biodiversity heritage information online!
DESCRIPTION
Presentation at the "Berliner Bibliothekswissenschaftliches Kolloquium" at the Berlin School of Library and Information Science, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (http://www.ibi.hu-berlin.de/school), January 17th 2012 (Slides in German)Natural history museums and botanical gardens hold vast amounts of scientific descriptions and specimen related to the world’s biodiversity in their libraries, archives and collections. But most of this biodiversity heritage information is not easily accessible for scientists and the general public. Thus European natural history institutions are digitising this information in the context of EC projects and global initiatives. They are making them available online through Europeana and other expert systems and services like the Biodiversity Heritage Library and the Global Biodiversity Information Facility. The presentation will give an introduction to biodiversity heritage information, the corresponding infrastructure and services. It will also elaborate on the user groups and how they can benefit from this information ecology.TRANSCRIPT

Naturhistorische Institute
• Botanische Gärten, Botanische Museen, Naturkundemuseen:– Sammlung(en)– Bibliothek(en)– Archiv(e)– Forschungseinrichtung– Ausstellungen
• Multimedial, multidisziplinär, multiorganisatorisch• Zugang zu Informationen ist eine organisatorische
Herausforderung Naturhistorische Institute > Probeme

Problem

CC0 Paradoxon
• “Metadata related to the digitised objects produced by the cultural institutions should be widely and freely available for re-use” – ‘The new Renaissance’, report by the Comite des Sages on bringing
Europe’s cultural heritage on-line, 10 january 2011• “The person who associated a work with this deed has
dedicated the work to the public domain by waiving all of his or her rights to the work worldwide under copyright law, including all related and neighboring rights, to the extent allowed by law.You can copy, modify, distribute and perform the work, even for commercial purposes, all without asking permission.“ – http://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/
CC0 Paradoxon
![Page 29: Biodiversity Heritage Information Online!](https://reader033.vdocument.in/reader033/viewer/2022052523/5559fbb3d8b42aa8098b4b70/html5/thumbnails/29.jpg)
@b0ja @africamuseumbe #BHLib 29
CC0 Paradoxon
Metadaten = Wissenschaftliche Forschungsdaten. Forscher und Forschungseinrichtungen brauchen Referenzierung (cc-by), manche wollen kommerzielle Nutzung ausschließen (cc-by-nc).
• Führt möglicherweise zu restriktiverer Datenübergabe an Europeana als gewünscht.
