Rector’s Letter

Get a ‘round tuit’ this Lent

I wonder if you remember an ornament which was called a ‘round tuit’? It was intended as the perfect gift for those of us who find procrastination all too easy. As I write, I am conscious of other tasks I should have done today. Indeed, it may be the case that your reading this article is a way of a leaving undone that which ought to be done.

According to Microsoft researcher, on average we waste some sixty-nine minutes a day avoiding jobs that need to be done. There is a high price for our procrastination: it may consume up to three years of our lives. The research indicates that women are better at procrastinating than men, and that young people are similarly more gifted at this art than those of greater years. The research also more out the obvious human tendency to delay unpleasant tasks more than pleasant ones.

One of the research psychologists involved in the UK based study noted that: “People often avoid ‘doing’ things which may lead to important results. Yet ticking things off your ‘to do’ list helps you to better focus on your goals. It may be that Britons like to spend time mulling things over before actually doing them – perhaps too much so.” If, as Christians, we regard time as a precious God-given gift, then its misuse and the consequent creation of energy-sapping blockages in our lives should be a concern to us. What unpleasant task do we need to engage with this Lent in order to be liberated to move on and enjoy life in all its fullness?

But there is an important need for perspective here. Oscar Romero’s prayer which follows would encourage us to reflect on the essential nature of any of our endeavours:

The Prayer of Oscar Romero It helps, now and then, to step back and take the long view. The Kingdom is not only beyond our efforts, It is even beyond our vision. We accomplish in our lifetime only a tiny fraction of the magnificent enterprise that is God’s work. Nothing we do is complete, Which is another way of saying that The Kingdom always lies beyond us. No statement says all that should be said. No prayer fully expressed our faith. No confession brings perfection. No pastoral visit brings wholeness. No program accomplishes the church’s mission. No set of goals and objectives includes everything. This is what we are about. We plant the seeds that one day will grow. We water seeds already planted, Knowing that they hold future promise. We lay foundations that will need further development. We provide yeast that produced effects far beyond our capabilities. We cannot do everything, And there is a sense of liberation in realizing that.

This enables us to do something, and to do it very well. It may be incomplete, but it is a beginning, A step along the way, An opportunity for the Lord’s grace to enter and do the rest. We may never see the end results, But that is the difference Between the master builder and the worker. We are workers, not master builders, Ministers, not messiahs. We are prophets of a future that is not our own. Amen.

Gardeners’ Corner April 2014

by

Alistair Peak PGS

“Oh what a beautiful morning, Oh what a beautiful day” These are the words that

we hear as spring should be with us now. With everywhere greening up and the blossoms in full flow, the snowdrops over, Spring is surely here. The flowering

cherries (Prunus family) will be at their best along with many Primroses, Tulips,

Ribes and Forsythia.

With Easter later this year, it is often the time for many people to start in earnest in their gardens. Gardening is very much weather related, so if you haven’t started

up your lawnmower you need to be thinking about getting it going. Give the lawn a good rake to remove twigs and moss and if possible roll, leaving it to re-grow

before you give it it’s first cut. Remember to adjust the mower to a high setting for

the first few cuts so as not to scalp the turf.

Many of your herbaceous plants will be starting to grow. They are wonderful plants, laying dormant in the ground over winter and now they will be making daily

progress in the warmth of the spring sunshine. You need to think about staking up

before they spread everywhere. Staking early only looks unsightly for a short period of time and the plants look more natural as they grow rather than leaving it

too late and having to hoick them up exposing the stems and, if they have over-hung the lawn, dead grass. I cannot over emphasise how important the staking of

plants is. Many plants if they don’t grow more than 60cm/2ft should be fine - anything above this should be staked.

What do you use? There are a number of ways from ‘pea sticks’ ie Hazel branches,

Buddleia, Dogwoods, the coloured bark varieties of anything that has lots of twigs off a main stem. Canes and string work well for more robust plants, be careful of

sharp canes - watch your eyes. Then finally there are the metal or coated metal supports, which can be purchased from the Garden Centres. They can be

inter-linked to make them whatever size you need. These are more expensive but

if you clean them up and store them in the dry after each season they should last for years.

Alistairs’ Tip: Whenever you have a few moments, hoeing the beds will keep the weeds at bay. If you have bulbs in tubs keep them well watered to prevent drying out.

