The Pro Life Campaign isa non-denominational lobbygroup, drawing its supportfrom a wide cross-sectionof lrish society.

The Campaign promotespro-life education anddefends human life at allstages from conceptionto natural death.

It also campaigns forresources to supportand assist pregnant womenand those in need ofhealing after abortion.

Suley [eveals overwhelmingsupport for pro-life positionThe latest research on life issues shows a substantial majority of the publicfavouring protection of human life at its earliest stages of development.

The Pro Life Campaign recently commissioned Millward Brown Lansdowneto carry out the research on a quota controlled sample of 950 people aged1 8+.

Q1 reads as follows:"Are you in favour of, or opposed to, constitutional protection for theunborn that prohibits abortion but allows the continuation of the existingpractice of intervention to save a mother's life in accordance with lrishmedical ethics?"

The finding shows that 7oo/o support constitutional protection for theunborn, 13% oppose it and 167o don't know or have no opinion.

What distinguishes this result from polls showing support for abortion isthe distinction it makes between necessary medical interventions inpregnancy and induced abortion, where the life of the baby is directlytargeted. This is a critical ethical distinction which abortion advocatesconstantly seek to blur.

Q2 reads:"Currently experimentation involving the destruction of human embryosdoes not take place in lreland. Do you think the Ddil should enshrine theprotection of the human embryo in law or not?"

The finding shows that 58% supports D6il legislation to protect thehuman embryo, 13% oppose it and 29% don't know or have no opinion.

Both findings are reassuring as they point to overwhelming support for thepro-life position at a time when legislation is pending that could permit thedeliberate destruction of human embryos and as calls for abortionlegislation grow louder.

Noah and the flood!Professor Robert George of PrincetonUniversity and Professor William Hurlbutof Stanford University in the US were inDub l in recent ly meet ing po l i t i c ians ,academics and pro-life supporters, discussing the case for ethical stem cellresearch that does not involve thedestruction of human embryos.Professors George and Hurlbut servedunt i l 2009 as members of the USPresident's Council on Bioethics.

Benton Markham who was trapped in a flooded hospital in New Orleans during HurricaneKatrina. When rescuers entered the hospital, Noah was an embryo trozen along with 1,400others, in one of the canisters of liquid nitrogen. He was brought by boat from New Orleans andsubsequently implanted in his mother's womb. Born on January 16th 2007, his parents calledhim Noah after that other flood survivor!

Professor George concluded:In later years, if Noah were to look back to that troubled time in New Orleans and ask himselfwhether he was rescued that day, whether it was his life that was saved, there is only one answerhe could reasonably give: "Of course!"

Philip Nitschke's Greepy GareerPro-euthanasia campaigner, Dr Philip Nitschke was in Dublin recently to run a workshop onassisted suicide. Roughly 20 people attended his talk.

He first came to public attention in Australia when in 1995 a law was enacted in Australia'sNorthern Territory allowing assisted suicide, partly as a result of Nitschke's campaigning for it.The Federal Parliament overturned this law in March 1997 by a knife-edge vote in the Senate, with 38 against assisted suicide being legalised and 33 for. In the brief period the law was inforce, however, Nitschke helped four people to kill themselves.

Nitschke's subsequent career makes for creepy reading. Before his promised return trip tolreland, possibly later this year, it is important for pro-life people to take a closer look at theeuthanasia debate and the arguments against it.

Abortion is part of the history ofracial oppressionThe Endangered Species Project is a bold new multi-media campaign in the US State of Georgiato raise public awareness about how groups like Planned Parenthood dispropottionately targetAfrican American communit ies when locating their abort ion cl inics. The new project involves highprofi le media events, pol i t ical lobbying and advert ising - including a str iking bi l lboard campaignthroughout the State. The project is a collaborative effoft between the Radiance Foundation, aneducational group that uses the media to i l luminate the intr insic value of each person, andGeorgia s Operation Outrage.

It is mainly the brainchild of Radiance Foundation Director Ryan Bomberger, himself born as aresult of rape. He hopes the project will makefellow African Americans much more consciousof the fact that the abortion industry specificallytargets them.

The init iat ive is causing quite a st ir in the US andputting abortion advocacy groups like PlannedParenthood on the defensive. lt's about time too!

lrcland should learn frcm Galifornia'sexperience of funding embryo nesearchThere are three bi l l ion reasons not to al low the Supreme Court rul ing in R v. R to be used as acover to legalise research here involving human embryo destruction.

ln 2OO4, Californian taxpayers agreed to fund embryo stem cell research to the tune of $3 bitlionin the hope of f inding cures for chronic diseases. But since then, not a single breakthrough hastaken place.

Now the Los Angeles-based lnvestor's Busrness Daily reports that the California Institute forRegenerative Medicine set up to administer the $3b has started diverting the funds earmarkedfor embryo research into the ethically non-controversial adult stem cell research.

In the wake of the Supreme Court rul ing in lreland str ipping Constitut ional protection from humanembryos in vitro, the latest developments from California take on a significant added meaning.

With her experience in other ministr ies, Minister Harney is in a posit ion to appreciate theeconomic as well as the medical knock-on effects of making lreland an international centre ofexcellence for the ethicallv non-controversial adult stem cell research.

Forced killing of baby girls in GhinaThe Economisf recently ran a cover story on the situation in China where women are routinely forced to aboft theirbaby girls or else have them killed at bifih. The mass targeting of girls has left a systemic gender imbalance in thepopulation with more unmarried young men in China than the entire population of young men in America.

The Economrsf article, in the March issue, under the single-word banner headline, Gendercide, states "the

cumulative consequence of such individual actions is catastrophic" and amounts to"carnage."

The lethal cultural bias against girls is concentrated primarily in China but also incountries like India, Taiwan and Singapore.

In addition to the human rights violation involved in killing any child, born or unborn, the specific targeting of babies based on gender is obscene.

Shamefully, but not surprisingly, radical feminist groups turn a blind eye to thiswidespread gender based human rights abuse. Were they to concede that the livesof some unborn children should be protected it would completely undermine theirrigid dogma that unborn children have no rights whatsoever.
