Leaders Crash in Day of Surprise sFIVE FIGHT FOR FOURTH PLACE

FIRST DEFEAT FOR AJAXBy GEORGE McTAGGART

She leading teams suffered defeat in last Saturday's round whichproduced a crop of upsets, one of the leaders, AJAX, being beaten forhe first time this season .The others to go down were North Old Boys, Caulfield Grammarians,

, ,td three Reserve teams - Hampton Rovers, Old Brighton and West6runswick .

And 14 other teams in the fours were beaten, many of them by0~,uns outside the top bracket in each case. With four rounds to be played the fight for the four is on in real

earnest, with five teams fighting for fourth place in the top grade .North Old Boys' inaccuracy in close in managed only points .

iont of goals was the prime cause Ormond didn't look like a fina ltheir three-goal defeat by Co-

,;r„ whose tactics of crowding,nd packing their backline paid%,idends .At the other end, their own for-

cards were well on the target, king 13-6 to North's 8 .18 .Old Trinity repeated their first"

    - ,) und win over De La Salle (thisme by 21 points) and drew level

h University Blues in fourthaace, but well back on percentage .The Blues failed by two goal s

;,ainst St . Bernard's, but had the, nance to win_ it in the last fewainutes, when three shots from

four prospect, when they failedbadly against bottom side, Reser-voir Old Boys .

Ormond wasted the wind advan-tage in the first quarter and al-though they put in a good thirdterm, they led by only 19 pointsat the last change, and Reservoirswamped them in the final quarterwhen they rattled on eight goalsto win by 27 points .

University Blacks scraped homeby seven points from MonashBlues, with a lucky break in thedying minutes of the game .

a game out of the four, but itwould be more correct to say thatthis win has made them a littlesafer from relegation .

Caulfield went down by fivepoints to Old Paradians, whodoubly improved their chances ofcompeting in the finals thanks toMelbourne High's 29-point winover Collegians .

High lifted their hopes of stayingin the Section a little, but theirchances of avoiding relegation arefar from bright .

Hampton Rovers pipped Fawknerby three points to knock them outof the four, and it's a toss-upwhich of these two will occupyfourth place at the end of thehome-and-home series.

Parkside beat Old NIelburnian .;by 29 points, allowing Old Haile~,-bury to move up to second.

Old Camberwell broke AJA}{,~winning run with a venget c ,beating the leaders by nine goal~,and Elsternwick's hopes fade~when they were well beatenOld Brighton .

Heatherton's defeat by NorthBrunswick allowed ANZ Bank tc;displace them from the four arcFootscray Tech's poor kicking costthem the game against BulleenUnited, who are only 2 .2% behintithem now.

    PREVIEWING TODAY'S GAMESA SECTIO N

~iy opening observation that the topsection was evening up, and that win-ners were hard to select, was about,is close as I got to an accurate pre-riletion in last week's round .

I am somewhat heartened by the fact❑ ru the erudite John Byrne could donor better .

Fresh from their spirited tussle with,t . Gernard's, which they fought outto the end, University Blues couldprove to be in the right mood to takejn De La Salle, with a place in thetcnir at stake . I'm tipping the Student s

get home in a very . close game .The big match in my book will take

place between St Bernard's and Northold Boys in what could be a grand finalpreriew . Their home ground advantage,pl ;s strong defence (doesn't a half back,Ine of Joe Donlan, Peter Racklram andi'eter Aughton sound good?) should getSt . Bernard's the points.

University Blacks and Old Trinity, bothlast round winners, will battle out a,luse one . With the relegation threat;i ili hanging over their heads, due to"oourg's accurate kicking last week,Blwcks may approach the contest withmore incentive than Trinity, and coupledwith the home ground advantage, I'mIeaning towards the Students .

Cell done Reservoir. Any team thatcan take Ormond to the cleaners likeyou did has good credentials . For thisreason I believe they will take thepoints from Monash, in a match vitalto both clubs .

Stern rivals for more than a decade,Ormond and Coburg will be at it againin a match that should be worth goinga long way to see . Which one to selectis a knotty problem but I'm going forCoburg on recent form, without muchconviction . Do the right thing for meplease Burgers, I could really use a,.~n .

SELECTIONS : University Blues, St.Bernard's, University Blacks, ReservoirOld Boys, Coburg . - ALF KEAM .

