I. Objectivesa) Discuss the ways in which heat transfers between organisms and their

environment.b) Discuss the thermal balance of organisms.c) Discuss the metabolic and physiological meansd) Distinguish among poikilothermy, homeothermy, and heterothermy.e) Explain how animal behaviour, structure and metabolism maintain body

II. Subject Mattera) Subject: Temperature

b) References: textbook “ Elements of Ecology”Robert Leo SmithThomas M,.Smith pp. 56-70

c) Materials : Pictures,Powerpoiont, projector,book

d) Science Concept : Temperature has a pervasive influence on life It is a key for climate, microclimate and distributions of organism

e) Process Skills : Observing, Describing and differentiating

III. ProcedureA. ENGAGE

Heat transfer song

Checking the attendance Motivation

Present a video Discuss how heat move between organisms and

their environment

B. EXPLORE Setting of the standards to be followed in doing the activity

Page 2: Biology1.docx

Group them into four Let them perform the activity

C. EXPLAIN Discussion / Analysis

Answer the following questions1) How do temperature influence life on earth ?2) How do plants build up a tolerance to or adjust to cold?

To heat?3) How does heat move between organism and the

environment?4) Distinguish between poikilothermy and homeothermy.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of each?5) What are the relationship of body size, metabolic rate, and

temperature regulation?6) What behaiviors help poikilotherms maintain a constant

body temperature?7) How can insulation maintain an animals thermal integrity?

GeneraliztionAll organisms live in a thermal environment. They must balance heat inputs and outputs between themselves and their environment. Heat gains come from direct and reflected sunlight, diffuses radiation, long wave infrared radiation, conduction, convection and evaporation. Organism can have a net loss of heat to the environment only when the current environmental temperature is less than body core temperature

D. ELABORATE Illustrate through concept map / mind map your own explanation

or idea on how heat transfers between organism and their environment

E. EVALUATION Modify true or false

1) All oragnisms lives in and exchange energy with a thermal environment.

2) Conduction takes place when fluid (air and water) move over an object.

3) When the surrounding or ambient temperature is lower than the temperature of the organism, the organism loses heat to the environment

4) Poikilotherms employs both endothermy and ectothermy depending upon the environment situation.

5) Evaporationis the loss of moisture from a surface

Identification1) Emission of long wave radiation radient energy striking a

surface is absorbed and then converted to heat.

2) The range of body temperature at which poikilotherms carry out their daily activities.

3) It emphasize the mechanism that determine temperature4) It represents the nature of body temperature5) Are animals that can maintain a constant body

temperature despite the changes in the environment
