This issue I seem to be in a more bureaucratic mode. This last couple of weeks we have been trying to consolidate on the changes we have made to improve our school and the processes we use to make our school a more effective place for our students to learn. Sometimes paperwork is one of those necessary evils! Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) As many of you would be aware, during the year we have been surveying students, staff, parents and community about the expectations we have for our students. After analysing our data from responses to these surveys, our PBL data team has identified three standout expectations for our school. These are that we expect our students here at Binnaway to be: “Respectful, Responsible, Communicators”. Over the following weeks, we will be identifying what this means within our school context and how we would know if the these expectations are being met, and what behaviours would display these expectations. Accordingly, I will propose to the next P & C meeting that we “layer” these expectations into our signage and school mission statement. Please note that it is not intended that these expectations will be replacing our school motto of the “The effort, not the reward”. I will propose that the tagline “At Binnaway Central we are Respectful, Responsible, Communicators” will be inserted below our crest on signage, letterhead, and future uniform. I think it is important that we acknowledge our agreed expectations for the school, but also keep recognising our proud history and traditions. If you would like to know more about this, or wish to make a comment about these expectations, please don’t hesitate to contact me. Acceptable Use Policy for Mobile Phones and other Electronic Devices At our last P & C meeting I presented our revised “Acceptable use of Mobile Phones and other Electronic Devices” Policy. This has been in response to a review we have made since allowing students to bring and allow restricted mobile phone use at school. The main changes are that we are no longer sanctioning K-6 students bringing mobile phones or devices to Binnaway Central School. It was never really intended for K-6 students to bring phones and devices to school, and it has been found that many K-6 students do not have the skills or knowledge to correctly use or safely secure these devices.

Page 3: Binnaway Central School · 2020. 8. 20. · Binnaway has now been allocated a new School Police liaison officer, who is based in Dubbo (Snr Const Paice). Snr Const Paice will be visiting

Therefore as of June 27th, any K-6 student who is found to have a mobile phone or electronic device on them and does not have special dispensation from the Principal, the phone will be taken into school care until a parent /carer can come and claim the device from the school office. The other change is that we require secondary students and their parents to read and then sign the acceptable use policy if they wish to take their phone or device to school. This is so there is no confusion as to what the school expectations are and also the consequences if our expectations are not adhered to. We ask that the signed permission forms be returned to the school office if you give permission for your child to bring their phone /device to school. If there is no signed form then the school will confiscate the device until the relevant parent / can collect the device from school. This Policy and permission form are attached later in the newsletter. I will be presenting our revised Attendance Policy at the next P & C meeting. I urge you all to come along to the P& C meeting next month and have your say in helping us to improve our efforts in helping our school community! New School Police Liaison Officer – Anti cyberbullying and “online” safety Binnaway has now been allocated a new School Police liaison officer, who is based in Dubbo (Snr Const Paice). Snr Const Paice will be visiting our school on Thursday 9th June, and will be talking to students about online safety and the consequences of “cyber” bullying. He will also be running a parent information session on online safety at 10.30am on that morning. I am still negotiating a time for an evening information session for those parents who cannot make it during the day. Yr 11 and 12 Workplacement Next week most of our Yr 11 and 12 Vocational Education students will be staying in Dubbo so they can participate in Workplacements aligned to their courses. These compulsory placements are required in order to apply skills learnt at school into the workplace, and we have been fortunate enough to gain funding from a submission to the “School to Work” program written by Ms Wilson, Ms Gaynor and Ms Enks which has allowed the students to stay in Dubbo for the week rather than having to commute back and forth each day. The students will also gain some life skills in self -catering and housekeeping. Sporting news Congratulations to Marcus Nolan for making the NWSS Touch football side, and also I’d like to congratulate our open Touch football side that competed in Dubbo last week. The side was composed of boys from Year 5 through to year 12. The team played in the spirit of fair play and their “have a go” attitude made us all proud. Just a reminder… If there are any issue, tell us so we can fix it rather then tell the neighbours about it! Until next newsletter Ken White [email protected]

