In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Genesis 1:1

[The] Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the water. Genesis 1:2

When he established the heavens, I was there; when he marked out the horizon over the face of the deep,

when he established the clouds above, when he secured the fountains of the deep,

when he gave the sea his decree that the waters should not pass over his command,

when he marked out the foundations of the earth, then I was beside him as a master craftsman,

and I was his delight day by day, rejoicing before him at all times,

rejoicing in the habitable part of his earth, and delighting in its people.

Proverbs 8:27-31

The heavens declare the glory of God; the sky displays his handiwork. Psalm 19:1

By the Lord’s decree the heavens were made; and by the breath of his mouth all the starry hosts.

The LORD God made all kinds of trees grow from the soil, every tree that was pleasing to look at and good for food. (Now the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil were in the middle of the orchard.) Genesis 2:9

Then the LORD God commanded the man, “You may freely eat fruit from every tree of the orchard, but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will surely die.” Genesis 2:16, 17

Genesis 3 The Fall

So that huge dragon – the ancient

serpent, the one called the devil and

Satan, who deceives the whole world –

was thrown down to the earth, and his

angels along with him. Revelation 12:9

When the woman saw that the tree produced fruit that was good for food, was attractive to the eye, and was desirable for making one wise, she took some of its fruit and ate it. She also gave some of it to her husband who was with her, and he ate it. Genesis 3:6

When [God] drove the man

out, he placed on the eastern

side of the orchard in Eden

angelic sentries who used the

flame of a whirling sword to

guard the way to the tree of

life. Genesis 3:24

For I delight in faithfulness,

not simply in sacrifice;

I delight in acknowledging God,

not simply in whole burnt offerings.

At Adam they broke the covenant;

Oh how they were unfaithful to me!

I am about to bring floodwaters on the earth to destroy

By faith Noah, when he was warned

about things not yet seen, with

reverent regard constructed an ark

for the deliverance of his family.

Through faith he condemned the

The Tower of Babel

The whole earth had a common language and a common vocabulary. When the people moved eastward, they found a plain in Shinar and settled there. … Then they said, “Come, let’s build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the heavens so that we may make a name for ourselves. Otherwise we will be scattered across the face of the entire earth.” But the LORD came down to see the city and the tower that the people had started building. And the LORD said, “If as one people all sharing a common language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be beyond them. Come, let’s go down and confuse their language so they won’t be able to understand each other.” … That is why its name was called Babel—because there the LORD confused the language of the entire world, and from there the LORD scattered them across the face of the entire earth. Then God blessed Noah and his sons and

said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply

and fill the earth. Every living creature of

the earth and every bird of the sky will be

terrified of you. Everything that creeps on

the ground and all the fish of the sea are

under your authority. … Look! I now

confirm my covenant with you and your

descendants after you and with every

living creature that is with you. … Never

again will all living things be wiped out by

the waters of a flood; never again will a

flood destroy the earth. … When the

rainbow is in the clouds, I will notice it

and remember the perpetual covenant

between God and all living creatures of all

kinds that are on the earth.”

Genesis 12-50 The Age of the Patriarchs

c. 2000 — 1500 BC

But as the time drew near for God to fulfill the promise he had declared to Abraham, the people increased greatly in number in Egypt, until another king who did not know about Joseph ruled over Egypt.

Acts 7:17, 18

Ishmael

By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place he would later receive as an inheritance, and he went out without understanding where he was going. Hebrews 11:8

“Your father Abraham was overjoyed to see my day, and he saw it and was glad.” John 8:56

Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go out from your country, your relatives, and your father’s household to the land that I will show you. … and all the families of the earth will bless one another by your name.” Genesis 12:1-3

The LORD took him outside and said, “Gaze into the sky and count the stars — … So will your descendants be.” Abram believed the LORD, and the LORD considered his response of faith as proof of genuine loyalty. The LORD said to him, “I am the LORD who brought you out from Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land to possess.” Genesis 15:5-7

Then God gave Abraham the covenant of circumcision, and so he became the father of Isaac and circumcised him when he was eight days old, and Isaac became the father of Jacob, and Jacob of the twelve patriarchs.

Acts 7:8

Now, do not be upset and do not be angry with yourselves because you sold me here, for God sent me ahead of you to preserve life! … So now, it is not you who sent me here, but God.

Genesis 45:5, 8 As for you, you meant to harm me, but God intended it for a good purpose, so he could preserve the lives of many people, as you can see this day.

