Bush Dance The kangaroos had tuxedos on. The cockatiels and the galahs were in the trees with a disco ball. The lizards and the budgerigar’s were playing cards. Well the emus, they were running amuck. The fat pelican, he was being a guts eating pizza. Everyone loved the party. Then the disco floor batteries ran out of power. Lucky the budgerigars and the cockatiels knew where the spare batteries were. The budgerigars and the cockatiels set off to find the batteries. They went to the batteries shop, got a battery, brought the batteries to the party, and put them in the disco floor. Hooray for the budgerigars and the cockatiels.

Sam Conlan – 2nd Prize Upper Primary Year 5/6 Short Story

    The Music in the Woods

Late at night, When owls take flight,

You can hear a great treat, A delightful and jazzy kind of beat,

Head through the wood, You will find something quite good,

A deserted ball, There is no one at all,

But continue to spy, And you will see something fly,

A tiny sparrow, Its beak sharp as an arrow,

Soon animals will arrive, And start up a jive,

They will all start to dance, They will jump and they will prance,

And although it started out mild, Things will get wild,

Glass will smash, Fists will bash,

And when the animals have stopped being mean, The party is over and they will start to clean,

And pretty soon nothing will remain, The forest will be the same,

So now, to you it is clear, Why they only do this once a year,

It will be a while before they prance, For only once a year do they dance the bush

    dance.

    Dogs make the best pets

If you say dogs do not make the best pets I will probably have lots of reason why they do. Let’s get down to business. Dogs actually love you and give you hugs unlike cats they just scratch you. Cats also hide and take over the house and hiss at you . Secondly, you can take dogs for a walk. It is so much fun and you are getting fit. Walking makes you get outside and you aren’t sitting on the couch getting fat. Dogs save people’s lives like police dogs that sniff out bad guys, unlike cats. They are just lazy. Another way dogs help people is they dig up people if they get buried in an avalanche. If none of these reasons convince you that dogs are the best pet nothing will. By Max

    Year 6 Young Leaders Reports

Yay, a seven and a half hour bus trip to Sydney! We left Binya at 7.20am, got to Sydney at 3.30pm, and then checked in to the Ultimo Hotel near Darling Harbour and the ICC, where the Young Leader’s Conference was being held. We went with lots of other students from lots of different schools. For tea we went to Darling Harbour and had time exploring the big city of Sydney. There was 4 speakers John Coutis, Matt Cosgrove, Harrison Craig and Lauren Cheatle and of course DJ Ralf and Jemma. On the way home, we went to Yass service station for dinner and arrived home at 10.15 pm. By Bailey

    Harrison Craig

If you had a stutter and have been bullied at school, would you have the guts to go up on stage and audition for the Voice? Harrison Craig was the third speaker at Young Leaders. He auditioned for the Voice in

2013. He was bullied through school but he persevered to continue and pursue his dreams. Harrison Craig got all the judges to turn around at the blinds audition and he picked Seal to mentor him. Harrison is a great leader because he showed us how important it is to dream, have goals and to persevere. I wonder what those bullies thought when Harrison won the Voice? At the end of his time the hosts, DJ Raff and Jemma, got him to sing the song ‘Angels’. His voice melts my heart. I really enjoyed Harrison Craig speaking at the conference. By Claire

Matt Cosgrove Snow White turns into a muscle bound snowman, The Little Mermaid becomes a robo-zombie mermaid and Little Red

Riding Hood is now a crazy little stunt man on a motorbike! I know what you’re thinking whose crazy imagination is this!? Matt Cosgrove’s that’s who. On Monday the 13th of March, the Year 6’s of Binya P.S went to Sydney for the National Young Leaders Day and the fourth speaker (my personal favourite) was Matt Cosgrove. Matt is a successful author who writes the Epic Fail Tales, hilarious retellings of lame fairy tales. Matt spoke about resilience and doing what you love. He talked about how he illustrated the kid book series Banjo the Kangaroo and would you believe it he hated it. He said that it wasn’t what he wanted to do as an illustrator so after a while he was given a different book to illustrate and he liked it a bit more but it was still that happy ever after trash that he had grown up despising. Later he came up with the idea to go against what most publishers want and came up with the ideas for Epic Fail Tales. It promised to have none of the cliché unoriginal things that appear in all fairy tales. That means no handsome princes, no sloppy kisses and most of all no happy endings! Matt loved the idea but a lot of publishers didn’t, he was rejected time and time again but he showed heaps of resilience and never gave up until one publisher accepted the idea! Matt’s speech was incredible and inspiring. By Sam

Lauren Cheatle Lauren Cheatle one of the “Sydney 6’ers” talking about her life to thousands and thousands of people on a stage. She was not afraid,

what a brave lady. Lauren Cheatle is an Australian cricket player. She was born on 6th of November 1998 in Bowral New South Wales and she is now a 19-year-old girl playing cricket for the “Sydney 6’ers” and she is one of the bowlers for the team. Her batting style is left-hand bat and her bowling style is left-arm fast-medium. Lauren told me these two very, very important saying: “if you don’t challenge yourself, you don’t change yourself” & “you don’t need a title”. By Greer John Coutis

Being thrown in a flaming dumpster, legs being ripped open , consistent teasing, all this happened to one man!!! And the man is John Coutis. John Coutis was born in 1969. He was so small that when he was born he could fit in the palm of your

hands!!! The doctors said to his parents that he wasn’t going live for a day! He was so small he was put in a dolls dress but he lived!!! He had no working legs and walked on his hands. When he was a kid, his best friend was a guy named Kenny. He had cerebral palsy on 90% of his body. When he went to school for the first time he was in Year 5!!! Every day he would run behind the bags and hide (poor guy). He became strong, and chose his own life, despite the bad things. He is now married and a great speaker. I liked him because he was very resilient. By Leo
