Austin Fowles rushed for 135 yards for Robert Lee, Mychael Tijerina passed for 105 yards and Bruce Buddin caught a 41-yard pass.

Next week, Rising Star ventures to unde-feated Gordon (3-0) — which is coming off a 48-0 win over the Wildcats’ district rival Blanket — in search of its first win.

CISCO 43, COMANCHE 0CISCO — The Class 3A top-ranked Cisco

Loboes showed no letdown after last week’s come-from-behind win over Wall as they dished out the Comanche Indians’ second straight defeat, 43-0, Friday night.

Cisco (3-0) scored two touchdowns in each of the first three quarters and tacked on a fourth-quarter field goal. The Loboes

finished with 394 yards of total offense — with 353 coming on the ground.

Comanche (1-2) was limited to a mere 54 yards — 30 yards rushing on 31 carries and 24 yards through the air on 3 of 10 passing.

Cash Mankin finished with 47 yards on the ground for the Indians, while Fabian Zuniga caught two passes for 17 yards. Pay-ton Nance did all the passing for Comanche.

Landon Lewis rushed for 153 yards for Cisco, while Taylor Massey chipped in 125 yards.

Next week, Comanche will attempt to bounce back as it hosts undefeated Brady (3-0) — which knocked off Llano, 20-17, in double overtime Friday.

JOHNSON CITY 19, SAN SABA 7SAN SABA — The San Saba Armadillos’

offensive woes continued Friday night as they remained winless following a 19-7 home defeat at the hands of the Johnson City Eagles.

San Saba (0-3) matched Johnson City (3-0) in the first period, as a 20-yard touchdown pass from Garrett Welch to John Welch knotted the score at 7. But the Eagles added touchdowns in the second and third peri-ods, and the ’Dillos were unable to answer.

Johnson City finished with just 212 total yards — 118 rushing and 94 passing — with one turnover, but San Saba mustered only 124 yards — 78 on the ground and 46 through the air — with a pair of turnovers.

Jessie Franco rushed for 25 yards for San Saba followed by Joel Franco with 19, Jose Guerrero with 13, Garrett Welch with 11 and John Welch with 10 yards.

Garrett Welch was 5 of 17 through the air for 46 yards as John Welch caught three passes for 43 yards, and Joel Franco added two grabs for 3 yards.

San Saba will battle unbeaten Bremond (3-0) — which is coming off 20-6 victory over Hubbard — at Gatesville next week.

BY DERRICK STUCKLY BROWNWOOD [email protected]

In their fi fth outing of the season, and fi rst in front of the home faithful at Citizens National Bank Field, the Howard Payne Yellow Jackets were again kept out of the win column.

The Yellow Jackets slipped to 0-5 on the season with a 3-1 home loss to Wayland

Baptist in non-conference action Friday afternoon.

Howard Payne jumped out to a 1-0 lead 16:58 into the contest when Shay Pate scored on a shot from the top of the box.

Just 10 seconds later, how-ever, Wayland pulled even at 1 when David Neuberth drilled the fi rst of his three goals.

Knotted at 1 at halftime,

WBU took the lead 7:14 into the second half when Neu-berth again scored.

Neuberth completed his hat trick with an insurance goal with 16:04 left in the contest.

Wayland Baptist fi red 20 shots with 16 on goal as Brice Gardner recorded 13 saves for the Yellow Jackets.

Howard Payne attempted only four shots with two on goal — one by Pate, which he converted, and the other by Tracer Moore.

The Yellow Jackets will visit the University of Dal-las at 2 p.m. today, then host Ranger College in an exhibition match on Sept. 23 before resuming American Southwest Conference action at Hardin-Simmons on Oct. 4.

Howard Payne dropped its only other ASC contest, 4-2 at Louisiana College, on Sept. 5.

BANGS — The Bangs Lady Dragons dropped a 25-18, 25-20, 25-20 decision to Breckenridge Saturday afternoon, but fi rst-year head coach Lori Eason touted the team’s perfor-mance as its best of the season.

“It’s the best we’ve played all year, today was a moral victory,” Eason said. “We only missed one serve the entire match and had several aces. Breckenridge is a high caliber team and we were consistent in all three sets. I couldn’t be more proud of the girls today.”

