Evaluation A. SCHOOL BASED (COURSE) MARK: • Marks for this class are cumulative

(Each terms mark will be a continuous running total from the beginning of the course). • Marks are awarded for summative work only.

The IB Programme challenges student learning by enriching knowledge and skills associated with the outcomes of the Alberta Learning Programme of Studies. Students who demonstrate evidence of their ability to apply enhanced knowledge and skills on these outcomes through classroom summative assessments will have credit manually applied to the School Awarded Grade.

Summative Assessments = 100% Unit Tests (UT) = 70% Other Summative Assessments* = 30%

*Other Summative Assessments include: In Class Work Sheets (ICWS), Quizzes (Q), Labs (LB), Investigations (INV), Case / Computer Studies (CS), Projects (P), IB Internal Assessment (IA) The IA will be evaluated using the IB Internal assessment Criteria (attached) Students will be required to create a portfolio of their practical work.

Formative Assessments** = 0% **Formative Assessments include” Homework (HWK), Activities (ACT), and other practice work done in preparation for a summative assessment. Formative Assessments are vital to enhancing skills used during summative work.

B. IB DIPLOMA MARK: Your IB Diploma Mark will be calculated as follows:

Evaluation Protocol Due Dates Assignments are due at the beginning of the class on the assigned due

date. Late Assignments

• If the late is excused due to an excused absence, ensure that the excused note is brought in to the office as soon as possible so that the computer records show it as an excused absence.

• If the late is excused due to another reason, ensure that a legitimate parental note accompanies the assignment during hand in. Unexcused late submissions will be dealt with by the teacher.

Missed Summative Assessments

• These are to be made up during an exam hall: • Tuesday – During PLT • Thursday – After School 12:35-1:55

• You may sign up for an exam hall in the classroom with the teacher Academic Honesty & Integrity

• Any form of academic dishonesty is not tolerated. • Please see school web site to read the full Academic Honesty and

Integrity Policy • For the abbreviated version, please see the last page of this course

outline. Power School Updates and Codes

• Marks on power school are updated regularly. • The following codes may be seen on power school:

Flag or Icon Description

Indicates that an assignment was collected.

Indicates that an assignment is late.

Indicates that an assignment is missing.

Indicates that an assignment is exempt.

Indicates that an assignment wasn’t completed due to the student being absent.

Indicates that an assignment is incomplete.

Indicates that a comment was added.

Indicates that evidence exists for mastery that may differ from a student’s calculated standard score.

Please Note: A wide range of assessment information is used in the development of a student’s final grade. At Archbishop MacDonald High School, individualized assessments provide specific information regarding student progress and overall performance in class. Student assessment may vary from student to student to adapt for differences in student needs, learning styles, preferences, and paces. It should also be noted that not all assignments are used to determine the final grade, and that scale factors may have been used to determine the weight of individual assignments.

Student Responsibility Respect • Please respect the learning environment by:

• Listening to the lesson. • Listening to questions raised during the lesson. • Participating in a respectful manner.

Notes • This course will require the student to bring in a copy of the notes package posted on virtual classroom.

• Students may bring in notes as a hard copy or on computer. • It is recommended that students take supplementary notes in class based

on class discussions and concept emphasis. Supplies • Please bring the following items to class:

• Notes (Extracted from V.C): in your choice of format (digital or hard copy)

• Black /Blue Pen or Pencil for Writing. • Red Pen or a Color other than Black / Blue or Pencil for Marking. • Pencil, Eraser and Ruler for graphing. • Highlighter for highlighting. • A Calculator for calculations. • A Note Book for doing summary notes and problems

Dates & Deadlines

• Unit dates (assessments) will be posted for student reference. • They are posted as a full unit’s deadlines in advance. • It is your responsibility to complete and submit items on time.

Food • No Scented food will be allowed into the classroom (this is to prevent the room from smelling like a cafeteria and maintain an undistracted learning environment.

• You may have unscented snacks if they do not disturb the learning environment (that is, they are not seen, heard or smelled).

Attendance • Attendance is taken at the beginning of class. • If you are not present and sitting in your assigned seat during attendance,

you will be marked absent. • If you are entering class with an excused late, you will need to obtain a late

slip from the office, sign-in on the ‘late sheet’ and place your late slip in the ‘late bin’ in the class.

• If you are entering class with an unexcused late, the office will not provide you with a late slip. You must sign in on the ‘late sheet’ and identify a reason for your late.

• Frequent unexcused lateness will result in parental and grade coordinator contact, where a contract will be drawn to resolve attendance issues. Breach of this contract will result in a school referral to the Attendance Board.

Missed Classes

• If you miss a class or several classes due to excused reasons it is your responsibility to obtain the missing notes and / or make up the missing work.

• You may choose to get notes from a friend, or from virtual classroom. • You can make up missed summative assessments by signing up for an exam

hall. Help • I am available upon request for extra help sessions.

• I may also be contacted in person or through email at [email protected] to ask for extra help

• You may also email me quick questions that arise during your out of class work.

IB DP Sciences- Internal Assessment Criteria

Internal assessment details Internal assessment component Duration: 10 hours Weighting: 20% • Individual investigation. • This investigation covers assessment objectives 1, 2, 3 and 4. Internal assessment criteria The new assessment model uses five criteria to assess the final report of the individual investigation with the following raw marks and weightings assigned:

Personal Engagement This criterion assesses the extent to which the student engages with the exploration and makes it their own. Personal engagement may be recognized in different attributes and skills. These could include addressing personal interests or showing evidence of independent thinking, creativity or initiative in the designing, implementation or presentation of the investigation.

Exploration This criterion assesses the extent to which the student establishes the scientific context for the work, states a clear and focused research question and uses concepts and techniques appropriate to the Diploma Programme level. Where appropriate, this criterion also assesses awareness of safety, environmental, and ethical considerations.

Students must read, understand and act in accordance with the Academic Honesty Policy of Archbishop MacDonald High School, which will be posted tot eh website and embedded in the course outlines. It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that all work submitted is authentic in all respects. Work submitted is inclusive of written, oral, creative or other forms of assessment for a course. A student must be aware of and purposefully ensure that they are demonstrating appropriate academic behaviours as it relates to:

Consequences Students are expected to value the attitudes and skills of being a principled communicator in all learning and assessment. Consequences for those who compromise the academic honesty and integrity policy to gain an advantage are listed below. The administration [Grade Coordinator] in conjunction with the teacher, from whose class the offence occurred, has the authority to impose one or more of the following consequences.

A comment referring to the student’s lack of academic honesty will be reported on the student’s records. A zero will be awarded for that particular assignment/exam. All extracurricular involvement may be suspended until the protocol reaches its logical conclusion. Students reported and recorded with an incident of academic misconduct will be monitored during

the school year. In addition to the above sanctions, the administration [grade coordinator], has the authority to impose one or more of the following:
