AL Dear Partner,

After the absolute high the poultry industry enjoyed in 2011 and 2012, the past year has brought the unavoidable cyclical downturn. All time high feed prices, avian flu, political turmoil and unfavourable exchange rate movements have created uncertainty and extremely tight margins for poultry producers around the globe.

At Petersime, we have decided to utilize this period of transition to further extend our offering to our customers. In this issue of our newsletter we will highlight the results of this effort.

As some of you have discovered at the IPPE Show last January, we’ve successfully launched our BioStreamer™ HDrange. A spinoff from the marketwide recognized BioStreamer™ incubator, the HD caters for 12% more eggs within the same footprint, helping you to further increase the return on your hatchery project investment.

Understanding the importance of assisting you in optimizing the performance of your hatchery, we are introducing our Hatchery Management Training module. Meanwhile, we are further investing in our international sales team by bringing on board Rafael Alonso to reinforce the Latin American sales force and by appointing Proline Group as the new Petersime distributor for Vietnam.

Our Hatchery Development Manager, Roger Banwell, shares his professional viewpoint on our Hatchery Performance Audit Service Pack.

Last but most certainly not least, we proudly highlight some new hatchery projects that have been granted to our company, namely Cobb’s GP hatchery in China, Dayntee Farms’ new project in Nigeria and van Gent’s hatchery refurbishment in the Netherlands.

Wishing you an enjoyable read!

Unique honeycomb shaped setter tray

Petersime’s High Density solution is designed around setting the eggs in a honeycomb structured setter tray rather than the traditional matrix shaped version. The structure of this honeycomb tray allows setting 12% more eggs on the same surface while keeping the airflow between the eggs optimal.

Petersime’s HD trays are compatible with today’s automation systems. This implies that more eggs will be handled at the same time, significantly reducing your throughput time.

The HD tray pockets are designed to hold the large eggs produced by mod-ern strains, while supports are provided to keep the smaller eggs in place.

Depending on the workflow of your hatchery, you can opt for a stackable version of the HD tray. These stackable trays can be transported from farm to hatchery on pallets.

Features and benefits

The benefits of this HD tray are nume-rous. As your incubators hold 12% more eggs while occupying the same footprint, you need to install fewer machines to achieve the total hatchery capacity you have in mind. As a result, your hatchery will be smaller and your land purchasing and construction costs reduced.

On top of that, thanks to the honey-comb trays, egg transportation will be more compact and thus cheaper.

The honeycomb structure of the 84 egg HD setter tray allows setting 12% more eggs in an incubator of the same footprint.>

Compatible with Embryo-Response Incubation™

The patented Embryo-Response Incubation™ sensors and algorithms are perfectly applicable on the BioStreamer™ HD setters and hatchers. Dynamic Weight Loss System™ and OvoScan™ have been reshaped to fit in the HD concept, whereas CO2NTROL™ and Synchro-Hatch™ have remained unchanged.

Increased ventilation capacityThe pulsators on the BioStreamer™ HD are equipped with five large blades, which provide the necessary air velocity between the eggs. In addition, the upgraded ventilation exhausts installed on the roof allow for extra ventilation.

Reinforced trolleys and tray turning systemsThe castors of both the HD setter trolleys and the HD hatcher trolleys are sturdier. Moreover, the hanging bars of the setter trolleys have been reinforced. Despite the extra weight, the trolleys are just as ergonomic and easy to manoeuvre.

Increased heating and cooling powerThe capacity of the heating elements has been upgraded. This guarantees a short warm-up time of all of the eggs at the beginning of the incubation cycle. The cooling coils have an in-creased diameter, resulting in a larger total cooling surface. This way, the setter can easily cope with the 12% increase in heat production.

Adaptations for higher density

For the BioStreamer™ HD to be able to cope with the increased capacity, Petersime has adapted some essential components:

These design changes guarantee the same results in terms of hatchability, chick uniformity, post-hatch performance and energy consumption per egg as those achieved with standard S-line incubators.

The HD version of the OvoScan™ sensor also scans the egg shell temperature of 4 adjacent eggs, and it uses the same algorithms as the standard version. However, its shape has been adapted to fit in the honeycomb structure of the trays.

Broederij van Gent, a Cobb PS hatchery located in Veenen-daal (the Netherlands) has recently upgraded a substan-tial part of its incubation equip ment. Hatchery mana-ger Mr Cees van Gent gives us an exclusive view inside his hatchery.

Installation of 30 Petersime BioStreamer™ setters was completed at the end of December 2013, and in January 2014, the Eagle Eye™ hatchery monitoring software was set up. Moreover, the floor has been renewed and the exis-ting HVAC control system has been replaced with Petersime controllers.