The Lady Dragons (6-13) will be back in action at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday as they host Bronte.

Lions win Fort Worth Invitational,No. 8 Lady Lions third in 5A-6A race

BY DERRICK STUCKLY BROWNWOOD [email protected]

FORT WORTH — The Brownwood Lions fi n-ished in fi rst place in the Class 1A-4A division, while the eighth-ranked Lady Lions came in third in the Class 5A-6A portion of the Fort Worth Invitational cross country meet Saturday.

The Brownwood boys chalked up 29 points, six fewer than the 35 tallied by runner-up Boyd.

All fi ve Lion runners placed in the Top 20 as Justin Gomez fi nished second for Brownwood with a time of 17:37.21 followed by Hugo Yebra in third place (17:41.31), Reid Longabaugh in sixth place (18:12.9), Ben Berger in seventh place (18:28.51) and Jason Sanchez in 16th place (20:01.18).

“The boys ran much better this week,” said Brownwood cross country head coach Don Hood. “All of them ran their best career times, and Justin and Hugo were outstanding. Ben and Reid continue to improve and gave solid runs today. They are about to make some big improvements. Freshmen twin brothers Jesse and Jason Sanchez ran huge PRs today. Jesse got under 19 minutes, and we haven’t had a ninth grader to run that fast in fi ve years.”

The Lady Lions garnered 148 points against much larger competition and fi nished behind only Justin Northwest (36 points) and Grape-vine (68). Teams the Brownwood girls defeated included host Fort Worth Paschal, Joshua, Man-sfi eld Legacy, Burleson Centennial, Fort Worth Nolan Catholic, Euless Trinity, Burleson, Col-leyville Heritage, Birdville, Weatherford, Aledo, Mansfi eld, Fort Worth Western Hills and Dallas Sunset.

Jessica Romero came in ninth (19:13.75) to lead the Lady Lions followed by Julianne Hood (26th, 20:08.87), Tori Burkett (38th, 20:38.44), Jaycee Lenz (39th, 20:40.24), Kyra Young (46th, 20:52.59), Esmeralda Hernandez (53rd, 21:13.25), Ashley Strong (59th, 21:23.1), Micaela Lom-brano (68th, 21:51.38), Jeane Standridge (72nd, 21:53.89), Alexis Solis (78th, 22:02.79) and Kristi Ward (100th, 23:27.07).

“It was our girls’ fi rst 5K race and they were impressive,” Hood said. “To fi nish third out of 17 quality teams is great for us. Grapevine is No. 10 in 5A and Northwest is ranked No. 7 in 6A by

TexasTrack.com.“We had two freshmen that stepped up and

moved up into our top seven. Jaycee Lenz and Kyra Young are getting better each week. Esmer-alda Hernandez, a sophomore, has also moved up tremendously. Jessica Romero was strong. She ran a gutsy race and it paid off with a top 10 fi nish. She is on the verge of being one of the best in the state. Tori Burkett and Julianne were solid and they are getting better every week.”

The next action for the Lions and Lady Lions takes place Saturday as they will compete in the annual Brownwood Reunion Fun Run.

on the Pioneer 20 with 2:31 remaining. After picking up a first down, Campuzano dropped back to pass on a first-and-10 from the WBU 30, but Jordan Shaw intercepted the toss at midfield with 1:35 remaining. Howard Payne was then able to run out the clock and wrap up the win.

“Our guys played tough, but hats off to Wayland for making some adjustments we weren’t used to,” Ament said. “We were being a little more aggressive in the first half and put our guys in bad situations in the back end. In the second half, we played some base stuff, made all our checks and our guys were running to the ball. Every time they made something, we adjusted. Our guys played their butts off and I’m very proud of them.”

Offensively, Howard Payne — which finished with 433 yards of total offense and three turnovers — answered Wayland Baptist’s go-ahead touchdown with 11:59 left with a six-play, 72-yard march to regain a 27-21 edge. The Yellow Jackets also re-sponded immediately last week after drop-ping a fourth-quarter advantage in their 30-27 win at Trinity.