Genesis 50:20

“Come closer to me, … I am Joseph your brother, whom you sold into Egypt.” Genesis 45:4

This means it is not the children of the flesh who are the children of God; rather, the children of promise are counted as descendants. Romans 9:8 But you, brothers and sisters, are children of the promise like Isaac. Galatians 4:28

Then the LORD said to Abram, “Know for certain that your descendants will be strangers in a foreign country. They will be enslaved and oppressed for four hundred years.” Genesis 15:13

“No longer will your name be Jacob,” the man told him, “but Israel, because you have fought with God and with men and have prevailed.” Genesis 32:28

Exodus - Joshua Redemption, Law, the Promised Land

c. 1500 – 1375 BC

Moses

Joshua

The LORD said to Moses …, “Tell the whole community of Israel … [to] take a lamb for themselves according to their families, … [and to] kill it around sundown. They will take some of the blood and put it on the two side posts and top of the doorframe of the houses where they will eat it. … You are to eat it in haste. It is the LORD’s Passover. I will pass through the land of Egypt in the same night, and I will attack all the firstborn in the land of Egypt…. I am the Lord. The blood will be a sign for you on the houses where you are, so that when I see the blood I will pass over you, and this plague will not fall on you to destroy you when I attack the land of Egypt.” Exodus 12:1-13

[As] the time drew near for God to fulfill the promise he had declared to Abraham, … Moses was born. … [When] he was about forty years old, it entered his mind to visit his fellow countrymen the Israelites. … After forty years had passed, an angel appeared to him in the desert of Mount Sinai, in the flame of a burning bush. … ‘I am the God of your forefathers, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. … I have certainly seen the suffering of my people who are in Egypt and have heard their groaning, and I have come down to rescue them. Now come, I will send you to Egypt.’ … This man [Moses] led them out, performing wonders and miraculous signs in the land of Egypt, at the Red Sea, and in the wilderness for forty years. This is the Moses who said to the Israelites, ‘God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your brothers.’ This is the man who was in the congregation in the wilderness … and he received living oracles to give to you. … Our ancestors had the tabernacle of testimony in the wilderness, just as God who spoke to Moses ordered him to make it according to the design he had seen. Our ancestors received possession of it and brought it in with Joshua when they dispossessed the nations that God drove out before our ancestors, until the time of David. Acts 7:17-45

Perez, Hezron, Ram, Admin, Amminadab, Nashon

Now the LORD was going before them by day in a pillar of cloud to lead them in the way, and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so that they could travel day or night. Exodus 13:21

[The] LORD said to Joshua son of Nun, Moses’ assistant: … “Be strong and brave! Don’t be afraid.” Joshua 1:1-9

But the Israelites walked on dry ground in the middle of the sea, the water forming a wall for them on their right and on their left. So the LORD saved Israel on that day from the power of the Egyptians, and Israel saw the Egyptians dead on the shore of the sea. Exodus 14:29, 30

Had you done that, the LORD would have established your kingdom over Israel forever! But now your kingdom will not continue! The LORD has sought out for himself a man who is loyal to him and the LORD has appointed him to be leader over his people, for you have not obeyed what the LORD commanded you.” I Samuel 13:13, 14

When the time comes for you to die, I will raise up your descendant, one of your own sons, to succeed you, and I will establish his kingdom. He will build a house for my name, and I will make his dynasty permanent. I will become his father and he will become my son.

II Samuel 7:12-14

In the four hundred and eightieth year after the Israelites left Egypt, … [Solomon] began building the LORD’s temple. “As for this temple you are building, if you follow my rules, observe my regulations, and obey all my commandments, I will fulfill through you the promise I made to your father David. The LORD says, “As surely as I am the living God, you, Jeconiah, king of Judah, son of Jehoiakim, will not be the earthly representative of

my authority. Indeed, I will take that right away from you. I will hand you over to King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon … .”

Jeremiah 22:24-26

“So I, the LORD, affirm that I will send for all the peoples of the north and my servant, King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon. I will bring them against this land and its inhabitants and all the nations that surround it. I will utterly destroy this land, its inhabitants, and all the nations that surround it and make them everlasting ruins. I will make them objects of horror and hissing scorn. … This whole area … will be subject to the king of Babylon for seventy years. But when the seventy years are over, I will punish the king of Babylon and his nation for their sins. I will make the land of Babylon an everlasting ruin. I, the LORD, affirm it!” Jeremiah 25:9-12

