Binding is used mainly when documents are thicker than can be Wiro Bound or its anticipated that pages will need to be added at a later date. Costs are the same as Wiro Binding. Printed pages should have 15mm binding margins to ensure content isn’t punched through. This service can offer a same day turnaround.

Coated metal wires available in black, white & silver, accommodating A4 documents of just a few pages up to a block of print up to approximately 25mm in thickness. Wires can be cut to accommodate smaller documents or A4 short edge, and in some cases can be joined for binding larger A3 or A2 documents and sets of illustrations. We keep a range of types of card and acetate overlays which provide extra rigidity and durability to the bound document.

We mainly bind documents that have been printed in house but by agreement will bind supplied printed materials.

Documents can be bound in portrait or landscape orientations.

Prices start from £5.50 (plus printing cost) for simple smaller documents with clear covers and card backs. Additional charges may arise for complex requests such as Canadian & Half Canadian binding. Wiro bindings can be unbound if additional pages are to be added but the cost is the same as producing a new binding. Printed pages should have 15mm binding margins to ensure content isn’t punched through. This service can offer a same day turnaround.

We offer a wide range of binding services with a quick turnaround for all types ofdocuments, books, booklets and presentation materials.

LITHO PRINTED BOOKS & BOOKLETSWe can offer litho print on longer runs of booklets (250+ of one type) either saddle stitched or perfect bound. Depending on page count they can be more economic than digitally printed items. Lead times tend to be 7-10 working days with prices subject to page count, binding type and paper stock.

Documents that are printed and bound by us are Zero Rated for VAT. If we bind supplied pre-printed pages VAT is charged at the standard rate.

Please call your local office for more information or email [email protected]

We are now offering a range of creative papers in response to customer requests. Whilst these have been tested for print quality, we have not fully tested them for suitability for glue bindings. We also receive requests to print on Cartridge paper (140gsm & 160gsm). Print quality on this stock is variable so where possible we will show you test prints of indicative pages. Cartridge paper is not recommended for glue bindings but we will undertake this on request but under normal time

scales, not as express services.

These are not the industrial processes used for mass produced items and books should be handled with reasonable care to ensure their longevity. Any issues with documents should be noted within 7 working days and returned with your receipt if retrospective action is needed to resolve problems. Any offers to address issues reported after this time will be discretionary.

‘STEEL’ THERMAL BINDINGNarrow ‘U’ shaped channel with an acetate overlay on the front and the back of each, this does not require holes to be punched in the bound documents. Neater and less bulky than wire or comb binding, they will accommodate documents up to approximately 25mm in thickness. Black coated channels in stock, other colours available for long bespoke runs. Suitable only for A4 documents in portrait orientation. Prices start from £2.50 per document plus printing costs. This service can offer a same day turnaround.

Narrow ‘U’ shaped channel with black, hard back cover & spine – similar to a traditional hard back book. 3mm up to 24mm spine thickness. This process is suited to quick turnaround dissertation binding when gold blocking isn’t required. These A4 portrait only. Prices start from £8.00 per document plus printing costs. This service can offer a same day turnaround.

This specifically denotes the use of a fully printed hard back cover with internal pages bound in. The covers can be gloss, matt or soft touch laminated. The internal pages can be bound in three ways – EVA Glue, PUR Glue (as detailed on page 3) or stapled.

Stapled types have the greatest durability but the internal pages can be no more than 8mm in depth (paper thickness & type will alter the number of leaves in each case). As the sheets are stapled through (front to back &

back to front) we can include different papers that would not be suited to glue bindings.

Stapled case bindings can be any size up to A3 (portrait or landscape) – glued case bindings can be 297 x 297mm maximum but smaller bespoke sizes, A4 portrait & landscape, A5 portrait & landscape, 210 x 210mm are all achievable. Lead times are 2-3 working days depending on work flow.

‘VIP’ THERMAL BINDING

HARD BACK CHANNEL BINDING & GOLD BLOCKINGBound hard back book with digitally foiled lettering (from a supplied Word Document) on the front and embossed on the spine if required. These have a black matt buckram style cloth material cover.