Half-way through Term 2, and therefore the school year already. Hard to believe we are already at the half-way mark of the 2016 academic year. This week Years 7 – 10 are completing their Half-Yearly exams. Reports will be soon written, and issued to parents. Year 11 reports are currently being completed and will be issued to parents. It is a good idea to discuss your child’s report with them, and then contact the school for a further discussion with your child’s teacher if you would like to. On Friday May 27th Ms Wilson accompanied a group of students from Years 5 – 12 who participated in a Central Schools Open Touch Footie Comp. Thank you to the Primary students who helped to provide the numbers for our team, and thank you also to our Secondary students who assisted with looking after our Primary students. Our senior students in particular showed the fine leadership skills they have for both their peers and the younger students. It is pleasing to see most of our Secondary students in uniform, or bringing a note to explain why they are out of uniform. We thank parents for your support on this issue. As the mornings in particular have a touch of frost about them, all students are encouraged to make sure they have a jumper or jacket with them at school. Some of our students are attending without wearing a jumper, or having one with them in their bag. Our students need to be warm at all times, so students are encouraged to ensure they always have a jumper in their bag if they are not wearing one. Secondary attendance is generally good, but parents are reminded that our Home School Liaison Officer (HSLO) Ms Smith visits our school regularly, and looks at our weekly attendance. Ms Smith is currently focusing on unexplained absences. Parents are reminded that they need to phone the school to inform us of the reason for any absences, or write a note explaining the reason for their child’s absence upon their return. This Friday is another fund-raiser organised by Miss Enks and Miss Wilson. Students from K – 12 will be able to have dinner and see a movie from 5.30 pm onwards. We encourage all students to attend and enjoy the evening’s entertainment. I will conclude with some lines from The Bird’s Nest by John Drinkwater: I know a place, in the ivy on a tree, Where a bird’s nest is, and the eggs are three, And the bird is brown, and the eggs are blue,

And the twigs are old, but the moss is new … Joan Fraser

Attendance Please remember that every day counts at school and all absences impact on the learning of individuals. If your child is unable to attend school due sickness or family needs please phone the school or send in a note promptly so that the absence can be explained. School Uniform Primary students look absolutely fabulous in their school uniforms. Thank you to parents for your support with this as wearing our school uniform shows pride in our school and helps students feel a sense of belonging. If your child is unable to wear the uniform please send a note, students will be sent to the office to borrow a clean uniform if out of uniform without a note. Child Protection All classes will be implementing Child Protection activities this term. If you do not want your child to participate please send sign the note that has been sent home to families and return to the office. 5/6 news Year 5/6 are working on the topic of Volcanoes. We are researching how scientists think the Earth was formed and the Earths composition. We are using reading comprehension strategies to investigate how volcanoes change the environment and how people manage living with Volcanoes. In Science we are investigating Information Technology and how advertisements are used to send a message, and the techniques used. Students will be making their own advertisements. Sara Reynolds

SHAKESPEARE IN BINNAWAY CATCH-UP

Shakespeare continues to be taught in all years from Kindie to Year 10 in Binnaway Central. Students have been learning some of the very descriptive language Shakespeare uses in his insults. Some examples of this are: Thou waggish onion-eyed canker blossom Thou peevish clay-brained hedge-pig Thou grizzled evil-eyed dog fish Years 2/3/4 have been learning about the difference in status between a master and servant, and the mechanicals or actors who are going to perform a play for King Theseus’ wedding. Peter Quince is a carpenter, Nick Bottom is a weaver, Francis Flute is a bellows-mender, Tom Snout is a tinker, Robin Starveling is a tailor, and Snug is a joiner. They have looked at their first piece of script from the play where the mechanicals meet to decide the roles they will be acting in the play they present to King Theseus. K/1/2 have been looking at the fairies in the play, and have created their own fairy character with a special name and special powers. They have also completed some drama activities in the Hall. Years 5/6 have begun their journey with Shakespeare, and will proceed to learn about the lovers and their adventures in the woods at night where the mischievous Puck will cause mayhem when he places a spell on the wrong person. On Friday June 3rd we are very excited to have Australia’s premier Shakespeare Arts Educator – Bell Shakespeare present an Immersive language workshop to K – 6. The workshop will be presented by the character of Puck from A Midsummer’s Night Dream. The workshop will extend the students’ experience and enjoyment of Shakespeare, as well as developing their knowledge of Shakespeare and his language. Joan Fraser
