Biometrics
• An automated method of recognizing a person based on physical or behavioral traits.
• Consist of two main classes1. Physiological- related to the
shape of the body.2. Behavioral- related to the
acutal person.
![Page 3: Biometrics](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062722/56813a55550346895da24c15/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)
Common human traits used
• Fingerprint• Speech• Face• Iris• Speech• Handwritten signature• Hand geometry
![Page 4: Biometrics](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062722/56813a55550346895da24c15/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
Functions
• Verification- a pre-stored template matched against a sample which can be stored in a card.
• Identification- uses all the templates to see which one is closest to the imputed sample.
![Page 5: Biometrics](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062722/56813a55550346895da24c15/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
Implementing Biometrics
• Possession-based- uses one specific “token” such as a security card.
• Knowledge-based- uses a code or password.
![Page 6: Biometrics](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062722/56813a55550346895da24c15/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
How a fingerprint is read
• Individual’s index finger is preceded onto scanner.
• Scanner reads unique pattern plotting distinctions.
• Points are linked forming a pattern recorded as an algorithm used for comparison.
![Page 7: Biometrics](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062722/56813a55550346895da24c15/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
Areas of study
• Biological studies- collects, analyzes, and manages data within biological communities.
• Biological sciences- researched for years and is now finally known as biological statistics.
• More recently, behavioral biometrics which has broadened its abilities to actually recognize a human’s physical and behavioral traits.
![Page 8: Biometrics](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062722/56813a55550346895da24c15/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
Examples of Biometric
• YouTube – Biometrics
• Disneyland

Parameters (1-3)
• Collectability- the ease of acquisition for measurement.
• Uniqueness- how well the biometric separates individually from another.
• Permanence- measures how well a biometric resists aging.
![Page 10: Biometrics](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062722/56813a55550346895da24c15/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
Parameters (4-5)
• Acceptability- the degree of approval in a technology.
• Performance- accuracy, and speed of the technology used.

Advancing..
• As this technology advances, more and more companies are using biometrics to secure safe and accurate identification.
• The use of biometrics can efficiently offer the protection against economic and social problems associated with identity theft.
![Page 13: Biometrics](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062722/56813a55550346895da24c15/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
Concerns..
• These concerns fall into three main categories:
1. Informational privacy
2. Physical privacy
3. Religious objections
![Page 14: Biometrics](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062722/56813a55550346895da24c15/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
Informational Privacy
• Relates to the tracking capabilities of biometrics, both public and private sectors have raised concerns on the ability to maintain owns anonymity.
• The information from tracking combined with other personal data can provide one with private information about another.
![Page 15: Biometrics](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062722/56813a55550346895da24c15/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
Physical Privacy
• Goes hand in hand with ones own hygiene.
• We can never be too certain on the cleanliness of the device, just as we can never be sure how clean a public restroom actually is
![Page 16: Biometrics](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062722/56813a55550346895da24c15/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
Religious Objections
• Christians associate the use of biometrics with the “branding” that was discussed in book of Revelation.
• They believe it goes against our freedoms as citizens in the United States.
![Page 17: Biometrics](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062722/56813a55550346895da24c15/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
Countries adapting to biometrics
• United States
• Brazil
• Germany
• Australia
• Israel
• Iraq
• Japan
![Page 18: Biometrics](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062722/56813a55550346895da24c15/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
United States
• Strong advocate of biometrics with the increase of security with the increase of security since Sept. 11th.
• In a recent speech given by President Bush in 2006 he says, “A key part of that system for verifying documents and work eligibility of aliens should be a new identification card for every legal foreign worker. The card should use biometric technology, such as digital fingerprints, to make it tamper-proof.”

Brazil
• Since the beginning of the 21st century Brazilians have a user ID card which – Fully digitized using a 2D bar code with
information which can be matched with its owner.
– The bar code includes a photo, signature, two fingerprints, and other data.

Implemented by:
• FBI
• Health Care
• Gyms
• Tanning Salons

FBI
• Uses Live Scan identification system or Cross Match System to capture and check the fingerprints and photographs of Al-Qaeda terrorists.
• The Live Scan system allows the prints to be transmitted rapidly through satellite back to home base.
![Page 22: Biometrics](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062722/56813a55550346895da24c15/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)
Health Care
• Patients are now able to place their finger on a scanner to pull up their record.
• Also used to eliminate health-insurance fraud. There is no picture on a health insurance card, so sometimes they get passed around.
![Page 23: Biometrics](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062722/56813a55550346895da24c15/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)
The future..
• Biometrics is a fascinating area of study that continues to expand and develop.
• Within the next few years we will soon be able to live in a more care-free world.
• Biometrics is the future, within a few years everything in our world will be computerized and run electronically.