Brandon Simpson, filling in for injured running back Zarron Dove who went down in the third period, caught a short pass from quarterback Richard Young and raced 45 yards to the end zone for the go-ahead touchdown with 9:57 remaining.

Young completed 19 of 40 passes for 221 yards with a pair of touchdowns and one in-terception. Eleven Yellow Jackets caught at least one pass, led by Cameron Wong who finished with three receptions for 62 yards and a touchdown.

Dove rushed for 64 yards, and after his absence the Yellow Jackets went to a run-ning back by committee mode that resulted in 56 yards from Davidson Jonathan, 42

from Devin Johnson, 36 from Justin Acosta, 20 and a touchdown from Richard Porche and 11 yards from Simpson.

Wayland Baptist scored twice on its first three possessions to carry a 14-7 lead into the second period. Campuzano connected with Stephen Malouf on a 36-yard scoring strike just 2:53 into the contest.

After HPU answered with an eight-play, 68-yard drive that ended with a 39-yard scoring strike from Young to Wong at the 10:04 mark, Campuzano hit Preston Wood-ard on a 54-yard touchdown completion with a 4:16 to go in the opening period.

The Pioneers were poised to take a two-score lead into halftime, but HPU linebacker Jason Disney — who led the team with 12 tackles — intercepted Campuzano with just over a minute remaining in the second period and returned the pick 78 yards to the WBU 17. Joshua Martinez connected on a 44-yard field goal with 10 seconds left in the half, and Howard Payne trailed just 14-10 at the break.

Howard Payne seized the lead for the first time with 5:25 left in the third when Porche scored on a 2-yard run. The run capped an 11-play, 60-yard drive for the Yellow Jackets which began after the 38-yard field goal at-tempt by WBU’s Nick Gary was blocked.

The Yellow Jackets increased their lead to 20-14 on the first play of the fourth period as Martinez drained a 36-yard field goal, which put the finishing touches on a 13-play, 58-yard trek for Howard Payne.

WBU quickly responded with an eight-yard, 75-play scoring drive that culminated with the Pioneers’ final points on a 32-yard touchdown pass from Campuzano to Landrum with 11:59 left, making the score 21-20.

The Yellow Jackets will be shooting for their first 3-0 start since 2006 when they welcome a second straight NAIA program — Southwestern Assemblies of God (0-1) — to Gordon Wood Stadium at 1 p.m. Saturday for HPU’s home opener.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Matt Holliday homered in the first inning for the second straight night and Shelby Miller pitched six solid innings and had an RBI double, leading the St. Louis Cardinals to a 5-4 victory over the Colorado Rockies on Saturday night.

Matt Carpenter added a two-run homer in the second for the NL Central leaders, who have won 12 in a row at home in the final month of the season dating to last Sept. 14. Of their 10 runs in the first two games of this series, seven have come in the first two innings.

The Cardinals are 9-4 this month and took a 3 1-2 game lead over Pittsburgh.

Wilin Rosario, Josh Rutledge and pinch-hitter Michael McHenry had an RBI apiece in the ninth and the Rockies put the tying run on second before Pat Neshek got pinch-hitter Rafael Ynoa to fly out for his sixth save in nine chances.

Miller (10-9) and Adam Wainwright, who won his 18th game Friday, combined for

13 strikeouts and no walks in 14 innings. Miller has allowed one run his last 20 in-nings over three starts, with a career-best 17 2-3 inning scoreless streak ending on Ben Paulsen’s RBI single in the fourth.

Randal Grichuk flied out to the wall in left field the at-bat before Holliday hit his 18th homer to straightaway center off Franklin Morales (6-8). Morales was one strike away from a perfect second when Pete Kozma walked on a full count, Miller followed with his fifth double and fourth RBI and Carpenter’s eighth homer made it 4-0.

Morales worked six scoreless innings to beat the Padres in his last start and permit-ted one homer his previous four outings. He needed 28 pitches to get through the first, with just one swing and miss, and gave up four runs in four innings.

The Rockies have mustered just four runs during a five-game losing streak. They entered the game batting .318 at home with 108 homers and .227 on the road with 60 homers.