Medbourne Playground

A big thank you to everyone who has volunteered to mow the Medbourne Playground this year. Your help is much appreciated

SPORTS CLUB EXTENSION UPDATE *********************************

Those that have been inside the clubhouse can now see that the seemingly impossible has become possible. Through a massive effort from both contractors and some volunteers alike, the finishing line for the completion of the first 3 phases can be seen. Of course the fundraising continues as we have a 4th phase to be done and to this end there are a few events planned. Later in the year we will be holding a Bingo Night, Gardener’s Question time on Leicester radio and other events. Watch the notice boards for details. The 4th phase entails converting the garage area into 2 more changing rooms and constructing a new garage away from the main building so that all the machinery is separate from the main clubhouse. We have applied for a grant for this phase but have yet to hear whether we have been successful or not. The success of all the fundraising activities rely totally on support and as all the members of the sections of the Sports Club will benefit greatly from the improvements to the facilities, please support the efforts of the fundraising committee. We should be rightly proud of the exceptional club that we enjoy in Medbourne and I know that visitors to the club are always astounded by the setting we sometimes are guilty of taking for granted. When- not if- the fourth phase is completed, we will have a multi-sports club that has facilities that will be the envy of other clubs in Leicestershire. It has now been nearly 10 years since a very small group of people took on the task of raising the necessary funds to provide a clubhouse that would last for the foreseeable future and in that time they have worked tirelessly to see that task become possible. I cannot adequately convey my thanks to them for sticking to the task so doggedly. Mention should also go to Martyn Jones who has been there every step of the way, also to Patrick Christiansen, Ian Clarke, Steve Hubbard, Peter Hales, Charlie Jefferson and John Burrows whose help has been immeasurable.

St Giles’ Church, Medbourne An exciting proposal to put a new stained glass window in St Giles’ Church is currently under discussion by the Diocese of Leicester. The baptism themed window, which will be placed near the font, is being funded largely by private donations, but there will be an opportunity for those who wish to do so, to offer donations and thereby feel part of the project. More details will follow once approval has been received from the Diocese.

It has been difficult to find walks that avoid mud in this, the wettest of winters, but Margaret managed to do this for our February walk. Starting from the village of Gumley and keeping to tracks and lanes we did a semi-circular walk to the South of the village. The rain kept off and we were able to enjoy the lovely scenery that this area offers. Our next walk will be on Wednesday 16th April. Meet at Great Easton Village Hall at 9.30. All welcome but participants must be responsi-ble for their own safety.

GREAT EASTON PARISH COUNCIL

There have been a number of changes in make-up of the parish council during the last two months. RETIREMENT OF THE COUNCIL’S CLERK – DAVID DOUCHE. David has been clerk to the parish council since 1991 and during that time has provided exemplary, good humoured, unflappable and unfussy service to the council and the community on many occasions way beyond the call of duty. He has now decided to retire and we thank him most gratefully on behalf of the village for all he has done and wish him well in the future. He will be replaced as Parish Clerk by David Gibley, well known to all for his excellent work for the village hall and the parish church. We look forward to working with him on behalf of, and in the interests of the village community. RETIREMENT OF PARISH COUNCILLORS Ivor Luscombe and Heather Ingram have both resigned from the council. Ivor has been our tree warden for many years and his advice and expertise has been invaluable, not only to the council but to many residents in looking after and protecting the trees which are such an important part of our environment and our picturesque village. He is succeeded as tree warden by Alice Murdock and anybody requiring advice or seeking to undertake work to trees in the village should contact her. She herself will continue to make use of Ivor’s professional expertise as occasion arises. Heather has been our police liaison and community and heritage officer. She has executed these responsibilities with exemplary care and with her deep and extensive local knowledge will be much missed. TWO NEW COUNCILLORS Ivor and Heather have been replaced on the council by the co-option of two new members – Phil Long and Greta Vizma. It is intended that they will serve initially, until the council is dissolved for the next local government elections in May 2015 PUBLIC TRANSPORT The County Council propose to include the Rural Rider Route 7, Great Easton to Market Harborough service in a Demand Responsive Transport (DRT) programme at some time during 2014. The service will still have the Tuesday and Thursday timetable but people wanting to use the bus will have to ring up and ask for it. The bus will then run that Tuesday or Thursday requested even if only one person asks for it. Surprisingly this does make economic sense because this Rural Rider service costs £100K per year after fares received and, on average, there are two passengers on each journey.

The Great Easton/Leicester route has been withdrawn and this journey may now be made using the Centre Bus hourly return services, Route RF1 between Great Easton and Uppingham and Route 747 between Uppingham and Leicester.

WAR MEMORIAL Some years ago we arranged for the refurbishment of the names on the monument of the fallen in the Great War of 1914-18, which had become eroded with time. The time has now come to do the same for the fallen of the 1939-45 war. It is proposed to preserve their names in exactly the same high-standard and enduring material and style as their predecessors’, executed once more by the same craftsman who did such an excellent job. This will not be inexpensive. It will in fact cost £500 but we are confident that no one will object to this expenditure in such a cause, especially perhaps in this centenary year of 2014.