B SECTIONDisaster day last week with tipsters

making fools of ourselves but at leastwe get another chance which is morethan we can say about Collegians andSt. Kilda who both abdicated .

Some fool said Melbourne High werecertain C Graders but now Geelongand St Kilda seem to be doing every-thing to deprive them of that doubtfulhonour .

Bill Collins would surely have aphrase for Ivanhoe's run from the clouds .

The Paradians-Marcellin tussle willsurely give a clue to this year's pre-miers and whilst Paradians are doingeverything right Marcellin have a moretraditional line up - big rucks, speed ,

    THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER-JULY 31, 197 6

good forwards and are proud of No . Iposition .

Paradians will wear Marcellin downat Yarra Park but I must go for theproven class of Marcellin .

St. Kilda have blown their finalchances and a loss to Melbourne willput them in the hot seat for relegation .Likewise Melbourne have incentive . How-ever, at home, I must go back to St .Kilda's previous game against Mar-cellin to adjudge them the likely win-ner.

Old Scotch will win well againstCollegians, who are in disgrace andseem to have lost interest .

Even the inbuilt inter-school rivalrywill not arouse Collegians against theirstronger opponents who are now work-ing themselves into a better mentalsituation with Lawrence "A" at his best .

Ivanhoe will not let Queen's Parkinterrupt their strong and exciting runhome. Geelong, with a foot edging to-wards C Grade, did boast good all-round teamwork earlier but it seemsIvanhoe hold all the cards in this regardnow . Enthusiasm and good teamworkwill be Ivanhoe's winners .

Caulfield needed a loss and they gotit and it can only do them some good. They will not let Old Carey upset theirrun for the double chance .

SELECTIONS : St. Kilda CBC, OldScotch, Ivanhoe, Marcellin, CaulfieldGrammarians . - JOHN BYRNE .

C SECTIONParkside's great win over Old Mel-

burnians now establishes them as aworthy team to hold top place .

Parkside face another hard game to-day against Hampton Rovers . At homethey will be flat out to prove they area strong contender for the flag - Ithink they will win .

Kew at home to Old Melburnians willfind O.M's a bit too good.Old Haileyburnians still not at full

strength should be good enough to takethe points at Alphington .

Although both winners last week,UHSOB appear to be a bit too strongfor Power House .

Fawkner never say die and will beout to make up for their defeat lastweek . To keep their four hopes alivethey must win at Old Ivanhoe and Ipick them to do so .

SELECTIONS : Old Melbournians, Park-side, Old Haileyburians, UHSOB, Fawk-ner . - ALEX JOHNSON.

D SECTIONWith only four games remaining, D

Section finalists would seem fairly set-tled - AJAX, Old Xav's, Old Camber-well and Assumption .

But while chances are remote, thatany of these teams could miss out o n

F SECTIONP>ulleen United may have won well last

,tcek against the unpredictable Foots-cr ;ty but it will be a different story, his week when they meet the big men,it West Brunswick - say no more .

As far as I'm concerned Footscraydon't deserve my support, they alwaysundo my selections one way or the(,iher, so this week I give my nod;t, Thornbury in a close hard-foughtrame .St. Bede's will be back on the win-

ning track with a strong and morale-boosting win over hapless La TrobeHc'ds .

Beverley Hills will not have too manyproblems in disposing of UniversityIzcds and in the final game Glenroy athome should have the advantage overpu lieen-Templestowe .

    SELECTIONS : West Brunswick, Thorn-bury, St . Bede's, Beverley Hills, Glen-roy-KEITH FINDLAY.

JUNIOR SECTION 1With only four games to go, the main

games today hedge around whether Co-burg can make the finals, the relega-tion match between Power House andOld Scotch and, in my opinion, the pre-view of the fi rst semi-final betweenIvanhoe and University Blues .

UNIVERSITY BLUES had a convincing32-point win against IVANHOE in theirfirst encounter . Although the 'Hoes weresoundly beaten by, North last week, theyhave Stevenson amongst the leadinggoaikickers and should win with theirhome ground advantage .

OLD SCOTCH, who had a good winover Ormond last week, are one and ahalf games behind POWER HOUSE butahead on percentage . Gary Boyd will haveHouse "raring to go" at home and theyshould remain in this Section.

NORTH OLD BOYS visit UNIVERSITYBLACKS and on form will have aneasy win . However, they must be carefulnot to become over-confident or toocomplacent . The defeat of their seniorslast week will make them aware of thesedangers .

