This document specifies requirements for information management, in the form of a management process, within the context of the delivery phase of assets and the exchanges of information within it, using building information modelling.

This document can be applied to all types of assets and by all types and sizes of organizations, regardless of the chosen procurement strategy

Page 9: BIM and Clients€¦ · management process, within the context of the delivery phase of assets and the exchanges of information within it, using building information modelling. This

Information Management Function

functiongroup of activities aimed at achieving one or more goals of an organization

BS EN ISO 19650-2 includes 40 tasks as part of the information management function. As written:

• 16 are assigned to the appointing party (Client)

9

Alternatively, a lead appointed party (or a third-party) can be appointed to undertake all or part of the information management function.

Information Management Function

Of these 16, a client will (typically) already undertake several of these tasks:

5.1.3 Establish information delivery milestones;

5.1.6 Establish the project’s reference information and shared resources;

5.2.2 Assemble the project’s reference information and shared resources;

5.2.3 Establish tender response requirements and evaluation criteria;

5.2.4 Compile invitation to tender information;

5.4.7 Complete appointment documentation;

5.8.1 Archive the project information model; and5.8.2 Capture lessons learnt.

For these tasks, a revision to a client’s quality management would likely be sufficient.

Leaving 8 tasks which may appear* new:

5.1.1 Appoint individuals to undertake the information management function;

5.1.2 Establish the project’s information requirements;

5.1.4 Establish the project’s information standard;

5.1.5 Establish the project’s information production methods and procedures;

5.1.7 Establish the project’s common data environment;

5.1.8 Establish the project’s information protocol;

5.2.1 Establish the appoint party’s exchange information requirements; and5.7.4 Review and accept the information model.

Information Protocol

5.1.1 Appoint individuals to undertake the information management function; and

5.1.8 Establish the project’s information protocol.

To support the establishment of an information protocol, a template information protocol is available from www.UKBIMFramework.org

NOTE: The delegation of tasks to the lead appointed party (or a 3rd party) may impact on the validity of the template

Information Requirements

Case Study: Local AuthorityIn preparation for a series of framework appointments, a local authority engaged with BSI to align their procurement documentation to suit BS EN ISO 19650-2

Employer’s Requirements

1.1.3 The Contractor is required to produce detailed drawings andspecification documentation for the complete extent of the works.

1.1.11 The Contractor is required to produce a finishes schedule for eachroom indicating the materials and colours selected for approval bythe Project Manager.

These are information requirements!

1.1.3 Provide a record of all documentation listed on the project’s master information delivery plan prior to practical completion. For Record.

1.1.11 Provide a finishes schedule identifying the material and colour of all finishes within each room prior to the completion of Technical Design. For approval.

Page 16: BIM and Clients€¦ · management process, within the context of the delivery phase of assets and the exchanges of information within it, using building information modelling. This

Standards, Methods, and Procedures

5.1.4 Establish the project’s information standard; and5.1.5 Establish the project’s information production methods and procedures.

Use these resources to specify the standards, methods and procedures that are critical to the information you will be managing and receiving.• Spaces shall be numbered in accordance with the methodology specified within BS EN

ISO 4157-2; and• Drawings shall be provided in PDF 2.0.

If you use public procurement rules, DO NOT SPECIFY SOFTWARE (2014/25/EU (83))

Page 17: BIM and Clients€¦ · management process, within the context of the delivery phase of assets and the exchanges of information within it, using building information modelling. This

The Final 2…

5.1.7 Establish the project’s CDE; and

5.7.4 Review and accept the information model.

Remember, a common data environment is a process, not a piece of technology. The CDE can include areas on a local server/machine.

It is vital that the approval and acceptanceprocedures should be agreed and documented before any information exchange takes place.

Summary

BS EN ISO 19650-2 specifies requirements for information management within the context of the delivery phase of assets and the exchanges of information within it, using building information modelling.

BS EN ISO 19650-2 specifies 40 tasks as part of the information management function.

• As written, 16 of these are assigned to the appointing party (Client);

• Many of these tasks (8+) are tasks that a client already undertakes;

• There is no such thing as a “BIM project”, clients require information on all projects; and

• Depending on the nature of your organization you may wish to delegate some of these to a lead appointed party.

The building will be designed primarily for people with varying degrees of dementia and will accommodate both very frail and more active people, including those with physical and mental disabilities. We aim to provide 62 new extra care flats to meet the needs of local people. The principle of a new extra care housing facility is to allow people to maintain an independent lifestyle but they may need some 'extra care' to do that.
