Another good speaker was Anh Do because he hilarious and very entertaining. He told stories about his childhood and his own family now. Rose 5/6N

Principals News

Thank you to the Environment Committee and the families who came and helped out with Sunday‟s working bee. The area looks so much better and it will be far easier to start setting up our bush tucker garden there now!

Daylight saving ending Remember to put your clocks back an hour when daylight saving ends in NSW at 3am Sunday 1 April.

Apps for learning Young children love smartphones. Rather than just playing Angry Birds, why not download some educational apps that are fun too? You can find them at many different sites including:

Last week the P&C Sponsorship Committee launched a brand new trade based sponsorship programme called The Local Trader for our school. All the tradespeople who are part of The Local Trader are proud sponsors of Birchgrove Public School. As part of the sponsorship programme we have set up a Facebook page for The Local Trader. Here is a link to the page: https://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Local-Trader/293043617402923 It would be appreciated if those of you who are Facebook users would "like" The Local Trader Facebook page and encourage your friends and family to do the same. If you "like" the page before 1 May 2012 you will go in the draw to win a dinner for two at The Riverview.

Codes of Conduct

All children in the music programme (along with their parents) must sign the Music Code of Conduct. Copies of this document were emailed to parents late last year. Thank you to the many students and parents who have already completed and returned it. Parent contacts will be chasing up the remaining forms over the next couple of weeks. Please speak to the parent contact for your child‟s group if you require a copy. Completed forms can be handed to the parent contact or into the school office.

Arrival of children at music classes

Please note that it is a requirement that all children who are on school grounds before 8.45 am be under the supervision of a responsible adult. This means that music students must be accompanied by an adult to their music groups/band practice. Upon arrival their name will be marked off a roll. It is important that the parent contact for the group be informed if a student will not be attending a particular lesson/class.

Care of your instruments All instruments need regular care and maintenance – talk to your tutor about how to look after your instrument. It will be easier to play and sound better

Music t-shirts

Birchgrove Music t-shirts are on sale on Thursdays at the uniform shop. Music t-shirts must be worn by all

students in the music program when performing and representing the school.

Music invoices

Music ensemble invoices for Term 1 are overdue. If you have not received an invoice please contact Nicky at [email protected] .

Dates for the Diary

☺ Next Committee meeting Tuesday 8th May at 7.00pm in the staffroom.

☺ Music Committee dinner, Wednesday, 28th March, Royal Oak Hotel, Curtis Rd, upstairs at 7pm.

☺ The school fete is on Saturday, 12 May.

From The Office

Office hours are 8.30am – 3.15pm

Please conduct any business with the

office during these hours.

Student Absence - Please contact the

school office if your child is absent for a

day. If your child is away for more than one

day an email or note sent to the class

teacher explaining the absence is required.

Permission Notes and Money should

always be returned to the class teacher.

Alternative collection arrangements –

PLEASE GIVE THE CLASS TEACHER A

NOTE with any alternative pickup

arrangements. A phone message to the

office at the last minute is not the ideal way

to convey this information as it is not

always possible for the message to be

delivered to your child/class teacher .

Unless there is an emergency it is very

disruptive for the class teacher to be

delivering playdate or reminder messages

etc throughout the day.

Italian

Years 3 and 4 have learnt how to ask what flavour someone prefers and how to request a certain flavour of ice cream in Italian. Posso avere qualche gelato al cioccolato per favour? Can I have some chocolate gelato please?

Say g’day on Neighbour Day The 10th annual Neighbour Day is being held this Sunday 25 March. The day recognises the importance of creating strong community connections and relationships. SPECIAL EDUCATION IN ETHICS Following the Dec 2010 amendment of the NSW Education Act 1990, students who don‟t attend Special Religious Education (SRE)/Scripture classes in NSW public schools now have a legal right to receive philosophical ethics classes (known as Special Education in Ethics) as an option to supervised „private study.‟ The NSW government has authorised Primary Ethics, a not-for profit organisation, to deliver these classes. The philosophical ethics classes that make up the Primary Ethics curriculum are inquiry based. Children use dialogue and discussion, learning how to think about ethical matters through the give-and-take of reasoned argument. At this stage, the curriculum is only available for Years 5&6 students in classes of 8-22 children. Those children who already opt out of SRE will have priority access to this class over others who might want to join by opting out now. Primary Ethics has appointed Justine Ellis as its volunteer Ethics Coordinator at Birchgrove Public School. We have not yet recruited our first volunteer Ethics Teacher, to be trained to teach the curriculum and deliver the program at our school. For further information about the content of the philosophical ethics curriculum or to see a short video, What Happens In Ethics Classes, please go to www.primaryethics.com.au If you are interested in having your child attend this class, please complete the form below and return to the office before April 5. If you are interested in volunteering to teach Ethics, please go to the website and fill out an application form or contact Justine Ellis: [email protected] Justine Ellis Tracy Gray SRE/Ethics Coordinator Principal ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Child‟s Name: ____________________________________ Class: ________________ Tick one box only… My child currently opts out of SRE or I would like my child to opt out of SRE* I would like my child to attend Special Education in Ethics until further notice.