HAMPTON ROVERS have had a poorseason and will be no match forMONASH UNIVERSITY.

The game at De Chene Reserve betweenCOBURG and ORMOND should be agreat exhibition of strong, hard football .While Ormond have dropped in formover the last three weeks, Coburg stillhave a rough chance of making the fourand should win .

JUNIOR SECTION 2With four rounds to go the top four

is wide open . Only Thomastown can becertain of a final's appearance .

The race for the four appears to benow between five teams . West Bruns-wick would now need a dream run tobe drawn to play on August 28.Thomastown should record another

victory over Alphington today . Alphing-ton do not appear to have the strengthto defeat the leaders whose players willbe seeking to restore mobility into theirgame following their lapse of late .

The match of the day will be at StBernard's when Reservoir Old Boys arethe visitors . When the teams met onMay 29 St Bernard's recorded a narrowvictory. The spur of second place andwith it the double chance, plus homeground advantage will enable St, Ber-nard's to win .

Geelong fresh from last week's vl,tory, play West Brunswick at Queen-

Park . West are now depleted by injurand appear to have missed a finapsberth . However, they will keep theirhopes alive with a win today.

Old Paradians really let themselvesdown badly last week and they will hekeen to return to the winning list OcerKew who visit Yarra Park today . PeterPeyton will be encouraging his side tobuild percentage . However Kew will ~ ',,,trying hard to make their opponentsearn each kick .

On form one should select De LaSalle to defeat Caulfield GrammariansHowever, the Albert Park advantage isneutralized as both sides are playingon a familiar surface . Should Caulfieldhave any final aspirations they mustensure victory today . This fact aloneprompts me to tip them .

    SELECTIONS : Thomastown, Old Para-dians, St. Bernard's, Caulfield Grammar-ians, West Brunswick, . - NOR)tNUGENT.

BOB SINCLAIR - A VETERAN OF THE EXECUTIV EBob Sinclair joined Coburg when the club entered the V .A .F.A . In 1935 .Although he played, he was not a regular member of the team, and it has been

on the administrative side of amateur football that he has made his biggestcontribution .

Bob was first elected to the CoburgCommittee in 1942 and became ClubDelegate in 1948 . He was elected tothe Permit Committee in 1956 and be-came a member of the Executive Com-mittee in 1959, a position he has heldever since .

He was Secretary of Coburg for over20 years and has also held the positionof President and Chairman .

Bob has been associated with manyVictorian teams in an official capacity .

He was Manager of the team whic hplayed South Australia at Melbournein 1965, Manager of the team whichplayed at Hobart in 1969 and of theteam which played in the same cityin 1974.

He was Assistant Manager at Devon-port in 1962, Launceston in 1963, Ade-laide in 1966 and Launceston again in1972 .

He was also Assistant Manager ofthe Victorian party at the Perth Car-nival in 1970, and a member of theOfficial Party of the Australian Amateursvisit to Brisbane in 1971 .

Bob continues his story in his ownwords - "As I am retiring this year,I may not be standing for any officialposition within the V .A .F.A. next year, and I would like, with the consent ofthe Editor, to thank my club for elect-ing me Club Delegate, making it pos-sible for me to become a member ofthe V .A.F.A . and the opportunity of be-coming an official of the Association-which has enabled me to meet somany friends within the Association andalso players and friends from Inter-state .

    Page 8

"After 40 years of association with theV.A .F .A., may I voice a PERSONALopinion that I feel concerned about thefuture, with the decline in club adminis-tration (including my own club), and theunsporting attitude of many players andsupporters over the past few years, thatI urge all clubs not to let the standardsof the V .A .F.A. be lowered, but tostrive to uphold the standard that weare all proud of, which has made theV.A.F.A. so well respected for so man%years . "

Bob says that he has little footballprowess to boast about, but he cancertainly be proud of his efforts "otfthe field" and "behind the scenes" .

We wish Bob all the very best in hisretirement and hope that he will con-tinue to enjoy, and take some part in,amateur football for many years tocome.

BRUNSWICK SAY FAREWELL TO LIFE MEMBE RAfter 38 years with the club and

;uuateur football, Brunswick are losingone of their old officials in Charliepundon. At various times during hisyears of service to the club he hasheld the positions of President, Treas-uror and Finance Officer and was oneof t few responsible for Brunswick

icing one of the best clubrooms in the;,ntatenrs .

