dear participants!

We did it! After a long and intensive year full of projects, collaborative work and fascinating discussions and events, the academic year is behind us while the Study Trip is about to begin. The Study Trip committee is very glad and proud to deliver you this programme, which is the result of a careful collaboration between the members of the committee but also with the BIM board, the teachers, the hosting companies, the sponsoring companies and last but not least you, our fellow participants.

This week we will start with a long weekend, to get some rest from the flight, stand the jetlag and enjoy all the fantastic activities the city of San Francisco has to offer. From Tuesday until Friday morning the professional part will take place with companies such as Zynga, Linkedin, Adobe, Cisco, Mozilla and Google with some other highlights as a conference in Stanford, a visit of the Computer History Museum and a roundtable of entrepreneurs at the Dutch consulate. Friday night will close the first part of this trip.

In this booklet, you will find all the practical information such as the flights, a packing list, an overview of the programme as well as a detailed programme per day, tips about California, San Francisco etc. Because we live in a dynamic world some information in the day to day programme can be subject to change but we will keep you informed about that.

We hope to make from this journey a memorable experience. Amaze yourself and let the rest of the world wish they were BIMmers as well.

See you soon in California!

about san francisco

San Francisco is the financial, cultural and transportation center of the San Francisco Bay Area, a region of 7.6 million people, which includes San Jose and Oakland. It was found on June 29, 1776, and nowadays counts over 805,235 inhabitants. San Francisco is a top tourist place, ranking the 35th/100 most visited cities worldwide. But the city is also known as a principal banking and financial center. San Francisco is famous for its Golden Gate bridge, cable cars, Chinatown and hills. There are over 50 hills within the city. The nearby San Andreas and Hayward Faults are responsible for much earthquake activity – the last one took place in 1989, although neither of them physically passed through the city. However, San Francisco’s architecture and infrastructure is still highly influenced by its’ vulnerability to quake damage.

HistoryAround 1846 San Francisco was still a small city, despite of its attractive location as a port and naval base. However, things changed when the California Gold Rush (1848-1855) brought a flood of treasure/ gold seekers. The effects of the Gold Rush were substantial. The city grew from about 200 residents to 36 000.

Golden Gate bridgeThe bridge was built by Joseph Strauss in 1937, with an investment of 27 million dollars. It connects Oakland with San Francisco, the bridge got its name from the narrow strait of water, which was called ‘Golden Strait’. This strait marks the entrance of the San Francisco Bay from the Pacific Ocean. The bridge is about 1.7 miles long and can be accessed by vehicle, foot and bike.

ClimateMoist mild winter and dry summers. Strongly influenced by the cool currents of the Pacific Ocean. During our trip the weather is predic-ted to be around 19°C during the day and the 12°C at night.

Page 19: BIM Study Trip Program Booklet

19BIM Study Trip 2012

‘The capital of Silicon Valley’ as it is also named. It is the third largest city in California and the tenth largest in the USA with a population of about 1 million inhabitants. It is located at the southern end of the San Francisco Bay. The San Jose / Silicon valley area is a major component of the greater San Francisco Bay Area. This region is the sixth largest metropolitan area in the USA. The area around San Jose is well known for its large concentration of high-technology engineering companies. The economic growth during the tech-bubble and the ongoing growth, resulted in about 405 000 jobs in the Valley in 2006. In which the County of Santa Clara, Cisco Systems and IBM are the 3 top employers in the city.

Silicon ValleyIn 1971 the term Silicon Valley was coined by Ralph Vaerst, a successful Central California entrepreneur. The Valley refers to the Santa Clara Valley, which is located at the southern end of San Fran. ‘Silicon’ refers to the high concentration of companies involved in the semiconductor and computer industries in the area.

you asked more, we answer more

Is it possible to make a ‘liederenbundel’ so we can sing songs collectively while driving to the airport?Anything is possible, as long as you know the right people.

What will be the colors of our cars?Everything but green. In true American style we chose old fashioned gas guzzlers.

I haven’t seen an event in the programme with Guido doing his belly dancing skills. What’s up with that? This event occurs unannounced so just be aware. What helps is buying Guido lots of beer.

How many suits will I have to bring?Well, you will need to wear a suit for four days. So clean shirts will do the job as well.

What WHEN Roel gets drunk?Put your hands up in the air and wave!

What should we bring?Except for what’s in the packing list: yourself in a happy state.

How much money will we have to bring?Enough to pay for dinner and go out some night.

Can we watch the game between The Netherlands and Denmark in New York?Sure!

Can I sleep with Margit?Yes, you can!

Can I sleep with Anneke? No, unless you’re James.
