We are very grateful to the following
individual donors for their generous support:
Michael and Pam Isman, Len and Sharolyn
Zablotny, Ross and Caron Penhall, and Jane
Justice.
As to our corporate sponsors, we would like to
thank: CMHC for its ongoing support; Opus
Framing for its contribution of the Opus Prize;
a new supporter, Gamblin, for sending us a pile
of goodies to bestow on a lucky recipient; the
Granville Island Hotel for the amazing dinner it
provided for our jury members after a long day
of jurying the submissions, and to Zara’s Pasta,
for the tasty delights it has provided for several
BIMPE occasions.
Also, we would like to extend our thanks to
this year’s jury panel: Vanessa Hall-Patch, Sean
Caufield and Joseph Montague, who took the
time to sit down with close to a 1000 prints and
evaluate each one.
This catalogue is dedicated to all
the volunteers and supporters
of BIMPE VI. Without their
encouragement and contributions
our exhibition would not exist.
THankyou
As with previous BIMPE exhibitions, The
Federation Gallery and Dundarave Print
Workshop have been invaluable by providing
staff during the show and volunteers for framing
and presenting the exhibition.
Our board members from SCWOP have been
great in suggesting new directions for the
planning and implementation of this year’s
exhibition. Our thanks go out to our board
members: Jamie Evrard, Ross Penhall, Marsha
McCall and John Ramsay.
We can’t thank Clodia Aigner enough for
designing this catalogue and for her expertise.
Our web geek Chris Torgalson (Bedlam Hotel)
has given us an enormous amount of help in
getting the website running for the online entry

form. Pinnacle Graphics is the printer of this
BIMPE catalogue and we would like to thank
them for being so accommodating in meeting
our meagre budget.
The scanning team tirelessly scanned every
print in the show and for that we would like to
express our appreciation to Jane Davies, Lisa
McLean and Andrea Taylor (who also provided
the comic relief that is vital to this task) and to
our framing crew, which consisted of Maxie Von
Shwerin, Barb Snyder, Deborah Kerr, Katie Dey
and Rosalind Rorke.

Last but not least, we would like to thank Susan
Gransby and Hannamari Jalovaara for the last
minute proof reading, without which we would
have many mistrakes.

The ongoing success of BIMPE (The Biennial International Mini Print Exhibition) has led us to new milestones this year. For the first time, the show will be held in September, returning to the very successful venue: The Federation of Canadian Artists Gallery. The BIMPE VI catalogue was made with the generous help of Clodia Aigner from Zen House Media. It will be available for purchase at the opening and will include an image of every print selected for the exhibition.
After a month with the Federation Gallery, the show then moves to the exhibition space of our ongoing supporters and collaborators, Dundarave Print Workshop. A community-based print association, Dundarave has been our partner for all the BIMPE exhibitions. They provide volunteers and a host space for the exhibition, not to mention many talented printmakers that have contributed over the years. We are grateful for their unwavering support.
We then take the show on the road to SNAP, the Society of Northern Alberta Printmakers, in Edmonton, Alberta. Our exhibition will be one of the first shows for SNAP in their new space, and we would like to thank Anna Szul for arranging this. We are thrilled to be exhibiting in Edmonton and to be bringing BIMPE to more eyes across Canada.
About the Show
As a miniature print exhibition, BIMPE’s only requirement is that a print be no larger than 4 by 6 inches, or 24 inches square. That being said, BIMPE is open to all types of print media, including digital or otherwise unconventional means of “printmaking”.
For BIMPE VI, 300 artists entered our exhibition, representing over 35 countries. The variety of work submitted was amazing and we are pleased that so many have chosen to enter again. Over the past two years, the economic environment has changed dramatically for artists around the world. In that regard, we are relieved to see that so many artists were still able to enter our exhibition. It is not always easy or affordable to pack up your artwork and mail it across the world. To our artists we owe everything, without your loyalty we would have nothing to exhibit.
BIMPE is organized by SCWOP (The Society for Contemporary Works on Paper), a non - profit society created to support the exposure of art on paper.
NEW LEAF EDITIONS, the incubator of BIMPE, is a collaborative printmaking workshop, specializing in etching, relief printing and almost anything that they can dream up.
Peter Braune of New Leaf Editions and Debra Yelva from Dundarave Print Workshop created the idea of BIMPE in 2000. During Peter’s absence in 2000 to 2002, the exhibition was nurtured and carried forward by the heroic efforts of Katie Dey, Marijke Nap and Debra Yelva.

