DearBMESSponsor,TheBiomedicalEngineeringSociety(BMES)atUCLAisastudent-runchapterthatisdedicatedtopromotingandenhancingthefieldofbiomedicalengineering.OurorganizationwasestablishedatUCLAin2000andcurrentlyhasover200members,withmembershipfromalargemajorityofstudentsintheDepartmentofBioengineeringandfullsupportfromthefacultyandstaffoftheBioengineeringdepartment.BMESatUCLAstrivestoensurethatanystudentinterestedinbioengineeringachievessuccesswithregardstotheiracademicandcareergoals.Byprovidingstudentswithtechnicaltraining,professionaldevelopmentresources,academicadvising,andavenuesforeducationaloutreach,weaimtofurthereducateandpreparebioengineeringstudentsforsuccessintheirfuturecareerpaths.UndergraduateandgraduatestudentsareactivelyinvolvedinBMES,andthesocietycontinuestoprovidethemwithaplatformthroughwhichtodevelopcloseandpersonalrelationshipswiththebioengineeringfacultyandstaff.Afterspeakingwithalumniandindustryrepresentativesthepastfewyears,werealizedtheneedforgreaterfocusonreal,hands-onengineeringexperienceattheuniversitylevel.Lastyear,welaunchedthefirstofourtechnicalprojectswiththeBMESatUCLAECGBuildTeam,aproject-basedprogramwherefirst-andsecond-yearstudentsgotafirst-handintroductiontocircuitryandcodingthroughbuildingtheirveryownArduino-basedElectrocardiogram.Thisyear,weareaddinganotherprogramtothemix,theBMESatUCLACompetitionDesignteam,anintermediate-levelteamwherestudentswillbuildtheirownmedicaldeviceandputittothetestatvariousbioengineeringdesigncompetitions.Facultyadvisors,monthlyworkshops,andextensiveteamcollaborationwillprovideclubmemberswithpracticalandapplicabletechnicalknowledgetofurthertheirunderstandingofbioengineeringfundamentalsandstrengthentheirrepertoireforfuturecareersinbioengineering.OnbehalfofBMESatUCLA,Iinviteyoutolookthroughoursponsorshippackage.Inreturnforyourinvestmentinourorganization,weofferextensivepublicityofyourcompanyinrecognitionofyourdonation,discountedparticipationinourannualScienceVendorExposition,andmanyotherbenefits.YoursupportwillleadtotheenrichmentoftheeducationalexperienceofUCLAbioengineers,ensuringthatthefuturewillbefilledwithexceptionalproblemsolvers,medicalpractitioners,andresearcherswhowillenableoursocietytothrive.Thankyouforyourtimeandcontribution,EvaChen2017-2018BMESatUCLAPresident

Events and Programs BMESatUCLAholdsavarietyofeventsandprogramseveryyear,rangingfromcompanysitevisitstoclassplanningworkshops.Theseprogramsfallunderfourcategories:technicalskillsdevelopment,careerdevelopment,academic/professionalskillbuilding,andcommunityoutreach,andareallorganizedbydedicatedboardmembers.
Projects TechnicalSkillsDevelopmentBMESECGBuildTeamTheElectrocardiogram(ECG)BuildTeamisanannual,year-longprojectstartedlastyearwhere30-40studentsaretaskedwithbuildingtheirveryownECGfrombasematerials.Studentswillbedividedintoseveralsmallgroupsthroughouttheyear.EachgroupwillproduceoneECGaswellasbeassignedseveralsmalltake-homeassignmentsdesignedtoreinforcethematerialoncircuitryandprogrammingthattheylearn.Studentswhoareapartofthisprogramneednopriorexperiencebuildingmedicaldevices,astheECGBuildTeamProjectManagersareresponsibleforteachingthemthenecessarybasiccircuitryandprogrammingskills.Morespecifically,studentswilllearnskillsthatincludebutarenotlimitedto:
• Understandingtheconceptsofcurrent,voltage,capacitance,andresistanceaswellastherelationshipsbetweenthem
• Readinganddesigningcircuitdiagrams• Identifyingthedifferentcomponentsofacircuit• Configuringphysicalcircuitsonbreadboardswithappropriatematerials• UnderstandinghowtoreadandwritebasiccodeforArduino• Identifyingtheinputs,outputs,differentfunctions,andpurposeofanArduino™device• IntegratingknowledgeofC/C++andcircuitytocreatesimpleArduino™mechanisms• Troubleshootingforbothcircuitsandcode• Collaboratingwithotherstudentstoproduceafinalproduct• Comprehendingthedesignandcreationprocessofamedicaldevice

BMESDesignTeamFromthesuccessoflastyear’sBuildTeamwehaveexpandedtoincludeamoreintermediate-leveldesignteamwhichwillparticipateinbioengineeringdesigncompetitionssuchastheDEBUTcompetitionandBMESDesignCompetition.TheprojectthattheBMESCompetitionDesignTeamwillbetoworkingonthisyearisthedesignandfabricationofasmallportabledevicethatwouldassistwithphysicalrecoveryofmusculoskeletalinjuriesthroughthefollowingfeatures:
• Asmallaccelerometerandgyroscopemountedonabracetomonitor3Dmovementandprovidelivefeedbacktothepatientontheprogressoftheirrecovery.
• Apressuresensorsoleinserttobeusedwiththe3Dmotionsensoronthebrace,inordertoretrieveadditionalpatientdata.
• Aphysicaltherapygameappwithpre-loadedexercises(abletobemodifieddependingontheinjury)thatgradestheuserontheirexecutionoftheexercise.
Benefitsoftheseremotepatientmonitoringdevicesinclude:• Increasingthepatientmovementdataavailabletophysicaltherapistsorspecialists• Ensuringproperformofnecessaryrehabilitationactivitieswhichhelpslowerre-injury
rates• Reducingcostforpatientsbyloweringpost-surgery/post-injurycomplications
Events CareerDevelopmentIndustryInfoSessions▫ Theseinfosessionsarestructuredby
beginningwithformalpresentationsfollowedbyameet-and-greetbetweenstudentsandcompanyrepresentatives.
▫ Theyprovideinvaluablenetworkingopportunitiesforstudentsandconcentrateasmallpoolofcompetitiveapplicantsforrecruitmentforbothsummerinternshipandfull-timehiresoftopbioengineeringundergraduateandgraduatestudents.
