Personal Statement I am a ‘citizen’ or lay scientist. When my children were diagnosed in 1994 with a rare genetic condition I became an unexpected activist, community organizer, advocate, and researcher. I founded an advocacy organization in 1995, created the first lay run registry and biobank, and after a few years of wet bench work, discovered the gene for the condition. I organized both the affected individuals and the researchers into productive communities. Noting the tremendous need and lack of systematic solutions, I moved to a leadership position in a coalition of health advocacy organizations - Genetic Alliance. In my 13 years in this organization, I have created more than 200 tools that are leveraged by other lay leaders to transform biomedical research. In 2003, I founded Genetic Alliance Registry and BioBank, a shared infrastructure for any condition, allowing cross-condition and co-morbidity studies. More recently I have partnered with a privacy startup to create a public-private partnership allowing individuals to determine how, with whom, and when to share their health information. This dynamic and granular preference platform is called Platform for Engaging Everyone Responsibly and is now part of the Patient Powered Research Network of the Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute, and has been deployed across 30 communities. These include disease specific organizations, and other communities with affinities around life course or causes. In addition, I successfully administered more than $30M in competitively won grants (e.g. staffing, research protections, budget), collaborated with researchers, patients and families, and published more than 130 peer-reviewed publications. I am excellent at representing the consumer/patient/participant voice, and also working within the traditional research enterprise. I am a team player, and systems level strategist, and visionary working to alleviate suffering and increase health. My early contributions to science purposefully mimicked a traditional path, though I lacked any formal science training or funding. I wanted to accelerate research on pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PXE) and determined that I had to earn scientific credibility. Borrowing lab bench space at night, together with my husband, I discovered the gene (ABCC6) associated with pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PXE) and patented it to be sure it would be openly licensed. Creative, long-tail, engagement methods enabled the aggregation of health information from 4000 individuals affected by PXE (PXE affects 1/100,000 people). Analyzing this information led to a well- characterized cohort, hypotheses about biomarkers, the discovery that the condition was a metabolic condition, and a robust natural history of the condition. Subsequent discoveries focused on participant- centered outcomes that led to improvements in standard of care. These include recognizing that mineralization in breast tissue is a typical PXE manifestation, and biopsy is not needed, advising that placental calcification is part of PXE and it doesn’t affect the fetus or the mother, and advising that men with PXE and testicular microlithiasis do not have to be monitored for testicular cancer. Most recently we have launched a randomized clinical trial that will end this month after two years. Finally, just this summer we discovered a