For reasons of flexibility, the incubators are a mix of 4, 8 and 12 trolley ma-chines as van Gent works with all kinds of batch sizes. Delivery, installation and commissioning were completed by Petersime and its Dutch distributor PEJA Automation within a very short time frame in order to ensure continuous operation.

Broederij van Gent is a PS breeder hatchery that works exclusively with Cobb Europe. The company has al-ready been working with Petersime equipment for 41 years. For this up-grade, owner Cees van Gent opted for high-end BioStreamer™ incubators for two reasons.

“Firstly, we wanted to optimize our hatch results, and for me Petersime’s S-line incubators are among the best in the market,” he explains. “Secondly, we want to improve bio-security even further. Hatchery hygiene is of the utmost importance for us, and Petersime incubators are especially designed to safeguard bio-security during the entire incubation process.”

Proline is a Canadian based company that supplies various product lines for pigs, poultry and feed to Southeast Asian markets. Proline and Petersime have already been working together since 2009 in the Philippines. From now on, however, the company will be distribut-ing and servicing Petersime incubators and hatchery equipment in Vietnam as well.

Vietnam: a land of opportunity

Proline has been active in Vietnam for 5 years now, and even in this relatively short time frame, the local poultry industry has drastically changed.

Mr Ho Dac Khanh, Vietnam Country Manager at Proline Group, comments: “Vietnam has a lot of potential in the field of poultry production. More and more integrators are investing in the poultry mar-ket, implementing modern technologies. Moreover, in the past few years we have seen increasing investments in the breeder and layer markets.”

Mr Khanh sees lots of opportunities in Vietnam for both Petersime and the Proline Group.

Benefits of the programme

The objective of the HPA is to ensure optimum hatchery performance, incorporating Petersime incubation equipment. All areas are assessed, from egg selection through to chick holding.

The HPA service is configured with clear objectives and procedures but has sufficient flexibility to ensure the package is available to all customers regardless of size or location. Thanks to the one-to-one element, without the presence of other companies’ repre-sentatives, the client can be complete-ly open with regard to any issues.

The successful completion of numer-ous audits throughout 2013 leads to significant gains being made by all clients.

Jason has over 24 years’ experience in the industry along with vast product specific knowledge. This combination forms a unique insight into optimal hatchery operation. He adds: “In a busy operation, critical factors can easily be overlooked and an independent overview can often be enough to make major improvements.”

In recent years, Petersime has developed a number of support packs and training sessions for both new and existing customers. The Hatchery Management Training, introduced in this newsletter, is just one example. All of these programmes ensure an efficient start-up of any new installation and help to maintain a high level of ongoing performance.

However, no two hatcheries around the world are alike. Since 2013, Petersime also actively supports hatcheries that want to optimise the performance of their specific facilities. For this purpose, the Hatchery Performance Audit (HPA) was developed, during which Petersime hatchery specialists visit hatcheries to identify key areas requiring attention. Based on this assessment, and on the client’s own request, they also provide tailored training.

Site-specific training

After completion of the audit, site-specific training as well as a final pre-sentation are provided to all interested personnel within the customer’s orga -nisation.

Frank Verschuere, Incubation Special-ist at the Hatchery Development Department, comments: “Incubation knowledge is extremely variable within the industry and a general training pack-age can often either be too intense for some or too simplistic for others. The HPA allows us to identify the specific needs of the clients and ensure they are met at the ideal level.”

Improving hatchery performance through on-site assessment, advice and trainingBy Roger Banwell, Hatchery Development Manager

Offsite training is extremely important for clients to gain a sound understanding of our methodology and general incubation and management practices, but true optimisation can only really be achie ved on an onsite basis,

says Mr Jason Cormick, Hatchery Specialist.

Getting the most out of Embryo-Response Incubation™

Although Petersime’s Embryo-Response Incubation™ technologies offer the ultimate level of real time control according to the needs of the developing embryo and hatching chick, a good appreciation of the needs of the eggs being incubated is necessary. Valuable information can be obtained by organizing detailed breakout analyses and evaluating post-hatch performance.

Continued hatchery assessment

Although the HPA is organized over a predetermined period, it is essential that the client continues to monitor and assess the hatchery’s performance in order to consistently achieve opti mal performance. We strongly encourage maintaining a good level of ongoing communication in order to ensure a high quality of remote support.

It is important to have a good data acquisition and analysis system. Only then can the optimum conditions in the incubator be identified and the EmbryoResponse Incubation™ system programmed to consistently repeat those conditions,

adds Frank Verschuere, Incubation Specialist.
