Limiting Factor Conditions of a biome which “limit” or determine if organisms can survive within that environment.

Desert Biome

Characteristics of a desert Dry (less than 25cm of precipitation a year)

Extreme temperatures Mineral rich Sand, rocks, barren Rain comes in the form of sudden thunderstorms, flash floods

Desert classifications 1) Hot Desert- HOT most of the year. Ex. Sahara, Gobi, Sonoran

2) Cold Desert- COOLER temps but generally still receive little precipitation throughout the year. Ex. Sierras, Rocky Mts.

Desert Limiting Factors 1) Lack of Water (dry) 2) Extreme temperature ranges

Desert adaptations Spines on cactus

Roots (deep to get to water)

Roots (shallow and fanned out)

Scales/Shells (reduce water loss)

Burrowing organisms

Nocturnal

Big ears