During his years with the club he sawprenih C), 1won 970 by Brunswick in 1932(8), 1 955 ( (E), 1974 (D) and thenumber of hours he worked for thechib was enormous . He will be sadlymissed around the clubrooms, so all

    CHARLIE DUNDON

Brunswick amateurs and supporters wishCharlie and his wife happy retirementat Rosebud .

(Charlie's thoughts on an AmateurFootballer are shown here - Ed .)

What is an amateur footballer? He is a person who plays the sport ,

for the sport alone, and no financialgain. In the history of this club, wehave had players who made seniorleague lists and then decided to stickto the amateur association, why? There are other players who have been

in the senior side of this club formany, many years, why?

Because they have some affiliation withthis club, which they cherish.Over the last two years we have

lost a lot of committee men and es-pecially players . There is nothing tohold them to this club, as they dotheir jobs for the love of the sport .

It is hoped throughout this year thatold and new members will realize thegreat advantage of being associated witha traditional establishment, such asBrunswick Amateur Football Club . It ismore a personal thing that you can beproud of, at the end of a successfulyear.

I could rave on about the great moraladvantages for oneself and society, butI won't, all I'll say is that in this dayand age, being an amateur footballeror a member of a truly amateur club issomething better than the averagenrixed up organisation - CHARLESDUNDON .

A "KING-SIZE" BURGER IS ALAN HANDLE YA real giant of Amateur football ranks in Alan Handley, who joined Coburg

three years ago .He is 6161-11 tall and weighs 17-1, and although 31 years old, he is still in the

champion class .Alan previously played 140 games in water-skiing and basketball - what anhis eight years with Fawkner Y .C .W. asset his height must be in the latter

dub - now Fawkner Amateur Football sport?Club - and was Vice-Captain there in

against South Australia at Adelaide and

South Australia in Melbourne last year .

1971 .t-ie won his club Best and Fairest

    award in 1968, but collected three Bestand Fairests in the Y.C .W . competition- its 1966, 1968 and 1969, and was in,he State Y .C .W. team on three oc-casions .

Alan has also represented Victoria in!nterstate Amateur Football, playing

Tasmania at Hobart in 1974, and against

Naturally he plays in the ruck, andrests in the forward pocket, where he isdangerous around the goals .

Alan's efforts are not confined to play-ing either - he is a member of theCommittee at Coburg, after serving Fawk-ner as Secretary for four years .Alan's other sporting interests include

REPLY TO B SECTION COACHIf a player kicks the ball and is

Inaccuracy in front ofgoal cost him his place early in theseason. This was followed by a boutof illness and it was only after persistentand dedicated training that he was ableto win back his half-forward flank po-sition in the reserves . On -last week'sform he would seem to be back tostay. Well done "Harry" .

MILESTONE TO OLD TRINITY PLAYEROld Trinity congratulates a youthfu l

Dick Dart on achieving a club first inplaying his 200th game against Uni Bluesrecently . Since joining the club in 1965,Dick has been a stalwart, and has quitean impressive record with the club . In-cluded in the 200 games are 11 Finalsappearances, with 3 Grand Finals (70,71, 74), and in 1967 he won the club'sBest and Fairest. In his earlier days,Dick played in the centre, but with thepassage of years he has become notedfor his strong play on the backline, withlong clearing runs as a springboard forattack. He has had a relatively injury-free career, however, (a record thatmany footballers would be glad to emu-late) and it is hoped that those legswhich have carried him so well can lastmany more seasons yet . A player ofDick's experience is an asset to anyclub, and this year he has lent his sup-port to the Reserves team, where it ishoped that some of his football "know-how" will rub off on the younger players .

Three Ivanhoe players celebrate their50th game with the club today againstGeelong. They are Phil Adley, RayBuckley and Barry Long . Phil has beenwith Ivanhoe for 3 years and has provedan asset with his pace and ability tokick a long way. "Buckles" has pro-gressed steadily from the Juniors andshows plenty of determination when thegoing gets tough . Barry has shown un-canny ability in plucking the ball off apack to take some great marks andyet he seems to make it look so easy .This trio of youth and experience augerswell for the future at Ivanhoe and I'msure we as a club are looking forward tomany more fine games from these play-ers .
