These slides were shown at the start of the Bioinformatics Education and Training session at InCoB 2014. This breakout session on bioinformatics education and training was organised as part of InCoB 2014 to foster networking and exchange of best teaching and learning practice in the region. The session is sponsored by a Connection Grant from the Australian Bioinformatics Network and Australian presentations will be collated into an online resource providing a snapshot of Australian bioinformatics education and training initiatives. Session motivation and description: Learning, education and training are regularly identified in surveys as the top needs of bioinformatics users. The field is fragmented, with many successful endeavours, but lack of communication and networking means that many educators develop their curricula in isolation and often have to reinvent the wheel. Several professional groups including ISCB and EMBnet have provided forums for communication and exchange of ideas among bioinformatics educators, but their efforts have not had much penetration in the Asia-Pacific region. More recently GOBLET has formed with the specific goal of promoting education and training in computational biology and provide resources and forums for supporting educators in this field. This session aimed to bring together educators and trainers in computational biology for networking and exchange of ideas. It is intended as the first in an ongoing series of networking events with a focus on bioinformatics education and training in the Asia-Pacific region.
