Biography

Dr. A.J. Umbarkar has received his Bachelor of Engineering (BE) in Computer

Engineering from PICT, Pune in year 1999 and his Master of Engineering (ME) from

Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) from WCE, Sangli in year 2002. He is PhD from

Government College of Engineering, Aurangabad affiliated to Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar

Marathwada University, Aurangabad, MS, in year 2016.

Currently he is working as an Assistant Professor in Department of Information

Technology at Walchand College of Engineering, Sangli, since 2004. He has worked in

administration as head of the department for around in computer engineering at

B.V.C.O.E. Kolhapur and Information Technology department at W.C.E. Sangli.

He has filed two Patents and 1 trademark on his name. He has total 15 years of

experience of teaching. He has published 19 papers in reputed (Science indexed and

Scopus indexed) journal and 17 papers in national and international conferences. He is

reviewer in one IEEE, three Elsevier, 2 Inderscience and many others journals in the

area of soft computing. He worked as program committee member as well as reviewer

PHD Thesis title: “Design and Analysis of Multi-Population Genetic Algorithm (MPGA) on Multicore system for Function Optimization”

Abstract: The Genetic Algorithms (GAs) metaheuristic deals with large scale combinatorial

optimization problems. It is biologically inspired method based on the principle of

survival of the fittest. In GAs, concept of multiple population offers advantage of population diversity. However, as the population evolves, the GA loses its

diversity and sometimes it cannot avoid the local optima problem (also known as

Premature Convergence of GAs). Population diversity problem and premature convergence problem are associated with most of the metaheuristics. Dual

Population Genetic Algorithm (DPGA), which uses reserve population for

providing additional diversity to the main population through crossbreeding not only solves the problem of premature convergence but also helps algorithm to

converge early. Nowadays, multi-core systems are getting cheaper and common. The Binary

encoded Multithreaded Parallel DPGA (MPDPGA) over multicore systems is

proposed to solve the problems of population diversity and premature convergence. To improve the performance of MPDPGA, a threaded parallel

version of DPGA over multi-core system, with improved fitness function for

reserve population, is proposed in the work. The proposed algorithm is

experimented on standard unimodal and multimodal benchmark problems; its statistical performance is compared with simple GA (SGA) and serial DPGA

(SDPGA). Results obtained, show that, the MPDPGA significantly outperforms

SDPGA and SGA in terms of reliability (success rate), efficacy (mean, standard deviation and standard error of mean) and efficiency (function evolution).

Novelties/Contributions:

1. Parallel design of DPGA (called MPDPGA or PDPGA) is proposed. It works

efficiently on a multicore system. (contribution)

2. In MPDPGA, the computationally effective fitness function is proposed for reserve population. (contribution)

3. The population diversity and premature convergence problems are solved

and convergence rate improved. (contribution) Research Interests