Gold lettering can also be embossed on the front cover using a maximum of three lines top & bottom and a maximum of 32 letter characters (including spaces) on each line. As an additional element we can gold block a

single line of text on the spine of each book. The system is a clamp binding type and as such it can be opened up and have replacement pages inserted but there would be a nominal charge for this. Lettering can be metallic gold or silver if required. A4 portrait only.

Lead times are 1-2 working days generally for these types of bindings although for an additional charge we can offer same day services.

HARD BACK WIRO BINDINGA hybrid option using a hardback printed case cover with the internal pages wiro bound to the outer covers. This is a good option for design books and we can offer not only A4 portrait/landscape, A3 landscape/portrait & A2 landscape

(external wire only) options. These are durable documents and ideal for frequent use. Lead times for the services 2-3 working days subject to artwork. Prices start from £25.00 plus the printed page rate.

SADDLE STITCHED (STAPLED) BOOKLETSTo a finished size of A4 portrait or A5 portrait or landscape. Depending on paper thickness, we can produce booklets up to 48pp (printed pages) by this process. Booklets above this page count are subject to ‘creep’ on the inner pages so if ‘safety margins’ are not sufficient, content may be cut into on the centre pages. Documents must have pages in multiples of four (8, 12, 16, 20 etc) and should be supplied as multi-page PDF files (single sequential pages – not spreads) with suitable ‘safety borders’ and 3mm bleed. We can add

blank white pages in some cases if you have not included enough, however it is not always possible to add bleed so this should be checked before sending files to us. If in doubt please ask.

Covers can be printed on heavier stock and have matt or gloss lamination. We use a Square Back System which presses the fold to create a thin & neat spine. Prices start from £5.50 depending on page count.

PERFECT BINDINGIdeal for magazines and paper back/soft cover books. We can now offer digitally printed & perfect bound documents as one-off or short runs in a wide variety of sizes and thickness’. These are ideal for projects and dissertations where creative full colour printing is appropriate.

We can only Perfect Bind documents we print in house. As with Saddle Stitched documents we require PDF files with suitable ‘safety borders’ and bleed. In order to bind these types of documents they should have enough pages to create a spine, this generally being above 40pp (printed pages) or 20 leaves – thinner documents would be Saddle Stitched. We recommend using uncoated paper stock between 120gsm & 160gsm. Paper thicker than this isn’t flexible and can weaken the documents when users seek to flatten the pages when opening the books. Gloss and silk coated papers are less absorbent and can lead to weaker bindings. Soft covers can be matt, matt soft touch or gloss laminated. The process also uses specific endpapers to bind the pages into the spine - this means inside covers are unprinted and an unprinted ‘fly leaf’ appears at the front & back of each document.

We use two glue systems to make Perfect Bound & Case Bound books;

EVA Glue dries fairly quickly so normal turnaround is 2-3 working days depending on work-flow and the files supplied. In some case we can shorten this (although additional charges are made) but we do not recommend this. We do not recommend that you use multiple paper types as these will weaken the binding. Whilst weappreciate the use of tracing paper has creative possibilities, it does not bind well and may mean pages become lose and fall out of the document. Acetate has no absorbency and will not bind successfully, thicker papers also used to divide sections also create a weakness in the binding.

PUR Glue is much stronger than EVA Glue and will create a more durable binding. It will also allow slightly thicker stock and the use of tracing papers (not acetate). However, this glue type cures slowly over a period of time meaning lead times will be generally 3-4 working days. From the point a document is bound it requires 24hrs minimum before it can be handled. Costs for this option are slightly above EVA glue bindings.

IMPORTANT NOTESIn some cases, if work flow allows, shorter timescales may be possible but additional express charges will apply. Documents produced in time scales shorter than those advised may incur additional costs if we have to resolve issues arising with damaged documents, loose pages etc. We will do our best to consider particular bespoke items but additional costs may apply and in some cases we will advise against particular suggestions if we don’t think the processes we use are suitable. We will generally advise against using your own paper stocks. They can be unreliable both for printing and binding, page rates for print on supplied stock will be the same as using the stocks we carry.