Joseph Montague
Jurors' Statements
JOSEPH MONTAGUE
Joseph Montague was born in Montreal and moved to Vancouver in 1968, where he studied at Langara College (Fine Arts Diploma), UBC (B.Ed.) and Emily Carr (photography and printmaking). In 1979 he moved to New York to continue studying printmaking, and was employed as Assistant to the Director at Pratt Graphics Center. Later he worked in the storage and preparations department at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, and set up and ran the etching department at Watanabe Studio Ltd. Since moving back to Vancouver in 1992, he has continued to work in a variety of media. He won the public art competition for Library Square in 1995. Aside from teaching and commissions he has worked in the motion picture industry since 1994 in various capacities, chiefly as a scenic painter. In 2003 he was one of the team of draughtsmen who executed Sol LeWitt's Wall Drawing #1100 at the Pearson Airport in Toronto.
Recently Joseph collaborated with Greenpeace Canada as graphic designer for the CD titled Amchitka - The 1970 concert that launched Greenpeace featuring Joni Mitchell, James Taylor and Phil Ochs. It was released on November 10, 2009.
First of all thanks to all the competitors who with buren or brayer, grease pencil or inkjet, braved the barren wasteland of the blank sheet of paper and in effect created new currency. To those who didn't make the cut this time please realize that
it was sometimes only by a hair; for those whose work was accepted, heart-felt felicitations. And a big bravo to the prize winners. I would also like to express my kudos to the tireless organizers at New Leaf Editions: Lesley Anderson and especially founder and owner Peter Braune, without whose vision, energy and sense of humor BIMPE would not exist. And finally much appreciation to the Granville Island Hotel for supplying a delicious dinner to end the day of jurying.
When the dust settled, Veliko Marinchevski's work stood at the top of the heap, and with Sensing Nature 3, Stems and Birds he took first prize. This piece operates on many levels: it breathes space and music in its minimalist logic and impeccable craftsmanship.
The delightful, provocative and daring work of Leslie Golomb caught the jurors' attention, and her exuberant image Preaching to the Birds won second prize.
11
Sean Caulfield
Sergio Serrano's elegant and mysterious Transmutation, in its portrayal of stability versus volatility with its curious yet appropriate insertion of a copper tab garnered the third prize.
The Opus prize went to Andrea Pinheiro for her photogravure Wall, a luscious depiction of a wall at a demolition site, with heavy volumes of concrete and rubble given counterpoint by wispy trailing lines of rebar sprouting from the top like so many rogue hairs.
Finally, a little jewel: the enigmatic and tender portrayal of a young boy's back in the mezzotint Then won Cleo Wilkinson the Jamie Evrard prize.
SEAN CAULFIELD
Sean Caulfield was born in Westerly, Rhode Island in 1967. After completing his MFA in printmaking at the University of Alberta in 1995, Sean spent five years working in the United States, first at Northern Illinois University as a Visiting Professor, and then at Illinois State University as an Assistant Professor. He returned to Canada in 2001 to work at The University of Alberta as a junior Canadian Research Chair in printmaking.
During the last five years Sean Caulfield has participated in a wide range of national and international exhibitions throughout Canada, the United States, Europe, and Japan.
Participating as a jury member for the 2010 BIMPE exhibition was an exciting and rewarding experience on many levels. One of the most interesting aspects of the exhibition for me was engaging with the mini-print format itself, which imposes such interesting limitations on
artists that paradoxically seem to expand creative possibilities. For example, there are several works in this exhibition in which reduction of scale results in a powerful, succinct visual and conceptual statement. Alternatively, some artists seem to deliberately challenge the small-scale format in order to pull the viewer into an intricate and expansive world that stretches far beyond the picture plane. Other images utilize the intimate format to reference book plates in order to create narratives, and charged political or social statements. Regardless of the formal and conceptual sensibilities, it is interesting to consider how artists respond to the small-scale format, and in a time when so much cultural production in our society seems centered around excess and sensationalism, it is refreshing to see prints from around the world engaging viewers so deeply on such an intimate scale.

Vanessa Hall-Patch
VANESSA HALL-PATCH
Vanessa Hall-Patch lives on Bowen Island, BC and commutes to Vancouver where she works as both a technician and instructor at Emily Carr University of Art and Design. Hall-Patch received her Masters in Fine Arts from the University of Alberta in 2004 and prior to that her Bachelors of Fine Arts from Queen’s University in 2001. Hall-Patch has participated in national and international exhibitions throughout Canada, the United States, Europe, and Japan and is the recipient of various grants and artist residencies. She creates works on paper through a combination of mixed media printmaking, photography and collage. As inspiration for her art, she continually draws upon her surroundings as she currently explores concepts of home and the emotional and physical attachments to it. This year the BIMPE jury procedures had been given an overhaul. Prints were no longer covering all surfaces of New Leaf Editions for judging, but alternatively viewed one by one.
We were presented with a row of bulging three ring binders overflowing with page after page of miniature prints. Ordered alphabetically by the artist’s last name, each binder spine was marked with the corresponding letter. It was clear by the sheer volume this was going to be an exciting and rewarding experience. My journey through the library of prints began with the four-inch binder marked M-N. Over the day I spent time quietly regarding each artist and every print individually, noting process, content and origin.
Due to the transportable nature of print, works of art had traveled from down the road to half way across the world. Spain, Peru, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Poland, Ireland, Belgium, Australia, Germany, Bulgaria, Japan, France, USA and Canada…the list goes on. Regardless that the majority of participating artists were strangers to each other, when reviewing the works there was a sense of community that could not go unnoticed.
Not only is BIMPE a grand example of the international scope of the printmaking community, but it also showcases the endless applications of print techniques today. From traditional black and white mezzotints to contemporary flocked screen prints with laser-etched lines, each mini print embraced process and technique; both elements of the visual language all printmakers communicate in.
Thank you to Peter Braune and Lesley Anderson for granting me this memorable opportunity to submerge myself in hours of print appreciation and for continuing to build the inspiring and ever-expanding BIMPE.
