situation. The intern, Sharlene Murphy, D.O wrote in her discharge summary, “Patient and partner of 25 years were married in the hospital. This was the big goal they wanted to achieve before the patient dies.” \

What Dr. Murphy, an ordained minister, did not mention in the discharge summary, was that it was she, the intern, who performed the marriage in a ceremony which those who witnessed it describe as unforgettable.

"You and I may not live to see the day, and my name may be forgotten when it comes, but the time will arrive when great outbreaks of cholera will be things of the past; and it is the knowledge of the way in which the disease is propagated which will cause them to disappear."

British anesthesiologist and epidemiologist John Snow (1813-1858)

The above is a comment made in 1884 by Dr. Snow to the Reverend Henry Whitehead, of the St. Luke's Church in Soho, who originally challenged the Broad Street pump theory as to the source of the cholera epidemic. Whitehead’s research caused him to change his mind and agree with Snow. In fact, Snow’s name has not been forgotten.

In the News Daisuke Yamashita made a presentation and was a member of a panel discussion on the symposium regarding Family Medicine Certification in Japan held June 27, 2010. The Japan Primary Care Association Annual Scientific Meeting was very first scientific

meeting after the merger of three primary care focused academies. There was heated discussion around family medicine board certification. Issues included "grandfathering for existing physicians", "scope of practice", and "social acceptance". Daisuke presented the history and current state of board certification in the US and UK.

On July 29, Daisuke presented a workshop titled International Medical Graduates Applying to Family Medicine Residency Programs at the National Conference of Family Medicine Residents and Students in Kansas City. The presentation helped international medical graduates learn how to develop attractive applications and included tips around the ERAS matching process.
