This book outlines a system that subdivides the Earth into a hierarchy of increasingly finer-scale ecosystems that can sever as a consistent framework for ecological analysis and management. Delineating units involves identifying the environmental factors controlling the spatial geography of ecosystems at various levels and drawing boundaries where they change significantly. Macroscale units (ecoregions) are climatically controlled and delineated as Köppen-Trewartha climate zones. Nested within these are landscape mosaics, the mesoscale units, controlled by landform and delineated by Hammond’s landform regions. At the microscale are individual sites controlled by topographically determined topoclimate and soil moisture regimes.

SELLING POINTS: There are new sections on how ecoregion boundaries were determined, ecoregion

redistribution under climate change, ecosystem processes (such as fire regimes), empirical versus genetic approaches, and human modification (such as invasive species)

A wide variety of problems in engineering and applied science can be formulated as diffusion processes on motion groups. Often, underlying phenomena associated with diffusion processes on motion groups have been rediscovered in the context of each new application area studied, and ad-hoc solution techniques have been derived each time. This textbook takes the unique perspective of presenting underlying equations that are the same in a variety of fields to develop an elegant solution technique based on concepts from noncommutative harmonic analysis.Featuring extensive exercises and applications to optical communication systems, semi-flexible polymers, robotic manipulators, steerable needles, and bacterial chemotaxis, Stochastic Models, Information Theory, and Lie Groups will be of interest to graduate students and researchers working in applied mathematics, the sciences, and engineering.

Structural Analysis of Complex NetworksEDITOR: MATTHIAS DEHMER, University of Coimbra, PortugalISBN-13: 978-0-8176-4788-9PAGES/ILLUS: approx. 550 p., 50 illus., HardcoverPRICE: approx. $129.00AVAILABLE (US): July 2009

This self-contained book presents theoretical results and current applications of structural network analysis to synthetic and real-world networks. The individual chapters are a careful balance of classical and novel approaches, ranging in scope from determining the structural information of networks, partitions, and distances in graphs to applying structural graph analysis to biological networks.A major goal of the book is to highlight the need for theoretical and applied results to enhance knowledge and understanding of networks, in general, and to solve challenging practical problems. Another major theme of the work is to show that very large and complex data sets—for example, in biology or chemistry—require novel approaches to take into account the size and complexity of such networks under investigation.

SELLING POINTS: Each chapter is written comprehensively, focusing not only on the presentation of a

method or an algorithm, but also providing additional background information on graph theory, computer science, machine learning, statistics, or biology

Emphasis is not only on mathematical methods; the applications presented demonstrate the potential for each method examined

Symmetry, Representations, and InvariantsAUTHORS: ROE GOODMAN, Rutgers University, New Brunswick, NJ

ISBN-13: 978-0-387-79851-6PAGES/ILLUS: XX, 716 p. 10 illus., HardcoverPRICE: $89.95AVAILABLE (US): June 2009

Symmetry is a key ingredient in many mathematical, physical, and biological theories. Using representation theory and invariant theory to analyze the symmetries that arise from group actions, and with strong emphasis on the geometry and basic theory of Lie groups and Lie algebras, Symmetry, Representations, and Invariants is a significant reworking of an earlier highly-acclaimed work by the authors. The result is a comprehensive introduction to Lie theory, representation theory, invariant theory, and algebraic groups, in a new presentation that is more accessible to students and includes a broader range of applications. The philosophy of the earlier book is retained, i.e., presenting the principal theorems of representation theory for the classical matrix groups as motivation for the general theory of reductive groups. The wealth of examples and discussion prepares the reader for the complete arguments now given in the general case.

SELLING POINTS: Applications to geometry (curvature tensors), topology (Jones polynomial via

symmetry), and combinatorics (symmetric group and Young tableaux) More than 350 exercises (most with detailed hints for solutions) further explore main

concepts

The purpose of this book is to provide the reader with a solid background and understanding of the basic results and methods in probability theory before entering into more advanced courses. The first six chapters focus on some central areas of what might be called pure probability theory: multivariate random variables, conditioning, transforms, order variables, the multivariate normal distribution, and convergence. A final chapter is devoted to the Poisson process as a means both to introduce stochastic processes and to apply many of the techniques introduced earlier in the text. The main idea is that this chapter may serve as an appetizer to the more advanced theory.

SELLING POINTS: The present second edition offers updated content, one hundred additional problems

for solution, and a new chapter that provides an outlook into further areas and topics, such as stable distributions and domains of attraction, extreme value theory and records, and martingales

Presentation is thorough and includes many examples that are discussed in detail

These congenital deformities, funnel or keel chest deformities, as well as Poland syndromes, affect a small group of patients who suffer from aesthetic rather than functional impairment. The wide variety of diagnoses and recommended therapies, mostly surgical procedures, can be very confusing for patients, their parents, physicians and surgeons. In recent years several techniques have been refined and developed to deal with these complex problems, and surgeons with different specialties have been operating on these deformities, mostly as lonely experts in their respective fields. This book should not be seen as an operation atlas but more as a compact survey of a small group of medical conditions and the need for flexible options for an individual therapeutic approach, based on the combined experience of different international specialists. Thus the book is designed for obstetricians, pediatricians, physicians and surgical specialists alike.