Zedekiah … [and all] the leaders of the priests and people became more unfaithful and committed the same horrible sins practiced by the nations. They defiled the LORD’s temple which he had consecrated in Jerusalem. The LORD … brought against them the king of the Babylonians, who … carried away to Babylon all the items in God’s temple, whether large or small, as well as what was in the treasuries of the LORD’s temple and in the treasuries of the king and his officials. They burned down the LORD’s temple and tore down the wall of Jerusalem. They burned all its fortified buildings and destroyed all its valuable items. He deported to Babylon all who escaped the sword. They served him and his sons until the Persian kingdom rose to power. This took place to fulfill the LORD’s message delivered through Jeremiah. Manasseh … rebuilt the high places that his father Hezekiah had destroyed; he set up altars for Baal and made an Asherah pole … [and] bowed down to all the stars in the sky and worshiped them. … In the two courtyards of the LORD’s temple he built altars for all the stars in the sky. He passed his son through the fire and practiced divination and omen reading. He set up a ritual pit to conjure up underworld spirits, and appointed magicians to supervise it. He did a great amount of evil in the sight of the LORD, provoking him to anger. … Furthermore Manasseh killed so many innocent people, he stained Jerusalem with their blood from end to end, in addition to encouraging Judah to sin by doing evil in the sight of the LORD. named Simeon who was righteous and devout,

looking for the restoration of Israel, and the Holy

Spirit was upon him. It had been revealed to him

by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he

had seen the Lord’s Christ.

Luke 2:25, 26

Like Simeon, and Anna (who is also mentioned in

Luke’s Gospel), there were many Jews who

eagerly waited for the promised Messiah to come,

under the oppression of successive foreign rulers.

In the first year of King Cyrus of Persia, in fulfillment of the LORD’s message spoken through Jeremiah, the LORD motivated King Cyrus of Persia to issue a proclamation throughout his kingdom and also to put it in writing. It read: “This is what King Cyrus of Persia says: ‘The LORD God of heaven has given me all the kingdoms of the earth. He has appointed me to build a temple for him in Jerusalem, which is in Judah. c. AD 30 The Last Days

The End of this World

“Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

Romans 10:13

To the same apostles also, after his suffering, he presented himself alive with many convincing proofs. He was seen by them over a forty-day period and spoke about matters concerning the kingdom of God. While he was with them, he declared, “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait there for what my Father promised, which you heard about from me. For John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now. … [You] will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the farthest parts of the earth.” After he had said this, while they were watching, he was lifted up and a cloud hid him from their sight. Acts 1:3-9 Now when the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like a violent wind blowing came from heaven and filled the entire house where they were sitting. And tongues spreading out like a fire appeared to them and came to rest on each one of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit, and they began to speak in other languages as the Spirit enabled them.

Acts 2:1-4

“Repent, and each one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is for you and your children, and for all who are far away, as many as the Lord our God will call to himself. … Save yourselves from this perverse generation!”

Acts 2:38-40

(Look ! I am coming soon, … I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end!) Blessed are those who wash their robes [in the blood of the Lamb] so they can have access to the tree of life and can enter into the city by the gates. “I, Jesus, … am the root and the descendant of David, the bright morning star!” “Come!” And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who wants it take the water of life free of charge. I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy contained in this book: If anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book. And if anyone takes away from the words of this book of prophecy, God will take away his share in the tree of life and in the holy city that are described in this book.

Revelation 22:12-19

Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and earth had ceased to exist, and the sea existed no more. … “Look! The residence of God is among human beings. He will live among them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death will not exist any more – or mourning, or crying, or pain, for the former things have ceased to exist.” The [holy] city possesses the glory of God; its brilliance is like a precious jewel, like a stone of crystal-clear jasper. … Now I saw no temple in the city, because the Lord God – the All-Powerful – and the Lamb are its temple. 23 The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, because the glory of God lights it up, and its lamp is the Lamb. 24 The nations will walk by its light and the kings of the earth will bring their grandeur into it. 25 Its gates will never be closed during the day (and there will be no night there). … Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life – water as clear as crystal – pouring out from the throne of God and of the Lamb, flowing down the middle of the city’s main street. On each side of the river is the tree of life producing twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit every month of the year. Its leaves are for the healing of the nations. And there will no longer be any curse, and the throne of God and the Lamb will be in the city. His servants will worship him, and they will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. … and they will reign forever and ever.

Revelation chapter 21 & chapter 22:1-5

“Holy Holy Holy is the Lord God, the All-Powerful, Who was and who is, and who is still to come!” “You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, since you created all things, and because of your will they existed and were created!”
