All Laing O’Rourke Projects to be BIM by 2010
DfMA (Design for Manufacture & Assembly)
Do nothing?
Relax – no pressure
![Page 3: BIM SHOW LIVE 14 - SME architectural BIM journey](https://reader033.vdocument.in/reader033/viewer/2022051211/554a3f21b4c9055a408b4d5d/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)
Lots of it!
Frustration
Conflicts
Assign lead
We knew we had to fully understand BIM as
our main client group is government funded
![Page 4: BIM SHOW LIVE 14 - SME architectural BIM journey](https://reader033.vdocument.in/reader033/viewer/2022051211/554a3f21b4c9055a408b4d5d/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
Pathology scheme won in 2011
Given option to use BIM
Jumped at chance
Full design team (architect/structural
engineer, M&E engineer, contractor)
willing to try BIM
Contractor was kind & stated you can go
back to 2D – phew!
![Page 5: BIM SHOW LIVE 14 - SME architectural BIM journey](https://reader033.vdocument.in/reader033/viewer/2022051211/554a3f21b4c9055a408b4d5d/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
What they wanted
Floor areas
Linear measurements
Wall areas
Ceilings – coordinated “areas”
Envelope quantities
FFE schedules
Model for federation “clash detection”
What we wanted
No real concept at this point of what could
be acheived
![Page 6: BIM SHOW LIVE 14 - SME architectural BIM journey](https://reader033.vdocument.in/reader033/viewer/2022051211/554a3f21b4c9055a408b4d5d/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
Upgrade selected users to “Architect” version as fundamental version
did not give us the tools needed. Being selective was a mistake.
Basic 3D training in VectorWorks Architect
Advanced 3D training in VectorWorks Architect
• Spaces
• Stories
• Model set-up
• Workgroup ref
In-house training
• Strategic steps
• drop in sessions
• one-to-one
• “just in time”
• upskill a team
![Page 7: BIM SHOW LIVE 14 - SME architectural BIM journey](https://reader033.vdocument.in/reader033/viewer/2022051211/554a3f21b4c9055a408b4d5d/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
2D process had to continue, speed of scheme dictated this
![Page 8: BIM SHOW LIVE 14 - SME architectural BIM journey](https://reader033.vdocument.in/reader033/viewer/2022051211/554a3f21b4c9055a408b4d5d/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
3D process was started in parallel
Lead-in
Inaccurate
Masked issues
Visual only
BIM Development
Generic modelling
Low level of development
Unintelligent “limited data” but sufficient to meet protocols
![Page 9: BIM SHOW LIVE 14 - SME architectural BIM journey](https://reader033.vdocument.in/reader033/viewer/2022051211/554a3f21b4c9055a408b4d5d/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
We became aware very quickly that
the 3D team was on the tail of the 2D
team
The images and results from the 3D
model were noticeably quicker and
more accurate
The 3D images were conveying the
design better
We took the decision to stop the 2D
team and apply all resources to 3D –
this then delivered the planning
drawings via the model

Common Exchange IFC
Luck?Learn?
Feedback?
Did the contractor want IFC? Not really, they wanted native file format but it
soon became obvious there were three authoring platforms in the team.

Fortnightly Design Team Meetings
Reports “clashes” issue by BIM

Justification – it works

Report on clashes for discipline to
correct prior to next Design Team
Meeting.
BIM Manager ran custom rule sets to
establish prefabrication elements.
Co-ordination

Pre-cast concrete deck
Pre-cast concrete stairs
Pre-cast concrete lift core
Pre-case concrete twin-wall
Did it all work? YES but no.
![Page 24: BIM SHOW LIVE 14 - SME architectural BIM journey](https://reader033.vdocument.in/reader033/viewer/2022051211/554a3f21b4c9055a408b4d5d/html5/thumbnails/24.jpg)
IFC geometry issues
Demonstrates necessity to
validate
Time needed to fix issues

Exchange sample files to establish grid/origin – appreciate this is basic CAD but it’s more important than ever.

The process taught us about protocols
We have updated our BMS in line with GCS
PAS1192, BIM protocol etc
Training plans in place
Train staff in 3D authoring – BIM protocols
Assign/identify BIM advocates within the practice
Set up templates
Generate practice content “protocol” “validate”
Business goals
![Page 29: BIM SHOW LIVE 14 - SME architectural BIM journey](https://reader033.vdocument.in/reader033/viewer/2022051211/554a3f21b4c9055a408b4d5d/html5/thumbnails/29.jpg)
Informing clients of government requirements
Engaging with consultants
Participating in events
Getting the message “out there”
Building links with local education providers
Continual developments
Keeping informed on industry progress
Sharing information with clients
Listening and understanding peoples concerns

Be proactive – not reactive
Collaborate – share – learn
Validate
Don’t be too hasty
Interoperability testing
![Page 31: BIM SHOW LIVE 14 - SME architectural BIM journey](https://reader033.vdocument.in/reader033/viewer/2022051211/554a3f21b4c9055a408b4d5d/html5/thumbnails/31.jpg)
2013 was about learning and education
2014 is about…
IMPLEMENTATIONJust do it!
PRACTICETime to understand
Mindshift
GET IT WRONG!Capture mistakes and
share
COBIENo? Yes? When?
![Page 32: BIM SHOW LIVE 14 - SME architectural BIM journey](https://reader033.vdocument.in/reader033/viewer/2022051211/554a3f21b4c9055a408b4d5d/html5/thumbnails/32.jpg)
Focus on getting Level 2- getting systems in place and practicing.
WHY BIM?Why not? Show me a
better way!
LEVEL 2/3?Focus on Level 2 –
getting systems in place and start practicing.
OPEN BIM?This has to be the way
forward.
ISN’T IT JUST CAD?It’s CAD-focused but that’s only one part of
the jigsaw.
![Page 33: BIM SHOW LIVE 14 - SME architectural BIM journey](https://reader033.vdocument.in/reader033/viewer/2022051211/554a3f21b4c9055a408b4d5d/html5/thumbnails/33.jpg)
This has to be the way forward.
