Lincoln Middle School Advancement Via Individual Determination A.V.I.D Application 2018-2019 Dear Families, Thank you for your interest in the AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) program. AVID is a seventh through twelfth grade program that prepares students in the “academic middle” for admission to a four-year college or university. The AVID program provides middle and high school students with the skills needed to be successful in advancing academically with the ultimate goal of attending college. For more than 25 years AVID has been instrumental in preparing students for success in higher education. The core component of the AVID Program is the AVID elective, which supports students as they challenge themselves in more rigorous classes. Students are taught study skills, note taking, time management, writing and research skills, while being immersed in a college-going culture. The class also includes tutorial sessions that are led by college students and provide support for success in an academically rigorous curriculum. Additionally, the AVID class provides access to information about colleges and universities through fieldtrips, guest speakers, college tutors, scholarship opportunities and college admission requirement information. AVID recruits students from the academic middle who are motivated to do well and who are serious about their academic future. Students are recruited for AVID based on G.P.A. and state test results. First generation college-bound students and students who represent traditionally underrepresented ethnic and cultural groups are also encouraged to apply. In order to be considered for AVID, students must complete all steps of the application process. 1. Complete and turn in this application, along with the family information and short answer sheet. Dear Families,

Thank you for your interest in the AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) program. AVID is a seventh through twelfth grade program that prepares students in the “academic middle” for admission to a four-year college or university. Estimadas familias, Gracias por su interés en el programa AVID (Determinación avanzada vía individual, siglas en inglés: AVID). AVID es un programa del séptimo y al duodécimo grado que prepara a los estudiantes académicamente para la admisión a una Universidad. El programa AVID proporciona a los estudiantes de secundaria y de preparatoria con las habilidades necesarias para tener éxito en el avance académico con el objetivo de asistir a la Universidad. Durante más de 25 años AVID ha sido fundamental en la preparación de estudiantes para el éxito en la educación superior. El componente principal del programa AVID es la clase electiva de AVID, que apoya a los estudiantes como desafiándolos en clases más rigurosas. Los alumnos aprenden técnicas de estudio, tomar notas, administrar productivamente su tiempo, escribir e investigar con habilidad mientras estén inmersos en una cultura universitaria. La clase también incluye sesiones de tutoría que están dirigidas por estudiantes universitarios y proporcionan apoyo para el éxito en un riguroso plan de estudios. Además, la clase AVID proporciona acceso a información sobre colegios y universidades a través de excursiones, invitados, profesores de universidades, oportunidades de becas e información de los requisitos de admisión a universidades.  El AVID  recluta a estudiantes de la secundaria académica que están motivados de ser aplicados en sus clases y que piensan en serio acerca de su futuro académico. Los estudiantes son reclutados para el AVID basándose en los resultados de la prueba estatal y de su GPA (promedio de grados reflejados en puntos). Los estudiantes de primera generación con miras a la universidad y los que representan tradicionalmente a grupos étnicos y culturales por debajo de su representación, se les anima también a que soliciten estar en este programa.  Para ser considerados para el AVID, los estudiantes deben completar todos los pasos del proceso.
