Introduction of BiMBA 2014 MBA Curriculum

Page 2: BiMBA at Peking University 2014 MBA Course Introduction

BiMBA 2014 MBA Course GuideThrough systematic world-standard MBA education, BiMBA aims to nurture a group of executives with a mastery of the theories and practices of international business and build a group of leaders with knowledge, vision and entrepreneurship. In 2014, BiMBA made new adaptations to its programs in a discreet and innovative way. Based on a rigorous general management curriculum, more electives will be offered and BiMBA will introduce a few frontier topics to students, such as Big Data. We also stretched ourselves to incorporate more practical learning experience to our program. On one hand, we will invite industry practitioners to BiMBA’s class, and on the other hand, we’ll break walls of the classroom and take students on several carefully designed field study trips. Meanwhile, to increase students’ international exposure, we designed one international study trip to Silicon Valley and will offer another second master degree program in cooperation with University of Wisconsin, Madison. On top of this newly designed curriculum, we offer three lecture series to go along with the MBA courses: National Development Lecture Series, Knowing and Doing Lecture Series, and Humanities and Social Sciences Lecture Series. The highlights and details of BiMBA 2014 MBA Curriculum can be found in the following sessions.

One of the most important resources of a world-class business school is the professors who teach with the programs. The faculty of our MBA program are drawn from business schools around the world – 45% from the United States, 25% from Europe, and 30% from China. Internationalization is in the vein of BiMBA. Our founding institution, National School of Development, is the only school at Peking University where all the faculty members received their PhDs from leading universities abroad. Besides, as a top think tank in China, NSD’s faculty bring their understandings of China’s future development to the MBA class. The teaching faculty at BiMBA are chosen based on several important criteria. In the first place, they must have good credentials. All of our faculty members hold a PhD from a leading university (such as Harvard University, University of Chicago, University of

Pennsylvania, etc.). Secondly, they have proved themselves to be excellent instructors. Thirdly, they have to be experts in their respective field both academically and practically, which means they should be not only savvy with the theoretical knowledge in their own fields but also be able to apply the knowledge to real managerial issues faced by organizations. Fourthly, they have to have a very appealing teaching style that enables them to engage the students in the learning process, and helping each member of the class rise to his or her potentials. Instead of following the traditional lecturing method, professors at BiMBA adopted a variety of teaching methodologies, such as case study and experimental learning, to facilitate students’ learning process and create a deep engagement between professors and students.

“Knowing and Doing Lecture Series” focuses on real-world business and practice. Entrepreneurs and senior practitioners from various industries will be invited to talk with students and share with them their insights into the industry and their personal experience. This lecture series is expected to help students develop a better knowledge of relevant industries, integrate their in-class learning with real-world practices, and very importantly acquire a deeper understanding of the key elements for success in both businesses and individual career development. This lecture series has brought very great speakers to BiMBA like Mr. Haiquan Hu, a national well-known singer and an excellent business leader and Mr. Bob McDonald, former President and CEO of Procter & Gamble, etc.

Lecture Series 2: Knowing and Doing

The "Humanities and Social Sciences Lecture Series" is an interdisciplinary exploration and trial, created to help students learn to:1) look at the world with a different perspective, to discover their own "new world".2) look at an issue from different angles, so as not to become absorbed in one professional mindset that can lead to extreme views and overconfidence.3) break away from the mindset of a single specialisation. This is the first step in critical thinking, opening up a world full of possibilities. The emphasis of the series is not on content but rather 'question led' learning. Nine prestigious scholars from various disciplines will each give presentations on subjects including philosophy, politics, law, literature, sociology and traditional chinese medicine.

Lecture Series 3: Humanities and Social Sciences

“National Development Lecture Series” is aimed at setting up a platform for MBA students to interact with distinguished professors at the National School of Development at Peking University—the founding institution of BiMBA, like Prof. Justin Yifu Lin (林毅夫), Prof. Qiren Zhou(周其仁), Prof. Yiping Huang(黄益平), to name just a few, and helping them develop a better comprehension of the current economic and social developments in China. The series will cover a wide range of topics, pooling the academic specialties of prominent scholars in their respective areas, such as economic restructuring, medical reform, monetary policy, etc.