The Bethesda System for Reporting Thyroid CytopathologyDefinitions, Criteria and Explanatory Notes

EDITORS: SYED Z. ALI, The Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, MD, USA and EDMUND S. CIBAS, Harvard Medical School, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston, MA, USA

ISBN-13: 978-0-387-87665-8PAGES/ILLUS: approx. 250 p., 235 illus., 200 in color, SoftcoverPRICE: approx. $39.95AVAILABLE (US): September 2009

Thyroid FNA is one of the most commonly performed cytologic procedures and is the standard diagnostic method for managing the patient with a thyroid nodule. In the past, ambiguous and inconsistent diagnostic criteria and terminology have hampered sample interpretation and patient management. It is hoped that, by bringing together national and international thyroid experts from diverse disciplines, the book will achieve its goal: to provide the reader with a generously illustrated and user-friendly reference on this unified approach to thyroid diagnostic criteria and reporting. The book will succinctly summarize and illustrate the salient points in the diagnosis of the non-neoplastic and neoplastic thyroid diseases. The chapters will be set up as follows: 1. Background, 2. Criteria, 3. Explanatory Notes, and 4. Sample reports. The development of the Bethesda System for Thyroid FNA parallels the development of the Bethesda System for Reporting Cervical Cytology, which was also the result of an NCI-sponsored multidisciplinary conference. Now in its 2nd edition (Solomon and Nayar, 2004, Springer), The Bethesda System for Reporting Cervical Cytology revolutionized the reporting of Pap test results. Virtually every cytopathology laboratory in the U.S. (and a large number overseas) uses the Bethesda System for reporting Pap test results and thus owns at least one copy of the book. The new terminology has already received much attention in the planning of upcoming national and international meetings. We expect that the Bethesda System for thyroid FNA will have the same effect in transforming, unifying, and improving the reporting of thyroid FNA results as its sister publication did for Pap testing.

SELLING POINTS: The terminology framework described in this book is an important advance in the

field of cytopathology Until now, there has been no uniform system for reporting the results of thyroid fine

needle aspiration (FNA) results Serves as a reference guide not just for pathologists, but also endocrinologists,

surgeons, and radiologists

The book Entropy and Information deals with the thermodynamical concept of entropy and its relationship to information theory. It is successful in explaining the universality of the term "Entropy" not only as a physical phenomenon, but reveals its existence also in other domains. E.g., Volkenstein discusses the "meaning" of entropy in a biological context and shows how entropy is related to artistic activities. Written by the renowned Russian bio-physicist Mikhail V. Volkenstein, this book on Entropy and Information surely serves as a timely introduction to understand entropy from a thermodynamic perspective and is definitely an inspiring and thought-provoking book that should be read by every physicist, information-theorist, biologist, and even artist.

Lunar Meteoroid Impacts and How to Observe ThemAUTHOR: BRIAN CUDNIK, Houston, TX, USAISBN-13: 978-1-4419-0323-5PAGES/ILLUS: approx. 250 p., 75 illus.,

SoftcoverPRICE: approx. $34.95AVAILABLE (US): July 2009

The face of the Moon we see today has been substantially etched by the effects of meteor impacts. Craters on the Moon are the result of ancient impacts with large meteorites - or small asteroid-like bodies - which produced both primary craters (where the meteorites hit) and secondary craters (where material hurled high above the surface crashed back down). Even some of the vast lunar "seas" - actually basalt plains from ancient volcanic eruptions - may have been the result of impacts that triggered lava outflows. The era of major impacts on the Moon may have passed, but lunar meteorites may well be the cause of what are known as Lunar Transient Phonomena ("LTP" or sometimes "TLP") flashes and puffs of gas or vaporized rock or dust that are observed on the Moon's surface. This book looks at the way the Moon has been shaped by meteorites, proposes lunar meteorites as the most likely cause of most LTPs and describes in practical detail how amateur astronomers can observe impacts on the Moon, past and current.

SELLING POINTS: Describes how amateur and practical astronomers can support (and even compete

with) professional astronomers in this field Equips readers with the resources to observe "geology in the making" on a Moon

once assumed to be geologically dead Highlights the risk of asteroid impacts here on Earth, and the impact risk to

astronauts on the lunar surface

The Messier's catalog of 109 'non-stellar' objects is still used by amateur astronomers as a guide to interesting objects to view and image. In 1995 the notable English astronomer and broadcaster Sir Patrick Moore published his own catalog of a further 109 objects, to complement the Messier catalog and provide an extended list of fascinating targets for amateur astronomers. He called it the Caldwell Catalog (Sir Patrick's full name is Patrick Alfred Caldwell-Moore), the 'M' designation having already been used by Messier. Along with Messier's list and Herschel's list of mostly faint 'non-stellar' objects, the Caldwell objects are now programmed into many automated telescope controllers. This allows all of these objects to be located easily even by newcomer astronomers. The Caldwell objects are just as spectacular as the 'M' objects, especially when using the large telescopes and the sensitive CCD cameras readily available today. The Caldwell Objects and How to Observe Them comprehensively describes all of the 109 Caldwell objects, with specific advice on how to find them (if necessary with a 'Go-To' telescope), how to visually observe or image them, and how to image-process the results. There is information about the optimum astronomical equipment to use for each object and, for those who prefer to make sketches, there is advice on drawing these extended objects at the eyepiece.

SELLING POINTS: Presents an extensive selection of celestial objects to view complementing the

popular Messier objects Enables deep-sky imagers to get the most out of each Caldwell object by using the

most suitable equipment and providing imaging hints and tips The Caldwell Catalog objects are now included in all Meade Autostar controllers Provides easy-to-follow instructions on finding each object without a 'Go-To'

telescope Contains useful tips to help cope with light pollution Explains the use of many filters for imaging and visual work on the Caldwell objects
